Kirkby on Bain - “Church Village on the Straight River”
Hello again folks, time for another trip around an East Lindsey village. Now, before we dive into this one, I hope you’re not watching this episode whilst eating your tea, because this one will likely put you off one particular tinned food for life. Welcome to Kirkby on Bain, a village that sites on a canalised river between Horncastle and Coningsby, and just west of the A153.
Formerly known as Kirkby Super Bain, this one lies within a glacial valley at the confluence of River Bain and Haltham Beck. The Bain was canalised into the Horncastle Canal in the 1790s with the old course now little more than a stream in many places and completely dry in others. Along the valley floor and flood plain the land is largely pastoral farmland used for rearing cattle and sheep, whilst further away from the river, the land is more arable.
One feature which stands out along the river would be an old watermill, a building now lovingly converted into a private house. Kirkby once had a wharf on the Bain too. To the South of the village, sand and gravel were once extracted and now their flooded workings are a haven for wildlife.
Kirkby’s darkest piece of history surrounds a murder, committed using of all things, corned beef. Come with me to learn what happened to both the victim and the perpetrator!
