This is the best documentary I've ever seen I literally cried after watching it. I thought this will be very underrated no one will notice this documentary but thak God here we are
If interfering with nature and nursing the Octopus after the shark attack why not interfere and save the Octopus from the shark attack. If interfering with nature was the logic to staying out of the shark attack, then by that same logic he shouldn't have interfered with nature by nursing the Octopus after the attack, and let the Octopus die. If I'm missing something please inform...
My favorite nature documentary, by far. The score is beautiful. The cinematography. And of course the story. Its beautiful but heart wrenching
Watched last night. Had to force myself not to cry. I was like where is this movie's oscar? So I Googled it... and my faith in the world was restored.
It was a great movie
More People should watch it! Sharing is caring! Maybe it could sensitize them, to stop destroying the Ocean and eating this amazingly, smart Creature. Like in Japan, even eating Octopus alive.
please don't force yourself not to cry
Just cry
It was 100% deserved, I'm happy they won! What an amazing documentary!
Maybe soon an African documentary in French would win
I love this documentary and have watched it several times. The first time, I cried. What a beautiful friendship.
Hope more African documentaries win an Oscar soon. Or more family friendly documentaries too
@@emiliobello2429 that would be nice.
@@ninaedison3008 even African documentaries in French. Maybe a family friendly documentary feature in French
It’s so nice seeing Marlee Matlin in the Oscars, presenting an award.
Yesssss! My Octopus Teacher is so exquisite and *deserves the Oscar.

I don't think I have ever been so moved before watching a documentary, it wasn't just the octopus it was the way graig emotes his passion for a subject we should all be passionate about. There is a deeper meaning to the bond and respect we dhould have with nature. Why we don't focus more on this in eduction is beyond me, it humbles the mind and people these days need humbling more than ever.
My Octopus Teacher has great script. Craig Foster started filming in 2010; the film was ten years in the making and was the first South African nature documentary to be a Netflix Original. My Octopus Teacher is the first nature documentary film from Netflix to win in this category.
Thank you! *Perfectly stated, jwelch. Luis Felix and other haters should pay attention to the truth in your awesome comments!

Dear Craig, you changed my life for me. ❤️
It deserves and it was a beautiful documentary I have ever seen.
What a wonderful documentary! 😊 So sensitive, so respectful with the animals, with our deepest humanity consideration. Thank you so much 👏💕
Just finished the movie my Octopus teacher I fell in love with the octopus too 🐙🦑 I love this movie I wished she never died 😭
Like Charlottes Web
Thanks for the spoiler
i know I am kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
I was half way and already in love with the octopus so I decided to stop because I knew she would die and I could not prepare myself enough to see it. Hoping one of these days I am brave enough to watch until the end
@@andreaparedes5641 spoiler alert. Thanks for telling everyone the ending!
When you see her speaking sign language, don't you feel inspired to learn it as well?
no
omg its true they forgot to thanks the octopus...
shows how little the filmmakers really cared about this manipulative project that collective far surpasses
Cant say im too surprise about that. Do you honestly think they care? Oscars have been tricked by giving this the award
It was 100% deserved and more raw compared to the other nominees (not to downplay how amazing they were too). To those disagreeing with this Oscar win are probably closed minded (not to be taken personally or offensively), and weren't able to learn/ open their mind enough to truly understand we humans are no greater and are only one on our shared planet. There's a huge difference between knowing that and understanding that. Most people (including myself prior) subconsciously disregard(ed) other life because the human ego is big. The other documentaries were outstanding but all revolved around us so naturally they're going to be more comforting without realizing bc the mind doesn't have to think as hard. (Just noting that my comment is not a biased, this is all coming from a person who was ignorant prior to understanding).
It's so weird how you say something rude then say not to be offensive. I like that it won but that doesn't mean people who wanted others to win was close minded.
"My Octopus Teacher" is a great film! I'm so glad it won the Oscar!
I was too. The Reason I Jump should have been nominated. Shame The Mole Agent lost, hope a movie in Spanish wins Best Documentary Feature
The documentary was great. Wish the octopus never died.
I wished he would have stepped in to help it more. I understand the code in nature photography but this is obviously an intelligent creature who considered him a friend. Maybe feeding it some soft lobster claw and placing it back in shelter after giving birth.
Like Charlotte’s Web in real life. Died before it’s offspring hatched
I hope Marlee gets nominated next year for CODA
🐙🐙🐙Poignant and powerful! Loved this✨
You need psychological help if you thought it was powerful.
@@luisfelix9747 Duh, you need psychological help if you feel the need to criticize someone else's positive opinion of the documentary. It won an OSCAR! So obvi you're wrong. Take care now.
I loved it too! I so agree with what you said.
Same. 4th win for South Africa
Why it wasn’t nominated for Best Movie and Best Cinematography!?
