  • Australian Reptile Park Manager of Life Sciences Hayley Shute says “kangaroos aren’t the fluffy icon of Australia that they’re perceived to be” after a 77-year-old-man dies from a kangaroo attack in Western Australia.
    This is the first kangaroo-caused death since 1936.
    “They’re wild animals and especially male kangaroos, much of their behaviour is about battling one another, trying to get to that alpha position,” Ms Shute told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
    Ms Shute advised people to always keep a safe distance from wild kangaroos.

      I'm South African and we have _all_ the 'wild animal kept as pets' stories - lions, leopards, baboons - oh, and the hippo who bit his 'owner' in half. The baboon, if I recall correctly, took his 'owners' friend's throat out. And the lion had been raised with a bottle. They all had to be destroyed.

    Was it a male kangaroo? Male kangaroos kept as pets can see their owners as members of the mob, as they mature they can challenge their owners for superiority. They do not understand that humans are different, it's important that people realise this, or there can be consequences.

Further, the kangaroo evolved in a very harsh environment and can and will protect themselves and their interests as THEY see them. He kept it as a pet. He was in his late 70s. Unless he just moved to Australia and suddenly decided to have one as a pet, I'm going to guess that he knew what kangaroos are capable of. It is possible the animal just switched or made defensive by something the man did , and killed him. If he was in his 80s, and knew the behaviour of kangaroos isn't is possible he recently received some sort of health news, or had some mental health challenges that made death by kangaroo a more desirable outcome than the alternative? I'm not saying that this is what happened. But just to report that a man died because of a kangaroo leaves out A LOT of information, as well as leaves a lot to the imagination.

    • @mothratemporalradio517

      I left another comment elsewhere commenting on what we don't know. I'm a bit too lazy to write it again, but i agree this raises questions for which the article gives us no answers. Of course i too wonder if he recognised the potential risk and if he thought that it didn't apply to this particular roo for some reason, and if so, why. What i somewhat suspect is that "kept it as a pet" might lead us to think X Y and Z based on dogs, but i remember a woman of about his age telling me that she had a wallaby that would visit her verandah for food. I'm not sure we would say it was a pet; it was free to come and go as it pleased. I am not sure if she hand fed it or kept a respectable distance and so forth. And i do recognise that wallabies don't have the same reputation as some male kangaroos. But, to be perfectly honest, although i grew up on a farm, where it wasn't unusual to encounter certain wild animals, including brown snakes, i really don't remember a) encountering roos in the wild or b) hearing that roos were rough.
      I'm not sure why. I did watch the Leyland Brothers, etc! It's only really from UA-cam clips I watched relatively recently that I realised that some male kangaroos are like rippling with muscle as though they were a beefcake on steroids and possessed of much the same demeanour.
      FWIW there have also been other recent reports of attacks on the east coast, where they certainly weren't being treated as pets or fed, but are said to have kinda descended on the town, where they have been breeding and getting up to mischief - a kangaroo mafia in the suburbs, if you will. Apparently one put an elderly person in hospital - an unprovoked attack, this is probably within the last 8 weeks or so.
      I seem to remember being reasonably shocked at that, so perhaps being Australian isn't enough to be savvy, and we need a petrifying 70s style PSA with lots of Tarantino-esque red paint.
      Seriously though, i feel sad for the elderly man; my guess is that he was isolated and perhaps a little lonely, and for whatever reason, he believed he could trust this particular animal and/or was willing to take a risk. Perhaps he raised it from the time it was a joey, who knows. May he rest in peace. 🙏

      @@mothratemporalradio517 I understand wild animals are potentially dangerous. Bottom line for me in regards to this video is I really want to say it makes me mad that news media is essentially fear mongering by sharing this story with so few details. Yes people need to be aware of the dangers, but I believe there are also people out there now terrified to see a kangaroo at a hefty distance. I find it even more frustrating that I can't say that because I chose to watch the video. Marketers of news media are just so darn crafty at hooking me in to watch their video.

