    Just an idea Trav: I think it would be really beneficial for you to put the gear you’re currently in on the screen (for example if you’ve just changed to 3rd, put a 3 in the top left) just so that other learners and myself can get a rough idea of what gear needs to be chosen when and what time. Cheers mate keep up these 10/10 videos! 🙏

    So you come off the gas for 2nd and onwards?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  9 місяців тому

      When going up gears I come off the gas to change gear and then back on the gas to increase speed for the new gear.

    You're approaching a roundabout and the pupil asks "Which gear?" There's no time to ask them which gear they think they should choose. You suggest 2nd gear based on their current speed and the situation ahead being clear. You say 2nd because they're doing 15mph and you allow for a bit of reaction time, but they continue braking and slow down to 4mph, stick the car into 2nd, lift the clutch and struggle to get away.
    It's great that with years of driving experience we can usually guess which gear we need to select while approaching most roundabouts. Our experience helps us predict the speed we will need to be moving at when we join a roundabout and therefore which gear to change to. For drivers with less experience it might be more reliable to choose their gear at the point they make their decision and take their foot off the brake to keep moving, or drop all the way down to first whenever they slow down to a walking pace or need to wait. When we can't decide if it's safe to join a roundabout we keep braking. When we decide to go, we take our foot off the brake. Whatever speed we're at when we take our foot off the brake determines the gear we choose. No guessing.

    If you are on a hill say into a roundabout and have to wait in traffic you have a choice hold the brake pedal or use the handbrake. I prefer the handbrake as feet are ready to accelerate plus I can have a look around to see what's happening without worrying about holding the brake pedal

      Yes I would use handbrake

      @@JamesTravis I don't get it. so when you are heading towards red traffic lights, you press the break and then the clutch and the car stops. on the roundabout you did the same: break, clutch but the car continued running

      @aidavicente2862 Brakes is not just to stop the car. Depends on how strong you applied the brakes for the intention to stop or just to slow down. Your decision, your control. So whatever applies to your situation.
