- With jazz a great influence in Haley's musical background, performing a duet with Tony Bennett was a perfect match.
"Steppin' Out With My Baby" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin and introduced in the 1948 musical film Easter Parade. There it was sung by Fred Astaire as part of a dance number involving Astaire on stairs and three different dance partners.
Since then the song has been recorded and performed by several artists, most notably Tony Bennett, in whose treatment it has become a jazz standard. Introduced as the title song on his 1993 Astaire-themed album Steppin' Out, a stylish music video for it garnered some MTV airplay and was part of Bennett's commercial resurgence at the time. In concert Bennett often turns the song into an instrumental showcase for his band and for his own jazz-influenced singing style, varying the dynamic between the soft, semi-scat patter and a loud, soaring finish. One such performance was included on his high-selling 1994 MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett album. Later Bennett recorded it as a bonus tracks duets with Michael Bublé and Delta Goodrem for his 2006 Duets: An American Classic album, performed it on Saturday Night Live with Christina Aguilera, and again performed it with Aguilera at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2007.

I still remember how much I liked this when I first saw it. After weeks of harsh judging, Haley was finally able to just relax and enjoy the moment.
What Haley brings to this performance is an appreciation of the genre in general and of this jazz standard, in particular. She sings it with joy and ease, style, class and a connection to both the song and her duet partner. Just as she did with Moanin'.

As for Haley, she did inspire me to spend several days creating her "samplers" videos, to showcase her diverse talents. Not only her vocal skills, but pay attention to all her subtle movements (i.e. hand jestures, eye movements, etc).

@isabelovemusic Christina sang with a clear voice and didn't overdo the trilling so much (which I view as a problem in most of her performances). But Christina has no feel for this song and doesn't mesh with Tony. Haley sings this song naturally and effortlessly likes she been singing with TB for years. And the song doesn't need the big production with all the dancers or whatever they are as with the CA verson.

@isabelovemusic Christina did this with Tony Bennett several times, including at the Grammys, etc. However, it was always a focus on Christina - her lounging and standing on the piano and all the smoke and dancers to glam up the performance. There was no real gelling with Tony - even the kiss on the cheek at the end were so stiff. You are a Christina fan and that's rather obvious. You are most entitled to your opinion and we have ours. : )
@Gleek1able Christina does have a jazzy voice, she's actually widely recognized as a blue eyed soul. I notice many people here bash Christina because some crazy Christina's stan said something offensive either to Tony or Haley. I'm a Christina fan and Haley is my latest musical idol, it's kinda irritating to see you guys bashing other artists because of what their fans have said. You don't have to be mean to Christina, she didn't try to outsing Tony, that was just your assumption.

It's not about the quality of Christina's voice which is superb here, and that I admire very much. It's what she does with it. There are very ornate runs and variations on melody, often overdone. They have the Soul, or even Gospel, vibe. It just doesna feel like a Jazz performance, and that Jazz just isna her field. There are also some other big name singers that Tony duets with who, good though they are, don't have the Jazz vibe. However, Haley has it in abundance.
Do you by chance have the finale group song with Haley. I'd love to see it if you do.

@izik303 First learn to spell, next recognize that "old man" is a legend, a lot more so than Christina will ever be. This Haley chick, besides being a real unique and talented singer, was brought up right and has respect for Tony to not try to overshadow him - danced with him and had real chemistry. Christina did everything to draw attention to herself (standing on the piano, jeez!!), forgetting that she was doing a duet with a legend. You have had you say here, go back to Christina's videos.

When you compare Haley and Christina, Christina is so effortless and makes a wonderful sound but Haley tries hard, as you can see from her actions, and can't seem to sing some parts like Christina. Christina does not oversing; that's her style. it sounds like she oversings because Tony's voice isn't loud enough. Christina makes this song more joyful but Haley sings it boring

You're right in saying that Christina's singing is effortless. Her voice is superb here. However, my reaction is different to yours. It wasn't Jazz that Christina was singing. It was very florid at times with some very fancy runs that I felt were often very overdone. It was more like Soul, which is Christina's groove, or even Gospel, not Jazz.
I don't understand what made you think that Haley "tries hard". I felt she was restraining herself, particularly at the end when she was harmonising below Tony instead of riding up above him to climax the song. (Her Idol performances show how superb she is at doing that.) It's as if she were giving him the limelight because he was the guest. For her Jazz credentials just listen to her fabulous Idol performance of Moanin in a duet with Casey Abrams. There are also some YT clips of her singing with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, the No Vacancy Orchestra, and with Jeff Goldblum and his Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.
