  • A visit with Turner Prize 2013 nominee Laure Prouvost in her London studio to discuss her unique approach to filmmaking.
'I think misunderstanding makes you use your imagination more' says Laure Prouvost.
Prouvost's unique approach to filmmaking, often situated within atmospheric installations, employs strong story telling, quick cuts, montage and deliberate misuse of language to create surprising and unpredictable work.
She says 'The viewer decides what they want to believe, what they want to see, what they want to get. The viewer is boss.'

French artist Laure Prouvost created this installation. It was on show at the Tate in 2013. I loved it and went back to see it many times. It’s called “Wantee” which derives from “Do you want tea?”, a question Laure, apparently, was always hearing the English asking. It’s all a complete fantasy, but I love fantasies. It’s funny how people of a certain cynical mindset immediately dismiss it as “dribble”, “drivel”, and “rubbish” (those are 3 of the 5 comments posted below the film on UA-cam). Yet paradoxically, when people strike this attitude (as Melvin Bragg does on astrology, for example) it convinces me more than ever that I am on the right track in life. The loud trendy music in this "Tateshot" has been added by Tate people and it is intensely irritating, I must admit. It wasn't in the original installation.

Women Contemporary Artists are usually synonymous with "state sponsored." The major factors should be Talent and Merit. Instead you encounter this kind of drivel that would make a First Year Art Student blush. Diversity for diversity's sake is not a good idea.
