I'm an older guy..60yrs..and recently decided to make the switch from controller. I didn't want to worry about spending more money upgrading, so went straight to direct drive. I put together a Trak Racer TR80 rig, Fanatec DD Pro base (8Nm), Clubsport Formula V2.5 wheel, Clubsport V3 inverted pedals, and I added the CS shifter SQ V 1.5 (for more realism when driving cars without flappy paddles). Oh..and I been running the PS VR2 since it came out, and now with the wheel and pedals the immersion is beyond incredible!
I did a lot of practicing in the game before getting brave enough to go back online racing, and I've got a good ways to go, but I have been quicker in the rig now, and don't think I would enjoy the controller anymore.
Also if you haven't tried VR yet, I can't recommend it highly enough!..cockpit view doesn't remotely compare, and you get realism back, compared to hood, roof, or chase cam, without giving up FOV. I couldn't race on a monitor screen anymore!
    Thanks for the great content!

When I got my first wheel, it was a Logitech Wingman Pro with no FFB. I was utter shit with it at the start. Over time I got better. Then I upgraded to the G29 with FFB and that took a whole other time to get used to. I'm by far faster on a wheel than a controller. I will say the DualSense Edge is pretty awesome with GT7 though. The haptics are the best you could hope for in a controller. Eventually I'll upgrade to a direct drive and load cell pedals. But for now, my G29 is amazing. Awesome video mate. I completely agree with your opinions on assists. I use TC1 on most cars but nothing else, no brake markers, apex, counter-steer, etc. I used to have the apex markers on but learned to go with out. The immersion is worth it for me. Have you had the opportunity to try the game in VR? Having the hud off in VR is a whole new level of difficulty haha.

It's still close for me, I'm slightly quicker on some circuits with the controller but the enjoyment is far more with the wheel. I reckon Wind would be up for the Mum's lasagne challenge 😅

It depends on your skill, which for me I’m faster on controller because I started wheel a month or so ago

I found a thrustmaster t300 with a playseat for $275 used and it is wonderful. Yes it's belt driven but it feels so much better than a gear drive. If you're looking for an entry level wheel the t300 is great and a good way to get your feet wet. Brake pedal sucks but you can do a load cell upgrade. My pace isn't much different between the controller and wheel but it's much more enjoyable to feel the immersion

I may not feel the car but I can tell the car on controller way it behaves when I get tight it wouldn’t turn or snaps loose make harder to drive.

Wheel is better but hassle and maintenance but controller no feed back but easy to replace

Don't mind me I'm just spam watching trying to get my confidence up to race right now. I'm on controller and typically struggle with everything but my one fear with using steering wheel kinda worries me cause I'm partially disabled I can't actually walk. I want to race on steering wheel cause I feel like I'll be more consistent.

Using a wheel helps with consistency.. its all about getting comfortable with it. I have lack of feeling in my feet so most of my braking is muscle memory, keep at it. You've got this 🙏

@@NotThatQuick well if I can throw my 2009 Chevy Cobalt into a corner without feeling sc a red then I'm pretty sure I can handle racing on a steering wheel my problem is I have a heavy foot.
