For anyone confused about sapphos sexuality: Sappho being in love with phaon was likely a joke made by other poets/writers of the era, representing the story of Aphrodite chasing the sun god on his chariot into the sea. Since sappho wrote a lot about Aphrodite, this makes sense. Also, sappho used gender neutral or feminine terms to describe the people she was in love with in her poems. The gender neutral terms could have been to disguise her love for women, or to describe men. No one really knows since translators who don't want her to be gay have changed the wording in English. Running a girls' school thing was also an educated guess, actually a 19th-century theory to whitewash Sappho as a non-lesbian. According to that, her songs about missing girls were about missing the graduates in whom she had mostly pedagogical interest and she had a habit of writing epithalamions (wedding songs) as parting gifts because the school was supposed to prepare girls for marital life. "Like what kind of parent would send their child to such a shady person?" However, I kinda remember speculations that the school was supposed to teach how to please men in bed too or that there were songs to wake up the students' sensuality or sth. Of course, as she was a creative person, the speculation that she had a few students/protegées is not far-fetched at all. The most fun fake fact of ancient origin is that Sappho was married to a man called Kerlylas of Andros (basically Dick from the Isle of Man). I personally think she was bisexual in practice because that was the nature of the ancient world and she was a noblewoman (because she was educated and into arete in her songs).

This was a very cool watch, thank you! Since we're sharing reincarnation stories, I had a dream once that I was a man who wore suspenders and played fiddle at barn dances in a past life.
when you said "it was a way for them to feel at home in a world that wanted to deny them their existence", i LITERALLY got choked up. That line slapped me in the face.
This was a WILD ride of a story. Thanks for creating such well-researched and thorough videos. I'm a theatre historian and really appreciate what you do!
I'm a Vedic shaman, and there's common trends to reincarnation that doesn't support this claim but they might have used the wrong term. I suspect that Juanita could possibly be a medium who channeled the Sappho escort and not the poet. In her mother's "Flapper" rant, she may have been commenting on Juanita channeling the wrong Sappho, hence the exorcism comment. As channeling is akin to puppetry, promoting Juanita as a medium when the parents were already a dynamic duo wouldn't turn as many heads compared to the steady income as a writer. More importantly, from what I've experienced Spirits tends to reincarnate within the same bloodline they once came from (if they really like their family). Also picking the same bloodline is like autofill when putting in the address. Most spirits will be drawn to those they resonate with, so friends can become family in one life. There's a case of twins who passed tragically and the mother giving birth to a second set of twins who behaved like their passed sisters. Shanti Devi is the most well known studied case of reincarnation. The whole point of reincarnation is to give solace that we can choose to spin the wheel again. (And hopefully the gods can fix this late stage capitalism shenaniganery)
@@tanjahorvatserbiaoldslavsh4685 The biggest breadcrumb that the mother knew her daughter was channeling a spirit is the "flapper" comment as she essentially was demanding her daughter channel the correct Sappho however if the household was homophobic the true spirit of Sappho couldn't even be invited into that house by most mediums. I just feel so bad for this girl who was abused like most child entertainers and forced to lose her childhood for the financial well-being of the family. Medium or not, it's a shitty thing to do to a child.
It doesn't make sense that spirits would reincarnate into the same bloodline. Maybe if the soul is trapped in a cycle of karma that requires them to confront personal bias and a system of oppression, then I could see that. I believe our souls chose lives that will benefit their spiritual development the best. Often times that means expanding far beyond what the previous life knew. Reincarnation into the same bloodline seems kind of classist, as many families get stuck at the same economic class for centuries even. To make things worse people try to justify that these families deserve to stay poor because of some nonsense excuse or another. To say spirits return to the same bloodline implies that one's spirit is trapped in the same economic class, which just doesn't make sense. Putting rules on reincarnation is really silly. Who are we to decide how our spirits reincarnate? This seems like a human construct like gender or class, as we likely can't understand the majority of the spiritual realm from the limits of human experience. Wouldn't it make more sense for our souls to roam and see all aspects of humanity instead of being more or less bound to the same bloodline? And who is to say that we must always reincarnate as humans, or even life on this planet? That just doesn't add up. This isn't even to mention all of the bloodlines that ended due to the decimation of populations, be it colonization or otherwise. It doesn't account for people who decide to not have or cannot have children. That would be many millions, if not billions, of spirits displaced.

