    So true. As soon as you go anywhere public with a big camera setup with a cage and lens on it draws attention and even upsets people. Small camera, small problems. 🎥👀

    The Osmo Pocket, the more I view the more I love it. It has a really nice video quality, although I think it`s different than DSLR cameras but, for the price, I`d say it is worth investing as a B camera, or carrying around in your pocket.
    Great video!

    To be fair, if talking about spending money on Pocket accessories to make it moreusable and the price being the same as the M50 - You should do the same math for the M50 - it requires a stabilized like the G6, hand adapter for EF/EF/S lenses as basic requirements. The price has suddenly gone way beyond the pimped Pocket, so it is a wash. Both cameras need extras, and both eventually cost way more than the base price.

    I have been using osmo pocket for a while. It really has made my work better. Reason being , its always in my bag, i don't need to plan but just be there to create good content .There are few downsides of not being able to add external mike, and it isn't too great at night. It also heats up when using in 4k mode but using it with my phone is as good as having an external Stabiliser like needed in M50. I love the osmo pocket, even after the few defects that it comes with coz anyways you can't get the world in one gadget.

    Yes, I have a Mirrorless SLR camera (Panasonic G80 / G85) but I hardly ever get it out, as its far too cumbersome for daily outdoor use. It tends to come out only on special occasions (cruise excursions and the like). Otherwise I use myPanasonic LX15 / LX10 but its stabilisation sucks and autofocus isn’t up to much. So the DJI Osmo Pocket starts to look very attractive as an extra camera for cinematic B roll and inconspicuous photography at home and on holiday.

    You got my subscription for this one!
    I have the M50 and I purchased a gimbal for it, then returned that gimbal and purchased the pocket. I love the pocket. When the gimbal doesn’t know what the camera is seeing the gimbal sucks and is only good for cinematic shots not any vlogging or tracking.
    But my M50 with 22mm f2 is my main camera setup.

  • @gohumberto
    @gohumberto 5 років тому +1

    I own an M50 and to me it seems clear. If you are just vlogging to camera then the DJI is the obvious choice. However if you also want decent photos, or cinematic video, then you'll need a separate camera. The M50 is so good at most things I'd never contemplate buying the DJI but, if you just Vlog to camera, then it's hard to look past the DJI.
    PS. The Viltrox Speed-booster is set to unlock the 4K potential of the M50.

  • @TIMagicProd
    @TIMagicProd 5 років тому +1

    Great review. There is a saying that just about every camera enthusiast knows - "The best camera is the one that you have with you." Even before vlogging became a fad, I started "vlogging" long before in an attempt to have my entire family (including a toddler) in the shot without me being missing all the time (sound familiar?). Small and light cameras changed the game because big and bulky pain-in-the-butt DIY setups caused a lot of missed opportunities. You can have the perfect setup, but you will be more unlikely to have it ready to go on a moment's notice. This has happened to me many times, where I end up grabbing my iPhone and capturing what I can (not ideal, of course). The Osmo Pocket has the advantage of the small and light camera with a built-in gimbal that can be used in a moment's notice, with the sacrifice of overall quality compared to a full-size camera like the Canon M50. True, the Osmo Pocket is a first version, so I cannot fault it too much for its technical shortcomings (i.e. no tripod thread, no interchangeable lenses, and no optional date/time stamp for documentaries common in Chinese action cameras), but being able to capture shots versus not being able to capture shots gives it value.

      It does end up being pretty soft but I was trying to keep them in relative equal price points. The benefit of the m50 is I could have popped on the sigma 18-35 and really upped its quality.