It should have won Best Picture over Nomadland
amazing. It's great that a movie that is great for families won Best Documentary
I totally agree with you on it's great for families.
Saying it's great that it won the Oscar is a lie.
@@jonathanwall2628 which should have won then?
@@emiliobello2538 Many over it, but mainly Collective. Many great documentaries this year. One of the most op years. This was good and sweet but standard compared to others and manipulated. Even if you disagree with that last word about it, it just is not one of the best and does not have the most to say over other nature movies already made about octopuses intelligence and interaction with humans. This has been done many times. It won cause the people that vote for documentaries at the oscars each year likes to always snub the frontrunners and best ones throughout its history. Otherwise, Dick Johnson Is Dead would have gotten in.
@@jonathanwall2628 I will see Collective soon
@@jonathanwall2628 It's your opinion and you are entitled to her, in my opinion, this was truly deserved. Collective was also very good but it's another documentary like Inside Job, Fahrenheit 9/11, or Zeitgeist (the subject is different but all are documentaries that make us discover the hidden truth). This theme is completely different, and that's why it's won. It's about connecting with nature and it's very well done.
Hope there are more Oscars for South Africa
Ahaha the director James Reed went to the same high school as me ✌️
Even after watching all the nasty peta torture videos this was the movie to make me vegetarian
Amazing
the people saying this was deserved have definitely only seen a few documentaries before deciding lol
definitely have only seen the ones that were on netflix
The Documentary was good!
good, yes. oscar winner worthy, no.
Yes, Offical, you're right. it is Oscar-worthy because it's simply amazing!
@@nowitstimetosee18 It won an Oscar, so yessssssssssssssssss, it IS Oscar-worthy! Facts for ya.
@@orchiddeathresurrections1385 "a bunch of 80 year old men that dont even watch 95% of movies each year and just vote for whichever film is popular gave it an oscar so that must mean its oscar worthy. green book is also the best film of 2018 just because it somehow won best picture. shakespeare in love is also better than saving private ryan."
@@nowitstimetosee18 So by your logic, NO movies that have ever WON Oscars ever actually deserved Oscars. Umm, no. Disagree with you. My Octopus Teacher is outstanding, period. Take care now :-)
What’s the background music when they are walking to the grab the award and give the speech?
i thought i was the only one. what kind of dumbed down version of the academy are we getting this year?
"I also want to thank the Octopus" there, fixed it.
This was most hardest pick for me. All Nominated Documentaries were fabulous. My favourite was The Mole Agent. I also loved Welcome to Chechnya, Truffle hunters and Boy State. Gunda was also highly underrated too.
All of those you mentioned were on the 15 shortlisted semifinalists.
They should have nominated Truffle Hunters as well as Us Kids and Spelling The Dream. Hope a documentary in Spanish wins the Oscars
The Mole Agent, Time, Collective, Crip Camp > My Octopus Teacher
I agree with most of the comments here, great documentary but a bad winner when placing it side by side with its competition, its 1 of the best nature documentaries this year, thats it when it comes to recognition, probably my 19th fav out of them
She looks kak nervous! 😁
They should have nominated Greta, Spelling The Dream, and The Speed Cubers. And Once Upon a Time In Venezuela and The Social Dillema. But all the nominees are great
the human failed the octopus, he did not help her with the shark attack.
I love this 🐙🐙🐙🐙💝
Confusing choice. Can't say it's deserved. Sweet documentary feature, but Crip Camp and Collective stomps it in every aspect.
All of the documentaries looked good
A very nice documentary......................................... it winning the Oscar though is a giant meme and laughable
Great documentary. But I prefer Collective by a landslide. That should have won. That was my favorite documentary of the year.
Maybe next time a Romanian documentary would win
I wonder if will a documentary in Spanish win Best Documentary Feature
The Hasbeen Academy has a bias against any foreign movies so it will take a while for that to happen (or happen again if it already did). That is why 2 Mediocre Documentary Features have now won 2 Years in a Row with this and American Factory out of the Amazing Foreign Documentary Features like Collective.
@@nowitstimetosee18 maybe soon
This year’s Oscars was such a weird, uncomfortable and disturbing production. A high school production team could have done a better job. I’m glad this film wasn’t overlooked and won on its own merit.
None of them came close to Collective.
No one came close in boredom to Collective
@@clapper5481 Did you not understand how much more colossally important the information was in that film compared to the others?
You're absolutely right, no other doc was even close to collective! What a stupid pick, tf.
@@johnsailorsgoat Not to mention the documentary itself while being the most informative and important was still quite entertaining with how they did things and extremely well made out of the nominations unlike other informative documentaries that are just boring and is something you would see be played at a high school like RBG. Collective was easily the best one out of the five and is the only one that actually deserved the nominee.
