How to overcome driving anxiety

  • You have passed your driving test and lost your confidence, that is what we are going to cover in todays video. Most new drivers who have passed their driving test will get their first car and drive off into the sunset and have very little problems with driving their first car.
But a small minority will suffer with their confidence when adapting to drive their own car. Usually the main problem is stalling when moving off at lights, stalling when moving off at roundabouts and stalling in busy traffic and hill starts.
So the key to building your confidence up and stopping that driving anxiety is practice clutch control in the quiet areas where you live. Understanding that your muscle memory is set for your driving instructors car and not your first car. It will take a lot of practice and patience when retraining your feet to adjust to driving your first car. But when you start to see the results your driving anxiety will decrease and your driving confidence will increase.

I spent my first drive alone being followed by my mum because I was so scared. But now I’m off and about whenever I can be. However I still sometimes say out loud to myself “God James would be so disappointed with how I just did that” 😂

I passed my test when I was forty, and a few weeks after that (before I'd had a chance to buy a car) my dad died and my mum almost died. So I put the driving on hold as I just wasn't in a safe place mentally to be driving. It took six years before I bought a car, and that was purely because my mum had become disabled and we'd got to the point where I had to buy a car to drive her to her medical appointments. I spent ages researching cars and ended up buying one quite randomly - I went for a walk to buy a Belgian bun and next-door to the bakery was a car showroom, and the salesman showed me the only car they had in my price range and I thought "I could actually drive this". My mum had suggested I buy an automatic to make it easier which I love. Because I'd forgotten what to do I watched as many of your videos as I could, and that's given me the ability to drive. I still get very anxious, it's been two years, but because of your multi-storey car park video I can now park at the hospital in their complicated car park. Mum says she now can just enjoy the ride and is no longer pressing an imaginary brake with her foot. She was evacuated to Bletchley in the war, so we enjoy watching your videos. Thank you!

I passed my test late September last year. My instructor car had all the mod cons. Reverse camera, hill start assist, electric hand brake.
My car I bought is a Ford Focus MK2 2011 . It has been so hard getting used to my car my confidence really suffered. But I force myself out in it every day and I'm slowly getting used to it.
I struggle like hell to park it.
My confidence is shot in busy car parks. I hate it. But I have to keep trying.
    Thanks for your videos.

Great advice, I am a new driver but feel my confidence just grew straight away after passing, lucky, but I know a good few people that have lost confidence after passing, is more common than you think.
Love the advice, love the vids, watched all way through and stuck a like, hopefully help get the vid out to more people.

I passed last year and went from instructors diesel Corsa to a 14 year old Golf plus petrol, really struggled at first but a friends husband took me driving and he use to be an instructor so got me back to basics on clutch control, really helped. All my issues were related to gears and clutch so after burning one clutch out I decided automatic might suit better (I also have fibromyalgia so manual hurts my left shoulder) I had one lesson with an automatic instructor which boosted confidence to do test drives, just picked up my Hyundi i10 and love it, can now build my confidence back again.

It feels like I've learnt again from beginning. I learnt in a Merc Benz A Class, with a high clutch/ bite and parking assistance display.
I got a Ford Fiesta Ztec, 1.25, which is a lovely car, but so different. No mod cons, the clutch/ bite is lower and it took forever to get used to the gears. I passed in October I'm only now building confidence to go out on errands during weekend traffic after months of isolated night time/ early morning drives.
Still getting used to uphill starts and need to stop over reving at the uphill starts.
But I love driving and slowly building confidence.

Thank you for this video! I lost my confidence after passing and didn't drive for over a year. Shouldve stuck to it and done what you say in the video. Take small steps to get to know the new car. I thought there were something wrong with me and I just wasn't meant to drive.

    Hey,
I share a car with my partner and I lose confidence when they are in the car 😤😂
I prefer to drive on my own.
Which is bizarre as I was very fortunate that she took me out as a learner. Which if anyone is in the position to do this, I highly recommend. Not to pass quicker but it helps build your experience and independence on the road. My instructor had a Nissan note and I now drive a 2019 plate Nissan Micra. It wasn’t planned that way though.
It’s almost a year since my test and I’m feeling a little better. I have to remind her, I passed on my own without her “advice” 😂
    Xx

Learned in a focus st line and loved it. Passed my test and had to drive my partners Vauxhall crossland for a few days while my new car was being serviced and MOT’d and really struggled with it. Hated everything about it. Knocked my confidence quite badly. Got my new car which is a ford fiesta and it’s a very similar drive to the st line as everything is in the same place and familiar and confidence came back instantly. Test drive a new car before you buy and find what feels right for you.

I passed March last year and only got my car 3 weeks ago. Had to drive back from dealership on dual carriageways. Surprisingly no issues but I have zero confidence to get on a dual carriageway again. Sticking to local roads so far 😟 I think it's the changing lanes that's putting me off. Judging when it's safe to do so

My learner car was a little Toyota Yaris hatchback. Then my instructor got a new car, a Toyota Yaris cross (hybrid compact SUV) which I drove for a few months and passed my test in.
I knew I always wanted a bigger car, I’m tall and have two dogs so need the room… I settled on a Peugeot 3008 (crossover SUV) the size I adapted to fairly quickly, but what I found was I only needed the lightest touch on the accelerator and the power was there… I can also reverse just using the brake to control the speed, rather than having to accelerate first and then use the brake.
I’ve only been driving a couple of months since passing, I always feel nervous before I get in the car, I think I just overthink and assume the worst. Once I’m actually in the drivers seat and set off, I’m fine 😂 I just need to remember that I passed the test for a reason. And I do like to think I’m a safe and considerate driver.

I had a really bad lesson before my test. Try not to dwell on it. Go over your mistakes learn from them. Ask yourself how can I do that better. Its one bad lesdon. I did my test and passed. As I watched the videos. Stop & pause on manovers do observations but in your head think of the next step. It really pays off. I kept saying why I was doing things it was hard to do but calmed me. All the best, good luck.
