  • Edd is a technical cave diver known for his numerous rescues of lost or trapped divers in the underwater caves of Florida, particularly in Vortex Springs and Blue Springs Recreational Park.
His diving career started back in 1995 in the Pacific Northwest, which sparked a passion for the world beneath the water’s surface. Over the years which followed, he pursued his education in diving. While on vacation in Florida in 1996 to wreck dive the Spiegel Grove, which had been blown out, he found a new love for cave diving doing a cavern dive at Ginnie Springs. He was rebreather certified in 1997, full cave certified in 1998 and over the years, has become one of cave diving’s most known instructor trainers working for several training agencies.
In 1999, Edd was asked to join the International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery (IUCRR) as one of the founding members. He did his first body recovery in 1999 at Ginnie Springs in High Springs, FL. A few years later in 2003, he founded Cave Adventurers.
Edd is now the Safety Director for the NSS-CDS and was awarded the Life Saving Award in 2013. Last year at the 2019 NSS-CDS International Conference, Edd received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, the NSS-CDS named an award after him, the “Edd Sorenson Life Saving Award” which this year was awarded to Rick Stanton from the UK for his part in last year’s Thai Cave Rescue.

All I do is side mount. Love it. Easy to trim. Safer. You have access to your tanks. Probably never go to doubles or back mount again.

    • @wakenow7612

Access is a huge deal with back mount, taking gear off to squeeze through things or diagnose a malfunction is never a good situation. Having everything readily at hand is definitely easier

I don’t think there’s anything more scary then popping up on a lost or distressed diver, it has to be so worrisome, like I wanna help, but if you come at me I have to protect myself

I have to be honest... I'm not a diver. My boyfriend is "just" a recreational scuba diver who does a trip to Egypt to do guided dives every second year. I just briefly snorkeled in what I would consider very close distance to spots I can stand up right and my heads above water...
But man... Dive talk and their videos have taken me down quite a (flooded) rabbit hole xD
I now want Edd to write a book or narrate his stories as an audio book...

Edd mentions how he's guided to bodies. He always has amazing "luck". What he does, is impossible when tried by another man.
When is someone going to interview him about this thing that helps him. I think he mentions, but always downplays it for fear of the ridicule I'm sure to receive.

I really think Ed's story think the 2nd maybe 3rd about the 2 guy's and one got stuck and his buddy could not free him is a gr8 storyline to show how just "Simply Panicking" can literally KILL you I think Divers do not put the importance of Not Panicking as high up on the list of how to survive an Emergency Situation as they should people tend to minimize how Deadly panicking is... This guy in his story for example had 2 tanks of air both over 100cf of air and died with over 2000psi why did he die well again if you listened 👂 he PANICKED and he then Diched "removed" his only source of breathable Air causing drowning/ suffocation appx. 2min "according to his Dive Computer" 💻🖥️🖥️💻 Before ED could get to him and get him out... Showing how what should have been a "Simple Rescue" turned into a Needless Body Recovery all because of a Diver _____________ (fill in the blank.) Also I used quotes " " around Simple Rescue because no Cave Rescue is simple but as far as cave rescues go this should have been "Simple" and ED should have had a successful Rescue "Another One Mind You" but sadly this guy was deceased now as for the fill in the blank from above if you're answer was Panicking or panicked then well done class you got the Right Answer... So to recap "Kid's" Diver to Diver put (Don't PANIC EVER IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION at the VERY TOP of the List AS IT'S THE REASON YOU WILL LIVE OR DIE.) this guy would have survived should he have not panicked as what Diver Not Panicking would Ditch / Remove his ONLY Source of breathable Air Not I that's for sure... Also you may notice I keep saying "Breathable Air" well for you non divers and some OW divers who may not know, I say Breathable Air because 1. We as divers have Compressed Air in our Dive Tanks NOT OXYGEN/O² and 2. Not all Air is Breathable especially in a Cave, yes some caves do have Air Pockets on the roof of the cave, but without a gas sampling device of some type, and you breath the air in these air pockets you have nooo idea what the gas make-up is and yea you may remove your regulator and find you can breathe just fine or you may remove your regulator and find you just took a big breath of "Methane, Carbon dioxide (Co²) or Mabey even Natural Gas (umm oh NOooo lol" I think you see my point... also in some cases it is a hypoxic mix of gas meaning a low content of Oxygen 0² meaning you seem to be breathing just fine but are slowly losing Oxygen (0²) to the brain and will eventually go unconscious due to Hypoxia...
