    We finns are absolutely proud of our knives. We have had this knife culture here since ancient times, even before these modern countries ever existed. It is something that's in our blood, and is a passion for us. In lapland rural areas you can find bars full of people with knives hanging from their belts, and have nothing to worry about. It is just simply part of the culture, and is not considered only a weapon. It means so much more to us as well.

  • @Shannis75
    @Shannis75 Рік тому +17

    Wow! They gave you a puukko! :o
    It's really hard to explain what being gifted one means to a non-Finn, but being gifted a puukko is a sign of deep respect, friendship and (platonic) love. You don't just give them to someone willy-nilly, they'll earn the puukko by constantly being a decent human being, a good person, and by being a valuable member of the team/tribe/community.
    And you should definitely use it. A puukko is a gift that is meant to be used. Never using it would be disrespectful towards the puukko and towards to the person who gave it to you.
    Also, I'm not at all surprised at all that they gave you a puukko, since you're definitely a person who is worthy of being gifted a puukko, I was simply surprised that they gave you one SO SOON! Usually it takes YEARS, and being gifted one usually commemorates a special occasion.
    OTOH, you visiting Varusteleka WAS a special occasion, so maybe it was not that surprising, after all... :D

    You are totally right. Finnish puukko is a fine general purpose blade. I've told it takes 10 years of practice to make a real proper puukko. The hardest part would be tempering the product correctly. Though also fit for combat, it's indeed a finest-and-a-half blade to carve wood to clean fishes and other practical things as cutting kindling off a log and such. look at the angle of the cutting edge. It's much better for practical cutting than many wide angled military knives are.

    I'm fairly certain that the FDF is not supplied by Varusteleka in any significant way if at all. Varusteleka and the FDF may buy from the same manufacturers but the FDF is big enough to deal directly with the manufacturers instead of a retailer like Varusteleka. I'm sure that many people serving in the FDF and reservists do shop in Varusteleka but not the FDF itself.
    If there are Varusteleka products that look like FDF gear does not mean that for example the FDF m05 is a Varusteleka product. The m05 was designed by the FDF probably in collaboration with their suppliers. The FDF protected the m05 design quite aggressively and retailers were not allowed to sell it. In 2016 the FDF decided to let the retailers do their thing. Varusteleka collaborates with most likely the same FDF suppliers to create their own product. Apparently there are minor differences between the FDF m05 and the Varusteleka version but the two are close enough that the FDF allows the use of Varusteleka version in its reservist activities etc.

    • @Jaggaraz218
      @Jaggaraz218 Рік тому +2

      The FDF did not really decide to let retailers use the mo5 pattern, it's just that the second 5 year period of trademark protection of patterns ran out and renewing it would cost money and effort.

And everything from rescue to police stuff you were totally into.
    So welcome brother to the brotherhood of few foreign men. We may seem introverted but once you spend time and really talk with us, you get friend for life.

    I would have sacrificed the total of 6 h train ride to be there but I was hiking in Lapland. But seems you already had your hands full with fans.

    Bought their brand name Terävä jäger puukko 110 (Which I think you also got) and Skrama bush knife (if you can call 24cm (9.5 inch) blade as a knife) :), both are brilliant, sharp products.

    I know there are some co-op trainings on regular basis with the US armed forces in Finland. I wonder if you could get a ride on one of those excersises with the US Army? That would be cool 😎

    Are you still in Finland? I think you would love a couple spots in Hämeenlinna (50min train from helsinki). There's a tank museum that's really awesome and an old prison made into a museum.

    I don't want to undermine anything of your production but those "b rolls" you seem to take almost "just for content" are very interesting. Maybe it's because I'm a Finn but it's interesting because that shows your perspective. I'd imagine more of your followers would be interested to see your perspective of the nations as well, at least I would be interested if you visited another nation. All that aside, good content and happy to see you enjoy Finland.
    Btw. that Mario music during the workout made it seem more efficient 👍