    Hey there, just wanted to chime in on the topic. I actually own a GoPro 7, m50 and osmo pocket. The pocket has actually become my vlogging camera. The GoPro is pretty bad in low light, the m50 is the superior camera but it’s still large for a lot of different vlogging activities. The pocket has pretty decent low light capabilities for such a small sensor, the autofocus has been much improved with the firmware update and the size of it make it for an amazing vlogging camera. I don’t have a top of the line phone to compare it to so that’s the one caveat I have with my experience. Personally I’d recommend the pocket over the m50 if you someone that isn’t super into cameras and wants a vlogging rig that’s super easy to use and take with you. If your someone who wants the absolute best picture quality and doesn’t mind carrying a bigger rig around then I would say get the m50. I don’t agree with the GoPro over either unless your into activities that would damage the other cameras. GoPro’s footage is nice in optimal lighting but falls apart in low light. Just my 2 cents, love the videos!

    The Osmo Pocket is way better at presenting a better viewing experience. The Pocket video is cleaner, more in focus and mechanical gimbals make the video such that it unfair to compare against digital stabilization. I have Pocket now for two weeks and indoor low light is grainy, but outside /in good lighting the video is outstanding. Your video confirms all this and more. Thanks

    For someone like me that already has the GoPro Hero black 7, and the Osmo Pocket gimbal +iPhone + filmic pro, do I need the Osmo Pocket? Probably not. The one think I like is how discreet the Osmo Pocket is, even like for events where no cell phones are allowed or sometimes at places where security scorts you out for using a big gimbal.

  • @MegaWoodswalker
    @MegaWoodswalker 5 років тому +2

    So so auto focus vs poor stabilization. I think my Nikon D5300 has sharp 1080p (manual everything). I haven’t been motivated to get another dslr or try a mirrorless. Maybe if The M50 wasn’t intentionally crippled at 4K might have considered one. On a side note played around with the new Hero 7 black. 1080p linear really looks ok. It was raining crazy and that’s the best part. No case and ok native audio. Ordered stuff for my Videomicro just the same. I think it beats both of these for Vlogging or B camera though next would be the M50 between the Pocket IMHO. Good video.

    • @astigmatik

      the main reason that people should buy the osmo pocket over the gopro is that it has a moving hyperlapse/timelapse mode that the gopro can never do. everything else is fairly equal.

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker 5 років тому +1

      I haven't played with that mode on the Gopro H7B yet though the videos on YT looked rather amazing for the new timewarp which is a stabilized smooth hyperlapse. I mean it really really really looks fantastic compared to the H6B. I have been using a Sony AS20 (several) in addition other cameras. So went with the H7B for waterproof and linear mode to blend in the footage better.

    In the studio comparison, the Canon M50 looked surprisingly out of focus compared to the Osmo pocket. I wish Canon had made more advances with 4K in the M50 and that's a deal-breaker for me at the moment. The Pocket does seem to be a really handy device I can always have on me.

Both looked good in your studio but to me there were times during the outdoor shots that the Osmo's video looked better than the M50's video looked. • @e_Dave
    @e_Dave Рік тому

    Watching all of these older videos on the pocket, I realize that the Osmo Pocket is actually a better deal NOW then it was back then. With both the passing of time and the release of the Pocket 2, you can find great deals for these.
    The Pocket can be found used on eBay for around $150 used. A good deal already, but considering the non-removable battery, you'll probably want to go refurbished for the pocket. That's usually closer to $200-$250. Not insane, but a really good deal which limits the overall price if the pocket when combined with the accessories.
    One thing that IS insane however is currently DJI themselves are selling Pockets on eBay Open-Box and Refurbished (Good on them for not COMPLETELY removing it from their catalog unlike literally every phone company ever). The Open-Box was going for $170 and the refurbished is currently going for $110! I'm not sure how long they'll be there as of writing this due to the Open-box listing being out of stock and the Refurbished listing almost out of stock. There's a chance that they'll sell more, but I'm not 100% sure. Still, THAT'S an insane deal if that's really what you're looking for. But the $200-$250 is also great considering that accessories are also coming down in price.
    Personally, upon seeing reviews, the Pocket 2 has better specs and accessories, but the footage coming out of the Pocket looks better. The Pocket 2 is lower contrast but higher saturation which gives it a weird washed out look, and has a really unnatural skin-softening look which to my knowledge can't be turned off. And, some accessories for the Pocket 2 are compatible with the Pocket, like, oh I don't know, a WIDE ANGLE LENS ADAPTER. The DJI one is pretty pricey, but more affordable 3rd party ones exist as well.
    Honestly, judging by all of these old TED videos, I'm really tempted to purchase a Pocket now more than ever as an On-the-go vlogging camera. I have an Osmo Action for POV and Underwater use, and a G85 for Filmmaking/Produced videos. The power three may well be upon me.