    • @mothratemporalradio517
      @mothratemporalradio517 Рік тому

      @@kristalynncreates appreciate you sharing that with me. If i could try to reassure you, sensation is the bread and butter of tabloids, and i like to think most of us take it with a pinch of salt. Those who don't know how to - admittedly there's a bit of a crossover here with Fox viewers from the US. Interestingly i find that actually a majority of people, even in stories like this, will often defend the nature of the wild animal. I would be surprised if people were terrified of roos after seeing this, but i do think perhaps we should be more cautious than i had expected, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing, maybe a little bit of fear can instill a little bit of respect. A respectful distance seems like the sensible outcome in these kind of situations.
      I understand your temerity about the way of the tabloid. I have a confession here though - admit that i rather enjoy pulling the leg of those Americans half convinced Australia is full of deadly creatures at every turn, and take every opportunity to warn them about the deadly drop bears. :v
      This reminds me I was reading a thing in the Guardian a while back about a new species of spider identified in WA and seem to recall they estimated they have only identified about one third of our spider population! 🕷️🕸️ I don't know how they can know an unknown quantity, if that makes sense (how exactly can you know what you don't know?), but it's still a pretty amazing idea. (I admit this revelation was probably connected to a horrifying photo of a huntsman eating a micro possum in Tassie. I did click on it, despite myself!!!!!) The other thing that gets me about Australian wildlife recently is the unthinkable amount of fauna we have lost in the bushfires. Too mindblowing to think about.
      Oh, and they say they think they can bring the Thylacine back within a decade - but i don't approve of that, even if it is possible, the same with the woolly mammoth! Heaven knows what sort of infernal DNA tampering goes on there. I think there should be public referendums about scientific ethics in respect of such developments. Can't see how it's reasonable to bring back the woolly mammoth even if you can. And for the Thylacine, the eco system would need to be taken into account very seriously, at the minimum. I still don't think we should "play God" in this way, but the quote in the piece i watched said, "we play God all the time". Whatever the case, i think we're at the stage with science and technology that there should be some degree of checks and balances with the community about the ethics in question and whether it's in the interests of the planet to do this and that just because you can.
      But yes, i mean Sky news (which i think we're on, can't see right now) is always going to focus on hooks to lure us in. And it works, sometimes. I understand how you feel as at times Sky has been responsible for spreading around significant misinformation which i won't even go into. It's Murdoch media. I still watch it from time to time, but i try not to take its overtones too seriously, and think about any context that is missing, especially where this would result in polarised responses. So although i don't feel like this will be bad press for all roos, since few would have one as a "pet", i totally get where you're coming from in terms of the way things are presented and on particular the potential ramifications when people can't take things with a pinch of salt. Plus an Australian dominated viewership is by no means guaranteed - which has been somewhat eye opening at times when the content is on Australian issues.
      Thanks for your thoughts and input, and wishing you all the best! Hopefully the roos will be okay. I think they were saying there hasn't been a documented death since the 1930s, so that helps put things in perspective. Cheers! 🐨

    They're no joke, I had a really scary close call lately. I ride Racehorses for a living out in Rural Australia, on the track there's always Roos around, mostly females which are dangerous enough because when they cross the track in front of you, the 2 year old young horses shit themselves and can dead stop or whip. It just so happened 2 weeks ago I was riding a horse for the first time on her own, and who came out of the bush to my right other than the HUGE 6ft tall male roo with a scar down his shoulder, it was so quick in my memory it was only a few frames, I'd only seen the faintest outline of his shape in the tall shrub grass, but that was enough for Annie to react like a bullet, but my horse went from a gallop to doing a 180 in a fraction of a second, and the momentum sent me flying, RIGHT into the kangaroo crossing the track in front of me, he spooked and stepped back/forward as if to lunge and attack at me, but as I stood up and stumbled backwards trying to process what had even happened he ran back into the bush, my horse was already galloping full tilt home. If he had wanted to, he could have killed me right there and then before my coworkers and boss could come to rescue me with the buggy.
    I'll never forget seeing those claws up close, those things could gut you so fast, God do they deserve respect.

      So do we in Australia mate .You must have a Licence for appropriate weapon , Stored and secured in appropriate manner . Very little difference between America and Australia with gun laws . I own property and dont allow gunfire because it disturbs wildlife and i enjoy bird songs and Kangaroos feeding close by . But mate , these are wild animals and should be allowed freedom . I own 3 guns , high calibre 7.62x54 Mosin Nagants and only fire at rifle range . But of course ,if i or person was in danger ,thats different , aye .

    We must put our faith in Jesus before it's too late. Each day we draw closer to our eternal destiny and we see the world has become a very uncertain place. And what we believe about Jesus Christ will determine where we spend forever. It is an extremely urgent matter because we cannot be sure we will be alive tomorrow. Jesus said you are saved by grace through faith. And faith comes by hearing a message concerning Christ. Jesus said if you continue in my word then you are my disciples. We see how the Jews crucified Jesus, they did not believe he was the Messiah in fact they accused him of being a blasphemer bc he claimed to be from God. And he healed on the Sabbath day which they considered a violation of scripture. They were blinded from the truth by their sinful ways. People were so blinded during the ministry of Jesus that he left a man dead for four days, then brought him back from the dead just to try to convince all his nay sayers that he was the son of God. Has the world blinded your eyes and alienated you from the life of God? Jesus said many are going to think they are on their way to Heaven only to find themselves in Hell. Jesus said there is a narrow way that leads to life that FEW find. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Is your faith superficial? Jesus said whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. And if you can confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you shall be saved. Sometimes it takes a little desperation like we heard King David have pleading to God create in me a clean heart and renew a right sprit within me oh God Purge me with hyssop so I might be clean wash me so I may be whiter than snow. We must have a life saving type of faith. We see in the bible even the devils believe there is one God and tremble. And we see in the New Testament Jesus did not commit himself to everyone who believed in his miracles, because he knew all men. And had no need for anyone to tell him about man he knew what was in man. He knew their belief was superficial. So the idea it only takes believing to go to Heaven is not so. In the book of James it clearly shows faith without works is dead. Through our faith and works we are justified. Every man is appointed once to die and then the judgement. Come all the way to Christ by faith, repent and be saved. Before it's too late...
    Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
    2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
    3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him
    And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof...
