In my opinion, the first version looks more realistic but the new version is more creatively expressive with style and color. The first version is much more monochrome in comparison and very yellow.
The realism might just be due to it being closer to the photograph and having been traced versus hand-drawn. I'm not saying the new version isn't drawn well, just that the hand-drawn one is ever so slightly more stylized to be appealing like the muzzle being closer to the viewer and bigger eyes, even if those differences are only by 1%.
Both of them turned out perfectly! I do enjoy the first version a tiny bit more, but that's because of my preference--I enjoy paintings the more they're mistaken for photos, but expression is just as valuable if not moreso than realism.

Fabriano used to use a animal gelatin based sizing. The newer papers are now made with an all plant-based sizing.

Yes, now vegan paper! I'm glad the art supply industry seems to be trending that way. :)

I have my photos stolen all the time so took down my webpage and I stopped posting new ones anywhere, although I have left the old ones up because they have been thieved by so many artists and businesses they are now worthless. All my years of hard work, time and money down the tubes! Never ever use any part of a photo for reference unless you have contacted the photographer first asking for written permission. I began photography to have my own reference photos because I knew that it's against the law to use a picture as they are copyrighted! Emily, you know better than to steal work without asking, but to encourage your fans to do so also is unconscionable.

I’m really sorry to hear that! I used to sell digital prints on my Etsy store but encountered theft as well so I removed that option. I hope this did not come across as “encouraging” viewers to steal photos! Certainly I would never promote that! But I have heard different opinions about how you can change things and make your art different from the photo. Tbh this was one reason I hesitated to repaint this one, but I’ve just had so many requests for it. Thanks for your insightful comment.

@@EmilyOlsonArt Dear Emily, thank you for your kind and thoughtful response. I for one am very generous when contacted by anyone asking to use one of my photos for educational or amateur personal use. When someone is polite enough to contact me for these reasons I write up a contract stating that they have my limited copyright permission to use my image and specify use, and I don't charge a cent in exchange for a photo of their finished project. Almost nothing brings me more joy than to see interpretations of my photographs around the world and I'm sure that you 100% relate! Thankfully, there are a lot of honest artists out there, particularly the big-time ones who must submit a written contract with any photographer they used a reference photo for when they submit their application to enter a professional level show. Major publications also contact me before use. As you know photography is a form of art, and it hurts a little when someone uses your art and doesn't even give you any credit for your blood sweat and tears.

It would actually be better to mention the many places you can get copyright free images to use for reference photos, like Pixabay, Unsplash and loads of Facebook groups set up for just that reason. Please never encourage people to use photos found randomly on Pinintrest or Google.