    I think a gopro hero 6/7 on a gimbal with a rode video micro kicks both these camera's asses. It's the best of both worlds without having to invest in so much ecosystem, and this is coming from a person with a line of full frame canon glass. But I always resort back to my gopro, because it's so nimble, works in every condition, completely waterproof, always in focus and still can get cinematic 120p b-roll shots as well as vlog, all in 4k. Sad to say, but not even my full frame 6dii on a crane 2 can do that, and that's a 4 grand setup.

Even a phone on a gimbal is too much for me. Besides when I am traveling, I need the phone for navigating when I am lost, checking for nearby restaurants etc. The Osmo Pocket is ideal for filming unobtrusively in high traffic areas where carrying around a larger gimbal set up is not practical.

    Why do people insist on comparing a 1080p footage to a 4k footage? The comparison should have only focused more on image quality on the same settings: 1080p 60fps on both and 4k 30fps on both. Also lowlight comparison was bad because they were on different settings. The autofocus should have been tested thoroughly instead of you just saying the osmo was bad. Videos are meant to SHOW not for you to TELL. If it can be shown, show it, don't say it only.

    • @astigmatik
      @astigmatik 5 років тому

      Don't get me wrong. If comparisons were to be made, all the categories should have been equal (fiddliness is ok, lowlight, autofocus, battery life, overheating, abrupt change of exposure, color settings, image-centric features of both, etc). Then, you have an objective comparison.

    At first I thought what an usual comparison !
    However price wise it does make sense. I thought the image quality of osmosis in 4k was far better than m50 in 1080.
    I am a canon owner and I despair at canon's marketing strategy which is why I have not purchased a new canon for over 8 years !
    If the m50, eos R etc had IBIS, non crop 4k ( or at least a very small element of a crop ) the likes of sony and osmosis would have an extremely difficult time winning over the once loyal canon owner. For me I would mate the osmosis to the smartphone as that is what I have on me all of the time.
    For the dual card slot issues on cameras which only have one, well why do the big 3 not built in wireless transfer of jpegs, raw, and video file from camera to smartphone as a direct copy of what is on the camera sd card !
    Not ideal solution, however certainly a very workable solution.

  • @ksmackvolleyball
    @ksmackvolleyball 5 років тому +1

    You are correct in saying that the Pocket has limited uses and would be used as a 2nd camera.
    If you lived in a city where you attended plenty of public events with loads of people around, it might be beneficial to have a Pocket cause very few people would even notice that you are recording video.
    And on a side note; Canon recently released a super cool new camcorder called the XF705.
    This new model could possibly make you drool. (grin)

    Really great points, but as a run-n-gun/ just film me & go - vlogging style camera - the Osmo Pocket looks and sounds like the winner to me. Even if the face tracking/ auto focus fails a few times, it is still a feature the other cameras do not have. If you just want to vlog (and not Casey Neistat style b/c that takes skill and $$$ equipment)- but just simply vlog - it's looking like Osmo Pocket is the ticket.

    As much as I love this video you contradict yourself with how you’re pairing up the price with the accessories but yet in the comparison you don’t use any of the accessories. I know nothing can really replace a mirrorless or a DSLR camera but with the accessories it has gotten pretty close

Underdeveloped product, rushed to market and the support service from DJI seems to be almost none existent. Had an email response from DJI after 5 days and still no conclusion. Hopefully we can get a refund! Buyer beware!! Canon quality and support is in a different league.
