    Just a tip Max, if you get another flat tyre on the rear and the jack is not working, just put a rock / log under the other tyre and drive up onto it, it will lift the other tyre off the road so you can change it.

    • @MaxandOccy
      @MaxandOccy  2 роки тому +170

      Okay this is wayyyy too simple an answer and how the hell didn’t I think to do this 😅😅😅
      But at the same time the wheel nuts were over tightened (by the mechanic) so I think I actually needed that heavy duty socket wrench to move them.
      I tried for hours (off camera ha) and they wouldn’t budge!

    • @geckopete
      @geckopete 2 роки тому +54

      @@MaxandOccy a 2-3foot long piece of pipe that can fit over your tyre leaver would help with the over tightened nuts.. I had a 4wd and often had the wheel nuts get tight making them a pain to get off.. having a breaker bar to call on ended up being a very useful tool.. mine would also fit over the jack handle so again having that long handle made jacking it up faster and meant i didn't have to get in under the thing to jack it up.

      BAD ADVICE!!! Don't ever do that especially with a heavy weight vehicle and especially on sand/ mud. You're risking your life. Infact mechanics here in Florida refused to lift my van with a jack unless meant for heavyweight because can EASILY slip.

    • @jamesmazurstudios
      @jamesmazurstudios 2 роки тому +37

      @@shac9131 There is a very big difference between city and bush fixes. Rolling the rear inside wheel up onto a sloped rock, maybe 6cm, giving the tire enough clearance to be changed (keeping in mind that there is another tire there on the inside as well) is 100% safe and a great option to change a duel outside tire. The van won't flip and no one will die BUT...and here is the good part, you will be able to change your tire. Experience is everything when driving in remote locations. And yes, always carry a 3ft metal pipe tucked away somewhere in the van to use as a leverage tool.

    Max, thank you for the major amount of ❤️Occy cam❤️.
    Y’know, this is how most Americans picture Australia. Well that, and surfing. And Chris Hemsworth. Plus a bonkers number of killer bugs, animals and reptiles everywhere that Australians don’t seem to mind.

    Hey Max. A good lesson. When you take your van to a mechanic most will use a rattle gun that is far too strong for the wheel nuts. Before leaving the shop have them back off each nut then tighten each by hand. Simple yet functional.

    Max I'm glad you appreciated my comment on your last posted video. Well deserved, truly. I've followed your posts since the beginning and your travels have blessed you in multiple ways: you've become a master story teller/filmmaker; you've found and faced your demons; Lots of us make the mistake of seeing 'problems' as obstacles to security. When in fact, these challenges are a key part of this exhilarating, lovely, heartbreaking and amazing adventure. I like to think that before we were born, as soul tourists in this galaxy, we each chose our life, our adventure journey. And so, we are marvelous works in progress, as our adventures here, call out our best and bravest selves.

Because the heat he is troubled by comes from his feet and mouth, a dog does not sweat, all he needs is a (slow) cool down in a river, the sea or whatever cool water place. Not uncommon for mechanics to use Geman spec torque setting when mounting wheels; gutentight. I quickly learned solo treking up north QLD that swapping the tire iron for a breaker bar (with water pipe extension) and socket was a must if I wanted to preserve my pleasant disposition. John P. is absolutely spot on with the alternate jacking method on a dually. Surprised you only have 1 spare up there. Those roads are brutal on tyres. As I am sure you are seeing, all the hard travels are totally worth it for the serenity and beauty of our fine land.

    Had to smile at the Aboriginal "Shoot Out at the O.K. Corral" music just after the 2 minute point. Even better than that was the "This is another fine mess you've gotten us into Ollie" look Occy gives you as you calmly deal with the tire. That dog is smart!! The musical artist just after the 10-minute point sounds like your friends Avian Blu. I saved their song "Cabin in the Woods" to my playlist -- so good! I cracked up when the rough road mess seemed more of a hassle than the flat tire. Next time I have my patience tested, I'm going to remember to "Stay Calm and Carry On." Thanks for the inspiration ... as usual. 😊

    Hey Max,
    Great video mate! Views were amazing! Shame about that tyre you was lucky someone came along. For future you should either carry a small ramp (or find something you can drive the inner other wheel up onto) just enough to get the flat one off the ground then you can change it even if you don't have a working jack! It wouldn't even need to be anything high just an inch or two extra so something lying around could do it rock or log, under the one next to the flat, just enough to clear the ground and get it off and get the new one on there. Not sure the torque settings but usually something like 120nm to 150nm I think off top of my head for lug nuts and bolts it'll be in the manual or online. Torque em up mate and carry a breaker bar! (You never know when you'll need it..)
    Good going on the push up challenge great cause and glad you're still raising awareness!
    Look forward to the next video!

    Max, thank you for this awesome video! Trials and tribulations go along with anything worthwhile. Like you said, it’s all a learning experience. I’m thankful for people who care enough to stop and help someone on the side of the road. And I hope when you’re in Alice Springs you can pick up another spare tire. Thanks for the beautiful scenery and visiting with you and Occy. Take care, stay safe.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It is always great to see you & Occy. However, in the midst of adversity I admire your new way of handling situations as they present them self. Having said that, it could be that the "better-health" is truly helping, but whatever the case maybe you don't give up, and that is to be commended. I know there are times when we all want to say the hell with it, but as we stand back & take a minute to reflect on things, the solution becomes clearer. My favorite part of the video, was hearing your laughter when you and your buddies were playing monopoly. Give a big hug to Occy, Stay Safe & Healthy... Abrazos

    Max do you have blocks/levelling ramps in your kit at all? You potentially could have driven the inner wheel up onto a block to raise the outer one up to change it instead of using a jack. Also sounds like a long bar that can give added leverage for removing nuts would be worth having in the van somewhere (power tools can just strip the thread)
    Your vlogs make me miss Aus even more (only been once but best mate moved to Melbourne) I will get back there one day

      @@MaxandOccy no problem it's easy for us to see solutions when not in the situation so as long as you got sorted. A long piece of pipe (3ft+ or as long as you can stow potentially) that will fit over your wrench handle will be enough to give extra leverage, it doesn't need to be anything fancy or complicated x

    Get out there and kick up the dust. " a tidy van/house, is the sign of a wasted life"...Experiencing a mishaps, provides an opportunity for someone to show how kind they are in coming to your aid....witness the kindness in people, it's humbling .

    The jack reached its maximum lift height of the cylinder which is why it wouldn't pump anymore. Most bottle jacks have a screw top (the black part on top of the cylinder) which extends the lift height. If that isn't high enough put some timber between the jack and axle, wooden guide posts work well (if you can find one). A small car stand under the socket extension to support it helps when getting wheel nuts off if they are tight, especially when using some pipe for extra leverage. Really enjoying your travels, can't wait for the next update 😁

    I believe that in here in Australia it's a rule for tyre shops to only tighten wheel nuts to 80psi by hand with a tension wrench.

    There's a product here in Canada called Never Seez that's great on the lug bolts to keep them from seizing especially in dry and dusty climates. Maybe there is a similar product there, it's a really good idea to use in a lot of places to make doing your own repairs a lot easier when specialty tools are accessible.