There are a lot of stories all around the world like this. Kids being barely able to talk, but knowing really specific details of their “past lives”. Sometimes leading parents and authorities to their old family members, their murderers, and sometimes dead bodies. Its absolutely insane there’s a lot of books about it
The Phaon thing made me pull out my copy of Sappho and the most I could find about men in general were a handful of poems about the trojan war and male gods there were 2 poems I found that mention attraction towards men both of which were from her earlier work and the latest of the poems (that she herself wrote) I could find was about the beauty of the sun. I also found Ovids little mistake in the section labeled "wrongly attributed to Sappho". "May you sleep on your tender girlfriend's breasts"- Sappho
The thing I never got about reincarnation is why do people identify as the most famous ‘past life’? Why does she identify as Sappho and not Juanita, or Mary the store Klerk in some supermarket. Along with that, how does time work; is it instant or is there a potential limbo where you wait, is time linear and only goes one way. Where did all the souls come from? Is there a long line like the DMV for people awaiting access to the physical world?
I'm patiently waiting for when you blow up. You deserve it so much!! This video is amazing and so well-made, you're such a great story teller. Keep doing these videos, you're amazing!!

History: everything and everyone was super cis. Super super cis.
super sus
Straight as this line ~~~~~~~~~~
Didn't you know that gays and trans were invented in 1960s by communist Jews to further push leftist-feminist propaganda in order to oppress heterosexual white males and strip them off their masculinity? Silly you, of course before that everyone in history was cis and straight.
Sarcasm by the way (just in case anyone gets confused)
What I first imagined was "You see, I don't waaaaant to be a lesbian, I am forced by the spirit of Sappho, oh well, too late to be born yet again"
Getting engaged on the spot? Come on.
If the real Sappho saw a boy she loved from afar, she would have wrote a whole poem about how she was about to die.
Juanita was a very talented writer. Juanita's mother claimed that Juanita was the reincarnation of the Greek goddess to make money on Juanita as a circus attraction.

I’m so glad I found your channel. I find the way you tell stories so captivating and your voice is so soothing. I’ve watched every one of your videos and always look forward to what you’re gonna make next. Hope you’re having a great day
I’m so glad I found you. I’ve been nonstop telling people about your Bram Stoker video, I had absolutely no idea. I love all your contact and I’m so glad you have a sponsor!!
This feels like one of those bots on ig who write you a dm saying they are some long dead celebrity waiting to come back, except you need to pay huge money to help them
I really appreciate how well the subtitles are done. Not many long videos have complete subtitles this soon!
i honestly saw the thumbnail and thought "jesus, are we still going nuts at every troll post on tumble?" lmfao. it really is eternal
This was a very cool watch, thank you!
Since we're sharing reincarnation stories, I had a dream once that I was a man who wore suspenders and played fiddle at barn dances in a past life.
That sounds awesome!!
These parents would family vloggers today
when you said "it was a way for them to feel at home in a world that wanted to deny them their existence", i LITERALLY got choked up. That line slapped me in the face.
This was a WILD ride of a story. Thanks for creating such well-researched and thorough videos. I'm a theatre historian and really appreciate what you do!
I'm 8 seconds into the video and I just have to comment that your eye makeup looks absolutely stunning!
More importantly, from what I've experienced
Spirits tends to reincarnate within the same bloodline they once came from (if they really like their family).
Interesting
I believe in Spirituality. Your explanation is very interesting.
@@L3onking I agreed with you.
Loved this topic. On a different note: i thought i was listening to one of my ASMRists bc you look vaguely similar to her but i couldn't fall asleep to this bc it was so fasinating.

