Remember being stoned the first time I listened to this in 94. Some guy bought the CD when it came out. Me and some friends went to his apartment, lighted up a joint and put on the CD. It was perfect.
One of the best bass bars ever combined with virtuous guitar, so complex and tricky increasing to the end that I needed years walking around sound to catch it. They are much more than just underrated. So did stone roses were far far far ahead of its time. Driving south is huge too.
'Stone Roses' was the perfect name for them. One part of them was a outwardly confident gang wanting to blow complacency away and remind people of hard rock. It's as if they took Thatcherite confidence but used it for their own, more 'One Love' ends. Another part of them was introspective, tender, dreamers, wanting to remind people of the likes of Simon and Garfunkel (remember the heartbreaking closing part of Standing Here?). Second Coming sees The Stone Roses jamming, especially on Daybreak and the latterpart of Breaking in to heaven, like there's no tomorrow. As far as they were concerned, there was no tomorrow- they'd done all that they needed to musically. And it's true- they had. If you look at The Complete Stone Roses which contains some songs from Garage Flower (as opposed to just 'The Stone Roses') you see that many of their greatest songs were never on their 2 major albums or were kept as B-sides. And what about Driving South? Better than Love Spreads really. They had the balls of bands from the 1970s and the demeanour of innocent cherubs wanting a more youthful age. That's why they are the 'Stone' 'Roses'.
Picnicl They didn't take anything from Thatcher. I know what you're trying to say but Thatcher was anathema to them. They didn't draw any enegy from Tories - they had their own swagger despite them. It's like saying kids in 1950s Germany used Hitler confidence. I'm sorry if this sounds like nitpicking cos I really enjoyed the rest of your post.
When I cranked up second coming i can honestly remember feeling relieved that the first track was so good. I always wondered how the album would have been received if they had left off straight to the man, begging you and good times (maybe even tightrope). It’s all subjective though, I really can’t stand begging you, followed by straight to the man/good times. But i have also seen people hating on tears, and that for me is one of their greatest tracks.
No doubt that band politics and legal issues created quite an obstacle for them and I don't think the second album is anything like as complete as the first, which is up there with the best debuts ever and has the kind of total respect that most bands dream of but... The second album truly has some some sublime moments. This is one. Missed by many of course who trawl the web and don't hear the into, but it's been in my head since the first time I heard it. A big pretentious overdubbed grand two fingers in the air to radio and its boundaries. In the same way that 'I am the resurrection' closed an album like few others, this opens a track in a way few bands could ever contemplate. The cocky buggers and their personality is written all over it. And you have to love the fact the it's all leading to such a satisfying bass and guitar into to the eventual song. Up there in their own way with the Kinks, The Who, The Faces, Peter Green. Essential among the Manchester bands that have helped shape the next generation. Shame, Shane Meadows bumbled the documentary then... Or someone stopped him.
This is me. This is just a little insight to the Mancunian mind lol. surviving the 192 down the a6 with only the stone roses in your ear , That my freinds is heaven
Would have to disagree there, every song on The Stone Roses is absoloute magic, the second coming has a few weak links, although this is up there with one of the best tunes ever in my opinion

the number of views show how little the SR is appreciated. this is an amazing record.
