    00:52 - the referee had just given the england captain a talking to and told him to speak to his players, which is did, but then allowed Wales to take a quick penalty which the chat was taking place. - Referees are generally fantastic in rugby union and a huge part of the game, But this what not a good moment for the referee, especially given they had the option of video review.

      A defending team should always be ready for a quick play in that kind of situation, schoolboy error by Farrell, not the refs fault.

      @@Brownie-ms6sv There is no "that kind of situation" cos it should never happen... If I ref tells a captain to talk to his team, time goes off and play should not start until the Defending team are ready as they are the ones who have been told to have a talk. If you look at the actual game - the time wasn't even put back on after the penalty was tapped as the tech team were so surprised that the ref allowed this to happen

      Somewhere on UA-cam someone reviewed this try from all angles. Zoomed out, England players had already started to disperse to the opposite touch time from where the try was scored. I agree in this particular game the ref wasn't great (the other try Wales scored for example).

      James O'Connor has a funny little move during his pre-kick routine where he moves his foot. The referee ruled that the foot came off the ground, which counts as starting the kick. With professional opponents, refs, TMOs, and video analysts, "trick" plays seldom work any more. You still sometimes see trick lineouts at pro level, and the rate of return seems pretty terrible.
      There still no end of set plays, but they tend to start at scrum or lineout, where you can dictate/predict the opposition's starting shape.

    Get rid of the tactical replacement law and we could have this nearly every game. All that law has done is brought bigger, heavier slugs (50 minutes of fast Rugby and they're buggered) into the game. Brains and muscle are mutually exclusive (most of the time). All shapes and sizes means nippy, aggressive compressed lightning bolts can return to play at the highest levels.
    ps: Medical replacement is possible with some protocols. e.g. Diagnosis by match day doctor concerning recovery time is an effective ban, etc. Teams won't risk iffy players.

      I think there was a letter sent to the World Rugby, by eminent doctors and ex-rugby players on that very point, arguing that tactical replacements will result in the death of a player, because of the way they are being used to bring on fresh battering rams defended by semi-exhausted opposition.

    • @peterclark6290
      @peterclark6290 3 роки тому

      @Zacariah Anderson Do you mean that deliberate work-to-rule campaign that was the most recent Lion's tour? I hear that loud and clear. An embarrassing spectacle.
      Rassi really suited being the midwife giving 'his boys' more recovery time between between tears and pushes. It hinted at what Hollywood's version of a wet nurse would be.
      However the Lions were their slow motion equal. They didn't learn too much in how to slow Rugby down to a pace Sir Frances Drake could participate.

      @@bitchoflivingblah Thanks for that info. I really hope that's true, recent and they read it. It would do a lot to restore the game's speed, craftiness and intelligence; i.e., the goosebump factor. Rugby has become a bit like an Arms Race with Brezhnev leading both sides.

      In an open letter to World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont - signed by Sir Ian McGeechan, Willie John McBride, Sir Gareth Edwards, Barry John and John Taylor as well as consultant surgeon professor John Fairclough - it is claimed the professional game "has become unnecessarily dangerous".
      The letter references fears of current players not daring to speak out over "fear of losing their livelihood" and quotes the concerns of former Wales captain Sam Warburton that someone "will die during a game in front of TV cameras" if nothing is done.
      "It would be grossly negligent to allow the status quo to continue," the letter continued.
      "Rugby union was conceived as a 15-a-side game for 30 players. With the current eight substitutes per side, many of whom are tactical 'impact players' or 'finishers', this can and often does stretch to 46.
      "More than half a team can be changed, and some players are not expected to last 80 minutes so train accordingly, prioritising power over aerobic capacity. This shapes the entire game, leading to more collisions and in the latter stages numerous fresh 'giants' crashing into tiring opponents.
      "The simple change we advocate is to allow eight subs on the bench if you must, but limit the number that can be used to four and then only in the case of injury.
      "This will make the game safer, a view supported by leading players and eminent members of the medical profession."
      The letter continued: "We know that World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont agrees with us. In January 2020, he expressed his concern that 'rugby had become a game for big people' and backed a trial law whereby players could only be replaced if injured.
      "Sadly, more than 18 months later World Rugby has done nothing - yet again it stands accused of all words and no action.

    The Welsh scoring against the English was terrible refereeing.

    • @bitchoflivingblah
      @bitchoflivingblah 3 роки тому

      Terrible defending. We were always taught never to turn our back on the opposition as children, ever, no matter what. England decide to have a pow-wow behind the goal line with everyone happy to turn away from the Welsh. Biggar must have looked at that and though what a bunch of idiots - I can tell you that was what was running through my mind - and it didn't surprise me in the least he decided to ASK the referee when time would be back on. When the referee obliged, only two Englishplayers had sussed what was happening, the rest were still in the huddle digesting the thoughts of Farrell. Must have been a great speech.

    • @sketch3744
      @sketch3744 3 роки тому +3

      Are you daft? The ref specifically told Farrel to bring the team in and have a chat about repeated infringements then when they came in to chat he had a brain fade and told the welsh to play when the entire english forward pack was still in a huddle. You can't do that as a referee. He even said he fucked up big time as did the irb itself and literally every other pro ref on the planet. How the fuck are you supposed to defend when the ref has blown time off and called you to come over and have a chat then allowed play to resume the moment you're out of position? I hate the english just as much as the next guy but that's a shocking take chalking it up to bad defence...

Though not as bad as the one O'Gara scored against South Africa in similar fashion, at least England had had their chat and then the ref didn't give them time to line up after, with the Ireland-South Africa one the South African captain was still in the middle of talking to the players when the ref called time on.

Making them a little less special. Fifa have got it kinda sorted with football . International teams don't play all that often and club teams play alot . International teams are more exclusive. Having a big club tournament for rugby would give alot more opportunities to alot more players and countries than test rugby does.
