Note on fathomless plunge (the 14th level feature). If combat is going badly, this is an emergency bail for the full party that can’t be counterspelled, and uses a resource you’re unlikely to spend outside of emergencies. @@warlockghovat5745 It would. That being said, it’s not that big of a drawback. There’s no hard rule on what constitutes a body of water, which leaves a little too much to GM discretion for my liking, but I do want to emphasize that they have Create Water on their spell list, so have the option to prepare safe spots. In most settings, being within a mile of a body of water is typically reasonable, there’s some definite problems with Dark Sun and Spelljammer though.

@@stephenburley4581 While I think that making a pond with create water is unrealistic (it would take nearly 20 castings to fill a 5x5x5 cube, not counting how much would be absorbed by the ground), I don't think it's unrealistic at all to scout a mile out of your quest location to find any nearby water. If you're dealing with a location built by living creatures, the people who built it or lived there needed to get something to drink from somewhere, and it's not like they were subsisting completely on booze and water shipped in from elsewhere.

Just for the record, Sleet Storm doesn't synergize particularly well with the tentacle. You cannot create the tentacle inside Sleet Storm's area: it is heavily obscured, and the tentacle needs to appear "at a point you can see". The same goes for the Guardian Coil, you are effectively blinded inside the heavily obscured Sleet Storm, so you probably won't see the creature you want to protect, unless you have blindsight.

I like playing casters but aoe stuff and careful placement to not screw allies over is tricky for me

    • @marianpetera8436

@@snazzyfeathers Sleet Storm suffers from similar problems as Darkness (in that it can screw your own allies just as well as enemies). Martial characters may be bit better off, since blindsight is available from a fighting style, but Devil's Sight is useless against it. Also, Sleet Storm has a whopping 40 ft radius, vs. Darkness's 15 ft, so you have to be even more careful about its positioning... and you definitely don't want to get caught inside it, or you will be rolling concentration against your own DC, and you cannot benefit from War Caster, because the check doesn't come from taking damage :)

I think you missed the biggest strengths of Fathomless Plunge, as I do think it's actually a great feature to have in your back pocket, even if you might only use it once per campaign.
Fathomless Plunge is a "nope out of danger" button like Word of Recall. One action to instantly escape combat unless the enemy has a way to track you and the means to chase. Unlike word of recall, though, Fathomless Plunge has 0 opportunity cost. If you can use Fathomless Plunge there is no reason NOT to, the only thing it costs is it's own uses, allowing your clerics and wizards to save their level 6-7 spell slots to do even more useful things.
That being said, it only works within 1 mile of a pond you've seen, which can be a very strong restriction unless you're traveling in a particularly wet area... but again, it costs you nothing!

    • @aegisScale
      @aegisScale Рік тому +3

Even with the one mile restriction, a creative party at the 14th level can (with enough time of course) make themselves an escape pool within one mile of a villain's lair or someplace where they know (through logic or magic since you have Divination at this level too) that a big battle will take place.

There is a potential positive synergy with the Tentacle of the Deep's slow effect and the Guardian Coil. If you have a party member who is a melee character with limited mobility, like many Paladins, you can keep the tentacle near them to increase their tankiness against enemy attacks, while also making it harder for enemies to get out of range of their attacks.
Also, since Paladins also don't have very many bonus action or reaction options, you could theoretically do a Paladin/Fathomless Warlock multiclass and do that strategy by yourself. Is it as optimal damage-wise as Hexblade Paladin? Almost certainly not. But does it allow you to roleplay Aquaman? Absolutely.

