Aloha nō. My name is Maile (Kekuku) Ferro and there is a portion of this that shows my dad John Kekuku and Na Keonimana. My dad passed in 1985 and this is amazing. It made me cry!!!
Great to see this, what a celebration. The American flag is probably a reference to Dr Ben Finney - a Californian researcher who conceived Hokule'a, he was one of 3 men who oversaw the project. She's pretty multi national, albeit around the Pacific!
Is that the Hokule’a band playing in Tahiti? Sure looks and sounds like Roland Cazimero! I don’t think they recorded that song on the CD though I’d that is them.
Very proud to be of polynesian and marshallese decent! And, yes... Why the heck are they flying the american flag? this is solely an islander voyaging thing, right??? auwe!
It left from Hawaii, went to Tahiti and then returned to Hawaii (which is why the American flag.) But that's just my understanding.... it's not entirely clear from this video. According to the news reporter who starts talking around two thirds in, this is a polynesian voyage, and there is a song playing talking about Tahiti.
