What is Gel Fuel you ask. Gel fuel is an environmentally friendly alcohol based gel and does not put out by products like wood, paper and other materials do when they burn. It burns with such little put off that you do not have to have a venting system and air quality within the room remains safe. The only thing left behind after burning gel fuels is the can which can be recycled. If you love the ambiance of a dancing flame but hate the work of a real wood fire then gel fuel would be a great option for you.

Now if only I could find a few gel burning fireplaces for sale, they seem to have dried up ... ....

Amazon has a decent 19" bio-ethanol reservoir on sale, bit more dangerous than the gel, but looks nice. I got one, as per park reg's, can't have wood burning anything here, just fuel based burners. I took out the reservoir and placed a gel can into the spill basin and it looks just as good and with certain gel fuels, has the wood burning pop and crackle noise. But yeah, the ethanol burners are unsafe, the snuff plate on mine warped from the heat and wouldn't put out the flame completely, the flame itself was safe, but had to wait for the fuel to run its course and go out on its own. Safe enough to keep using, just with less fluid. Looks more like a fireplace now since I mason'd thin red bricks to the painted steel inner sides. Good luck on your search.

Gregory I totally agree I wish they would bring back the gel fireplaces!!! I have a beautiful oak one with marble around the box where the gel goes and I LOVE it! I bought it years ago from the original Real Flame company and I miss them and I have a hard time finding the gel now 😔 and I just used my last two cans days ago and were supposed to get a mixture of rain/snow in next day or so in NM and I would love to have the opportunity to get another fireplace and the gel easier and cheaper.
They definitely help with the warmth of the house and the sound and ambiance is wonderful.
I wish you the best finding one 🙏.

Lots of great information, thank you. I am going to set up a small wood burning camping tent heater/stove but going to use small ceramic logs inside and over the fire gel. My question is, can you mix small amounts of scented essential oils, such as a pine, to give off an outdoorsy aroma and cover up any slight odors? I have mixed scented oils with paraffin lamp oils before, without any problems. Would the added oil affect the length of heating or cause a soot if mixed? Not so much concerned with the color or height of the flame. Wonder if anyone has attempted this before.

Can I surround the tin with regular wood logs for decorative purposes?

They are special logs that you can use. I don't know or think that natural wood will be safe.

I have the same question, but she says it can be used indoors with no ventilation. So, I guess you don't.