You may think create/destroy water is useless but dont forget that your spell slots level up. So at 5th level spell slots you create/destroy 50 gallons of water. you can also destroy fog or create rain in a 55ft *radius* which is 110ft diameter. Now idk exactly what constitutes as a small pond but if your DM lets you, you can just find a hole that won't drain, then fill it with water, take a short rest and head into the dungeon and if things get dicey you can grab your friends as an *action* telport them out to the hole you filled with water. You can just find a body of water as well. Stuck in jail? Grab your friends and be at your water hole. If you were in a high survival style game in the desert this class would still be good because you can make water anyway but if you find an oasis with water you can always get back to it as long as you are within one mile. Also funny thing is if you and someone who you have no language in common with and can't communicate both get in a pool you can now speak with no issue. A pool you can create with create water. There is a lot more you can do as well. If the BBEG has a pool and you get captured and manage to escape you can just teleport back in at a later time. You just have to have seen it. Also, this may depend on your DM, but your tentacles can fly... I don't see why they couldn't carry you and you have 1 minute of 30ft fly speed. I think even the features that are situational are flexible enough that with the right creativity can be useful in any setting. Also you can use control water to flood a room and fight with advantage or just lock the door and let them drown. I imagine a pirate themed warlock that was captured by Davy Jones who is serving the great kraken god. He tries some cheeky things to get away but fails. Davy Jones is amused and offers a deal. Somone got away from him and he will set you free from the locker if you put the one that got away in your place. So he gives you powers from the kraken god and off you go to find him. Davy Jones is a pirate so he understands the need to pirate but he will show up and remind you why your not 20,000 leagues under the sea in his locker and tell you to get a move on finding the one that got away. I swear to god if that's the plot of the next pirates of the carribean movie I am going to be so mad and happy.

That can be flavored away ya know. My current warlock broke their pact with their previous patron but thanks to a few good deeds and favors owed, they're now a celestial warlock who's pretty much allowed to do whatever so long as he's not betraying his patron.

    • @sutoriimmortal2177

@@jdizzy192 Not really being flavored away though is it? Its more your DM letting you switch subclasses by undergoing a series of trials, which means you're out from under one boot and under another boot, albeit a less heavy one. Also, how is Celestial working out for you btw? I'm curious because I see a lot of praise sung about it but on paper its one of the worst subclasses the game seems to offer.

Also Heal Lock is fun, it's standard warlock with bonuses to radiant and fire, bonus action healing, temp HP for a whole party for sleeping, and a revive that blinds peeps. Literally the only negatives are the lack of spell slots which makes me want to save one for revivify but thats, again, standard warlock stuff.

My favorite combo is tentacle of the deeps + summon shadowspawn (despair form) + lance of lethargy. Not a ton of enemies have more than 40 ft. movement, but even the ones that do can really be screwed over by losing that much of it. Especially if you use repelling blast to keep them away from you and keep any damage they deal focused on your disposable summon.

Good video. I really like the idea of the Fathomless Warlock, but a lot of people don't seem to grasp that it isn't inherently predisposed to being a Blaster and snub it. Where it excels in is as a controller, in limiting enemy options and actions to make the fight easier for the party. That said, I kinda prefer the version from Unearthed Arcana, it gives you some more versatile abilities including a much better capstone power.

I thought of a use for Create and Destroy Water at later levels. By the time you get Fathomless Plunge (and depending on what your DM considers a “Pond”) you could use it to set up a checkpoint you and your party can return to if things go sour. It’s kind of expensive considering you only get 4 spell slots, but it’s one hell of an insurance.

I had an idea for a warlock who was semi-inspired by the liar's dice scene from Pirates of the Caribbean. She was drinking the night away in a tavern and met a strange sailor. She made a drunken bet on a single roll of the dice. The terms: If she won, he'd set her up for life. If she lost, she'd join his crew for a few years. Now she has to work as Davy Jones' errand runner on land until her contract is up. Thanks to this vid, I know exactly how to build her.

I played a fathomless lotusden halfling in an eberron campaign and I found it extremely good. Thunderwave is a much better aoe early on that arms of hadar or shatter due to the pushback. The tentacle is free damage and later on it comboes wonderfully with armor of agathys. Lightning bolt is also great: it's not fireball but sometimes the enemies align and you give them a shock - some DMs will even rule this to have a better effect underwater. Lastly, tentacles is excellent! It gives you a spell per day at level 10 and an awesome persistent effect for you to push your enemies into that also restrains them unlike sickening radiance. Lastly, you SHOULD bring this out in campaigns that will feature water and underwater sessions such as netherdeep or icewind dale to fully enjoy what it offers!
