  • Anohana: the Flower We Saw that Day is an emotional drama & slice of life anime that explores past coming back to life, the mania that could cause, and how to "fix" it all. As if he put in some cheat code for life, Jinta gets the chance to see his childhood love Menma once again, even though she died years prior. Overwrought with guilt, Anohana explores how Jinta, Anjo, Popo, Yukiatsu, and Chiriko deal with "fixing" the past, and how they each take the chance in selfish ways in the anime. Did they want to help their old friend move on to heaven, or simply absolve themselves of sin? Even though the anime turns 10 in 2021, lets make like it's cast and get caught up in the past...
Anohana may be majorly a slice of life, but the anime takes dips into other genres, like light elements of psychological, supernatural plot elements, or of course, a healthy heaping of drama. While Menma and Jinta may take up most of the screen time, the entire cast presents some great additions. Popo explores a sort of survivors guilt, Chiriko a feeling of inferiority, Yukiatsu the idea of masking trauma, and Anjo a feeling of unrequited love. While the series may have some issues with the development of it's women, overall it takes an emotional and in-depth look at a downright amazing story.

Menma's mother's emotional breakdown was the pivotal point in the story with The Super Peace Busters gang seeing how Menma's death affected someone outside of their friendship circle up close. The emotions of Parents losing a child will hit hard.

The past is what makes us who we are, but don't let it hold you back or drag you down. And that's what Menma represented, them letting go of that heavy emotional anchor and moving forward.
I'd recommend "NOEIN: To Your Other Self." It's probably one of the best SciFi anime I've seen in a long time, and is interestingly similar to this in-that it follows a group of friends and how one event can change Everything.

What breaks my heart the most is that jinta's mom most likely died also feeling responsable for menma's death 😢

This was actually a really good analysis of this anime, and I'm super glad I found it as you break down the complexities of it wonderfully.

Absolutely perfect, this is my favourite piece of media of all time because nothing has ever pulled such intense emotion out of me and made me care so much about a story. As someone who doesn't typically cry at all, this anime made me bawl my eyes out at the end of it, even seeing menma at that tree as the sun pokes through her translucent body will always make my eyes start to sting a little.

8:26 rewatching this video and you make such a great point here. I see this happen with broken relationships too, where people do the whole "I am the best thing that ever happened to them routine" and act as if the moment they stepped out of that person's life it must have been an absolute wreck cause they "missed out" on so much. Sure they'll be sad and it's fair to recognize the value one could have brought to the table. But I also think Anohana shows how unhealthy these types of attitudes are and, in actuality, they just anchor us to people we need to move on from.

Really enjoyed this video and needed to see this after going back to that dark place of just blaming myself and thinking it's all my fault after a relationship ended and this really put a new pov that I needed

I loved this anime, it's so good, makes ya feel so much, I love your videos, and if ya take anime recommendations, I'd recommend katanagatari, its super well done, and and has a unique style, however you sadly have to pirate it to actually watch it, since its license isn't available anywhere but japan, anyway. Love your videos, keep being an awesome UA-camr!

i remember spending two days watching this anime because i wanted something else besides clannad or shows like it. and the show absolutely destroyed me throughout the series until the finale where they all see menma for the last time. i havent watched many sad anime lately but anohana has a special place in my heart for it.