So glad i found you on here your a breath of fresh air ty!
If I had a past life I was probably a bunch of mushrooms just chilling in the forest. I hope I can return to that when I leave this life.
Aw I was hoping this story would be gayer... but it was still very entertaining! 😄🌈
Haha "gayer" 😄
How can she claim Sappho was straight. She’s literally part of the origin of the words “lesbian” and “Sappho”. Maybe she liked multiple genders, but her poetry implies she certainly liked woman.
that whole story feels like a fan fiction
First of all, this is a really Great video. Just marvellous! But the icing on the cake for me is the apperance of Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Just Last year I wrote my thesis about Cahuns work and I‘m thrilled you mentioned her since she‘s so greatly unknown and underrated.
The image at 10:34 has me DYING, my exact face the whole time you were reading that crazy ass quote
Love all of your videos, and always awaiting for more :)). I’m glad I could make it early today! Thanks for always making thoughtful, thorough, and engaging historical content ❤️
I used to go slumming when i was young and single.
I basically lived in a slum, so every night was slumming for me.
Honestly the best time of my life, wasted.
In a past life, I was that one toad that scared an entire village cuz I was so pissed off that I fell down a well that I screamed and the echo made people think a banshee was in the well lmao
in my past life i was unknown man who died eating library paste
There are a lot of stories all around the world like this. Kids being barely able to talk, but knowing really specific details of their “past lives”. Sometimes leading parents and authorities to their old family members, their murderers, and sometimes dead bodies. Its absolutely insane there’s a lot of books about it
Despite it being untrue i mean, maybe that’s what the family was inspired by
The Phaon thing made me pull out my copy of Sappho and the most I could find about men in general were a handful of poems about the trojan war and male gods there were 2 poems I found that mention attraction towards men both of which were from her earlier work and the latest of the poems (that she herself wrote) I could find was about the beauty of the sun. I also found Ovids little mistake in the section labeled "wrongly attributed to Sappho". "May you sleep on your tender girlfriend's breasts"- Sappho
Robespierre did actually have his last meal in the basement. I would know, I'm his reincarnation.
17:42 me when someone drops an ice cube and left it on the floor and I step on it in my socks:
Dude I love your content it’s just really fascinating and the way you structure everything is super entertaining. I hope you’re doing well!

You are such a good narrator i love your voice!:
The thing I never got about reincarnation is why do people identify as the most famous ‘past life’? Why does she identify as Sappho and not Juanita, or Mary the store Klerk in some supermarket. Along with that, how does time work; is it instant or is there a potential limbo where you wait, is time linear and only goes one way. Where did all the souls come from? Is there a long line like the DMV for people awaiting access to the physical world?
For the attention.
You are so well spoken it was an absolute joy to watch and listen , keep up the great work
Take a shot whenever the cis deny Sappho of her homosexuality and something is defined as “lewd” “disgusting” or “indecent”
Don't do this. You will die. Alcohol poisoning is an asshole like that.

Ahh I’m so happy I found this channel! Your content is so well researched and the stories are always so interesting. Love it ❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, no one claiming to be the reincarnation of some famous person from the ancient world ever seems to be able to write or speak in Greek, Latin, Egyptian, Aramaic, proto-German, etc. I wonder why🙄
i recently found your videos (recently=yesterday) and i’ve since watched every single one😂i love them so much also your hair is amazing 💕thank you for the effort you put into these videos
A very imaginative family.
Thank you for enlightening me. I genuinely enjoy learning more about these often forgotten historical figures.
Realistically, most of our past lives must have been something like:
Died as a baby
Died as a baby
Lived till the age of 7
Died as a baby
Died as a baby
Was a peasant farmer
Died as a baby
Died of TB
Lived a regular life
Now.
I’m gonna make the ultimate power move: I was her in a past life
Who was I in my past life? I'm not even sure who I am in this life. 🤔
Thank you for another snappy, informative and entertaining video.
tbh I had no idea who sappho was in first place *g* I love your storytelling and the interesting choices of topics
Well, then. I’ve learned more of Sappho than what I’ve been told.

I went to a psychic once and she gave me a horrible description of my past life. Apparently I was abandoned by my father, abused by my mother and grew into an angry bitter and lonely old woman.
I need to here more stories about being possessed by a "flappers spirit" .
The brief mention of Claude Cahun made me happy, now there was an interesting life!
I don't even like history that much, but you somehow make it interesting
Same! It's stressing me out!