This documentary is from Romania
My Octopus Teacher was good, but Collective was phenomenal and absolutely should have won.
Soon a documentary in Romanian will win
I can't believe this won best documentary. Huge problem with "My Octopus Teacher" Spoiler alert. The main character that befriends the Octopus doesn't help the Octopus when the Octopus is attacked and badly wounded by the shark. The main character could have helped/saved the Octopus from the attack but said he didn't want to "interfere with nature". His very next act is to try to nurse the Octopus back to health. Isn't that interfering with nature? If he was all about letting nature take its course he should have left the wounded Octopus alone and let the Octopus die. Interfering after the attack is ridiculous. If he was going to play nurse and "interfere with nature" after the attack - with that same logic - he should have interfered with nature and saved the Octopus from the attack in the first place. The guy was forgetting that we are all part of nature and if he helped the Octopus that would have been nature taking its course. Seems like that guy learned nothing. There are stories of animals saving other animals and humans all the time. This movie is stating; that because we are human we are not a part of nature. A total blind spot most likely because we are surrounded by society and forget our connection to nature. This is a flawed documentary.
The only who I watch won, nice
Bet that was the case with many Oscar voters as well.
@@oskari7121 More like a fact.
this is now 2-3 years in a row that the oscar for this category and the short movie categories went to the worst out of the noms
american factory: "i am the worst best documentary oscar winner in recent memory!"
my octopus teacher: "hold my beer."
a GOOD documentary
a HORRIBLE choice for best documentary
especially in a year this stacked with many masterful documentaries that have far more to say
Like which ones?
🐙
There are a phone book long list of movies I can think of that blows My Octopus Teacher out of the water this year (no pun intended)
Mole agent was robbed
Wrong
Yes
yeaaaaaaa... uh... let me put this lightly for everyone here. nothing wrong with my octopus teacher. compared to the over hundred other documentaries from 2020 though... this winning the oscar is total bollocks.
I wish this lady had give some time to the other producer at least to say a few words! Geez!!!!!
Not a damn mask in sight.. hypocrites
Just finished watching this.
Did it deserve to win? GOD NO. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
But it also does not deserve a bunch of the hate it was received by critics.
It is at the end of the day still a beautiful nature documentary with heartfelt messages. :)
All of the people that voted for this over Collective and Time should get checked for dementia
When it's about a guy lusting over an octopus it gets Best Documentary. But if it's about Mister Rogers then it gets shafted. What is this?
Did you watch it? I don’t think you did.
Clearly you haven't watched the film. Your troll game is very ignorant and weak.
Ugh, Mr. Roger's Neighbothood was a TV sitcom. Oscar's don't have that kind of category.
Not a movie. Fred won several Emmy's throughout his career
"Lusting"...ummmm, not even close. Try again. It is an excellent documentary. Too bad you don't understand its depth, pun intended.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
As quoted from The Oscar Experts Reaction Video after Green Books BP win:
"A good movie. But a 💩 choice for best docu of the year."
This documentary in a nutshell:
Octopus: Out in the open looking for something to eat Dude out of nowhere watching it: "IT IS TELLING ME TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND APPRECIATE LIFE!!!!!!!!!!" Then slap some good underwater cinematography in that pile of mediocrity with overused quotes and discussions about nature and the environment and you get My Octopus Teacher. What a garbage winner!
This documentary was so exploitative - terrible win.
How so?? Do you say the same thing about Nature TV with David Atenborough.
@@lilbit2870 i don’t watch Attenborough’s documentary’s but I assume that he and his crew keep a respectful distance from the animals. The reason I find this documentary so exploitative, which I have seen, is because the filmmaker completely intruded upon the life of this living, being creature and used her for material and a so-called “friendship”, but couldn’t even make the slightest effort to bring her to safety when her life was endangered. Some friend he is.
Did you actually watch the film? The way you're responding doesn't align or make sense about this film .
@@lilbit2870 yeah, I did actually. I also used a direct example of something that happened in the film (the shark attack on the octopus that the narcissistic narrator just watched happen), which leads me to wonder, did you watch the film??
@@champagnesocialist3716 seen it 4 times. And like most nature documentaries. You never interfere with an animal that's hunting for food.. no matter how emotional you feel.. And no you're clearly lying. You haven't actually seen it. But stay mad. The directors success far outweighs your petty opinion.
a very basic documentary about a dude spending way too much time with an octopus exaggerating everything he does with it like he is writing a script for a disney fairy tale & of a premise we have seen a billion times better already in other nature films, tv channels, & yt channels somehow wins the oscar over collective. dick johnson is dead & the dissident somehow not there either. jfc
All of the other nominated films deserved it more, specifically Time. Octopus Teacher is so mundane
LOLOLOL AWFUL WINNER
