What magical times were they, when minstrels & their tales in songs held us silent & spellbound, weaving awakened dreams, only taking our revered silence with them, when the last note hurried it away. How sad these times, when hardly a soul listens intently captured by the magic of song, voice & verse, but instead in loud voice, cacophony of disregard, ignores the labour, then erupts into drunken cheers for who knows what. That which they never heard in ignorance. Then, lament the artist in their passing, often penniless & pained in loneliness.
A few years ago I went to a dear friends cremation. As we walked into the servide Fotheringay was playing. I was stunned. In all the years I knew him I did not know he was a Fairport Fan. I tjin eastern rain played as we went out.
The Fotheringhay 😢castle mound is still here in Northamptonshire not far from where I live. I love to climb it and look out over the view she had of the River Nene. I hear this beautiful song in my mind as I stand looking over the valley. The original authenticated prison door is propped against a wall in Elton Hall..so atmospheric, so sad. Richard 3rd was born in the same castle.
422 years to the day since the execution. I'm listening to this over and over. Sandy was only 21 and RT only 19 when this was recorded. Two phenomenal talents.
I think of all of Sandy's beautiful songs, this is my absolute favorite. Like a haunted passageway coming directly from the 16th century. My God, Sandy was amazing.
Whilst Sandy Denny wrote the song and sang the vocals, we should not forget that this version was performed by Fairport Convention. They lend such a beautiful and subtle background to the lyrics. A stellar performance by all.
I bought the album 'What we did on our holidays' about 40 years ago from a second hand shop and this track has never been bettered. I like present music, Rui Da Silva 'Touch Me' being one of my favourites, but this track is magic. Enjoy !
Haunting melody and dual acoustic guitar parts, plus great bass lines, and of course the voice of the one and only Sandy Denny. What else can we ask for?!!
the guitar is amazing! it flows so effortlessly. i saw that someone said it was "spellbinding" and i have to agree. the backing vocals are haunting. there is something magical about this song.
Prodigious and powerful song, performed by prodigious and poweful Sandy, probably as Queen Mary was. Emotions cross the ages... We really have invented noting in the human soul.
Lovely video and song. Well done. There is very little left of Fotheringay Castle. The site was destroyed circa 1627 Elizabeth was not as fond of the axe as her father but she found it simply too dangerous to leave Mary alive. .
Chepstow castle. I once visited there with someone I learned lately passed away and who I had not spoken with for a while. The song, if mournful, seems nice melodically, and perhaps fitting with how I think about them. Perhaps, too, a quality to the song about how one is experiencing time, or has, or shall do so? So much of time yet a moment.
Lovely presentation --- so glad to find some Fairport-related stuff out here; I'd rather thought that Fotheringay (the group) might be too obscure even for The YouChoob *chuckle!*. FC and related groups are such a cult-like area of musical knowledge that you pretty-much have to "know somebody who is into them" to be introduced, which I did, at one time.
Thanks for bringing it all together. Before that, Fotheringay was just a incredibly good song, one of my all time favorite songs. But I never made the link with Mary, Queen of Scots and Fotheringay Castle.Your interpretation really adds something to the song, and that's an accomplishment! Greetings from Belgium.
@ozruby thanks for the info on this track! i'm just starting to familiarize myself with the incredible folk scene of England in the sixties and seventies. its a shame that music didn't find its way to this side of the pond. bert jansch is also incredible. it also seems that it was a pretty tight nit group as well (all of the folk artists and musicians in 60's & 70's England).
thanks for this. Im really keen to find some footage of the group Trees who were performing around 1969/70 and have attained a cult status. I saw them a few times and would recommend them to people.
Sandy Denny WROTE this song, played acoustic guitar on it, and sang it. She also wrote and did the same for "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" So I'm trying to figure out whether Gaga, Beyonce or Taylor Swift have anything on her. No offense, but the answer is: Sandy Denny is a greater treasure than all three of them COMBINED.
mithras ~ you're a god ! Totally beautiful song ( obviously ) , but, also loved the photos, THANX for posting. 'Spect you know that Mithras was also "immaculately conceived " and then the Christians plagiarised the idea ! Pip Pip
Mary, Queen of Scots, who had spent much of her 18 years of imprisonment at Sheffield Castle and Sheffield Manor, spent her final days at Fotheringhay, where she was tried and convicted of treason. Mary was only given the verdict the day before her execution, and spent her final night praying in the castle's small chapel. She was beheaded on a scaffold in the castle's great hall on 8 February 1587
Queen Mary was not guilty of treason it is ridiculous for two reasons 1 as Queen of a foreign country she was not an English subject therfore could not commit treason 2 Queen Mary was tbe rightful land legitimate Queen of England not Elizabeth tudor whi was illegitimate and tbe base born daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. The trial of an annoited Queen was illegal as was tge murder and yet Queen Mary was given an honourable lavish state funeral paid fir by rhe very stafe who murdered her and Elizabeth Tudor was personslly represented by her friend the Countess of Bedford. That says it all.
I just had three of Sandy's songs play in a row:
She moves through the fair
Crazy man Michael
and this one. It doesn't get much better!

1970's were magical times never to repeat , i am lucky to have lived through them .
Magnifique du haut de mes 76 ans..je n'en reviens toujours pas.
So English So gentle So beautifully sung So Sandy,❤ it

I sit up there too, watching the Red Kites circle and imagining the history. It’s a special place.

The peerless sandy , nobody comes close, ❤
Beyond beautiful! Sandy Denny's most stunning rendition of this song.
Exquisite! Thank you for sharing.

Both Sandy and Richard Thompson play the intricate guitars on this Fairport Convention song, written by Sandy of course.
Prodigious and powerful song, performed by prodigious and poweful Sandy, probably as Queen Mary was. Emotions cross the ages... We really have invented noting in the human soul.
I always loved the medieval music of this song.
I remember when this was the only copy of Fotheringay on here. Time just slips away.
Lovely video and song.
Well done.

One of the best songs ever

Emotion has the greatest and longest memory....Fleeting mortality within durable stone.
I meant to write 'forgive'. Then I watched the video again. Great piece of work and, at last, I've found the lyrics!
beautiful video. thanks for giving this song a new audience.
I have the original on rather corrupt vinyl. Smashing song and I forfive the stunning representation of Chepstow! Thank you.
This song and video are great. Thanks for psting it.
Pure beauty and perfection
Superb, thanks.
I could listen to this song all day as I could with Genesis Hall.
THE best song of all times...
Sempre emozionante sentire la voce di Sandy Denny

Great video to such a nice song, thank you.

Not just England but the whole of the UK and Ireland!
thanks for this. Im really keen to find some footage of the group Trees who were performing around 1969/70 and have attained a cult status. I saw them a few times and would recommend them to people.
what a voice.

Mary was a sacrifice
Brilliant - thanks!

Sandy's song for sure but it is Richard Thompson and Sandy who played the bewitching guitars on this. Two sublime talents.
thank you for this; just lovely.
wordofgord
Sandy is sublime
You did. And it is great! Thanks dullsvillain.
@nezichov perfect statement
@serengiv Thompson was excellent, this was at another level.
English Folk. This is unequalled, so is she.
Trees are brilliant but I've not found anything about them on you tube.
Why she had to leave us. Why ?
no prob dutchmen, I'm dutch to
can you play it on your guitar?
