That does make a lot of sense, start out simple and grow from there. You can always go back and add shading later. You WILL get better the more you color. I just got Tim Holtz new woodless watercolor pencils but I’ve had COVID so I haven’t felt like coloring. Hopeful by next week I’ll be ready to put color to paper.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I won't color in my so-called "special" books because I know that I can't do them justice, therefore, I have some cheaper books, that I color in. I save the "special" ones for a time in the future when I feel that I can make them beautiful. Thanks for sharing, it's nice to know that I'm not alone in my totally ridiculous way of thinking. Someday, hopefully, I will feel that I have enough talent to make my coloring pictures look the way I envision them being.

I have a 48 speedball canvas zip case that has all of my most used pencils, mostly prismas but Crayola, Cray-z-art and various others. I only put my nubbies and colors I constantly replace in it, a micron, eraser and a pencil. They do fluctuate a bit over time but this is the case I travel with. It has every color I know I auto reach for. I say travel loosely, as I travel around my house and yard too. Any time I am stuck on what to use I just grab my travel case as it has already been curated with time. I have a second case this same size that is set up for drawing.
Too much anything can be overwhelming, even for those of us who have done art and coloring for ages. I have more supplies than I know what to do with sometimes.
I think it’s brilliant that you’ve found a way to work through those overwhelming moments that works for you.

    • @LindaLearnstoColor

Love how you have a case that is ready to go and it probably has some of your favorites in there. What a great idea. That is another way to bring it back to the basics.
I think sometimes the having so many like the 120-150 sets it's just too hard especially for a person who has a hard time picking colors.
Less is more for sure at times. I mean I have started three now four pages with just reaching for my smaller sets.
      Thank you for visiting 💕

hi Linda! that's a marvelous idea! and the fact it came while praying makes it magnificent!😄...i have a 120 set of starjoy pencils and its my largest. i actually prefer small sets. i have a markart 48 set and misc set of prisma color pencils i got from my mama after she passed. they are special🥰...i have started two pages in the last week and Both have been big flops! hahaha! they were not from Nice books thank the Lord😄...anyway, i decided to get some WIPs done...i can certainly relate to what you were saying!....the pages you have started in Daydreams are looking very pretty!!...i'm going to use my verithin prisma color pencils today. i recently purchased them. i think it's 36 count. i like them! see ya soon. i know my comments are long winded.🥴🤗🙋

I also get afraid to color in some of my so called "precious" books. Took me forever to start in the rita berman Europe book. I think many of us struggle with wanting to be perfect in books that we love. I have to keep reminding myself that it is just paper and a pretty picture that I have a million of. So what if the picture doesn't turn out like all the beautiful pictures I see from others. As long as I think it's beautiful and feel happy while I'm doing it is all that matters. Most of the time I'm happy once I'm done but if I'm not...well I have a gazillion more to mess up on...lol...i mean try better on. Anyways I just wanted to let you know you are not an odd ball with your feelings and share my thought process through it. Maybe it can help. ❤️😊

I have perfectionism paralysis too, it's like when i start a new notebook (another one of my fave things) and I try to be as neat on the first page as possible & as soon as it isn't neat I feel like i've ruined it, lol. We are our own worst enemy. I know I've been coloring over 7 yrs. with colored pencils and I still can beat myself up over a picture that doesn't meet my standards. My favorite pencils are the Prismas - so soft and creamy, but I feel most relaxed coloring when using the Marco Raffine 72 set. They cost $14.99 way back when and still cost that on Amazon. I can easily get bored coloring a big sheet so I often copy a page but reduce the picture to 5"x8". If I screw up coloring I haven't wasted as much time and I can always make another copy. My aim has always been to have a picture that looks realistic so it's important to me that the artist's drawing is realistic. Does the cat wearing a tuxedo look like a real cat I could pet?Do faces look like someone you could talk to or is it distorted with huge eyes and no nose? If it's not realistic I'm not interested in the book. Since realism is important to me it limits my color choices. As a beginner I think I'd advise not worrying about shading. Get to know how each of your art supplies react with each of your books papers Matching pencils to paper is over half the battle IMHO. Try to enjoy coloring and try not to beat yourself up. There are millions of drawings waiting for you to apply color.🎨♿👵 Barb N.

What a clever idea, reducing the size of the page, I get bored too sometimes and feel as if I'll never get it finished, plus I have arthritis in my hands and they ache after a while. Thanks for sharing, I love this idea 😃

I made it to the end. Being intimidated by colouring in your books, especially hard backs is not unusual. I just do my best and learn through practise. Straight colouring is ok too. By watching you tube and seasoned professionals on both this platform and Instagram you see other ppls pictures and by putting those ideas into your books it enriches your experience. I only compare myself to my beginner self, that’s important too. Thanks for your video xxx

Hey Linda, I just loved this video! AND your cute accent😊. You have put into words what so many of us feel, and you have provided a simple solution to get people started on using their books and pencils. A few years ago I had just a handful of colouring books and a set of 36 Derwent pencils, and I thought that was enough. Then I discovered UA-cam😒🤔😄😁. At first I thought some of the colourists were mad buying all those books and colouring media, but I never criticised anyone, as to each his own. But after a while, I got sucked in and started buying more books because as you said, they are so pretty just to look through, even if you don't colour them at first. Then because I have always been artistic (with fabric as well as paint and pencils) I couldn't help myself, and started buying sets of gorgeous pencils. Last year I counted the pages in all my colouring books (63 at the time)! and calculated that if I coloured one page a week it would take me 45 years to complete them all. Well guess what, I am lucky if I get to colour one page a month, and at my age, most of those books will remain pristine😁.
As for colouring pencils, I suffer from FSS too, and thought I had the full set of 72 Prismacolors, but recently discovered the full set was actually 150😒. Was lucky to find then on sale on Amazon for half price, so I now have them all. I only have the smaller sets (24 or 36) of others that I love, such as Polychromous and Inktense, but have come to my senses and decided enough is enough for me, and to make the most of what I have.
I have done a few flipthroughs on my channel but not much of what I have coloured in, so I should make some time to do more of those. I spend hours watching other colourists like Nicole's Happy Place, Rachel Henderson, Colorfully Optimistic, etc, and I shamelessly follow their examples to colour my books😊

Thank you, for your kind words. You are so sweet. I need to check out your channel.
I had a hard time conveying what I wanted to say. I often feel like my fear comes across as complaining which it's not and I am to grateful that those watching understand and don't see it that way.
I just really want to be there for others who enjoy coloring but also have that "fear" of coloring. Anyway, just wanted to let viewers know that they are not alone 🦋
When I first tried coloring back in 2015/16 I started with a 70 set of Prismas, set of Polychromos, and Derwent Inktense. I didn't realize that they were really nice pencils at the time but it's what most youtuber color along artist were using and I wanted to have the same exact pencils.
Unfortunately I stopped coloring about a year later (not that I did that much). Then when I jumped back in a year ago, I was like, wow, what are all these pencils and the addiction began 😂
I'll have to come back later to finish replying. The little guy just woke up and is hungry.

I’ve been thinking about this today because I am finding myself in a similar state of paralysis. It isn’t choosing colors for me so much as the huge array of wonderful books and pictures. I end up just starting on the first page of each book because I just can’t make a choice. Then when I DO make a choice I have to repeat trying to decide if I want to use watercolor or pencils, etc. The colors seem to suggest themselves with the image in my mind, but I do have a similar choice fatigue like yoou explained so well.
