I think Taft was even worse, he told southern leaders he wouldn’t appoint black people to govt posts in the South if it offended them. Which basically meant that no black people got govt appointments in the south.
And don’t get me started on Wilson.

You are correct about Taft. He had promised on the campaign trail that he would appoint Blacks to gov't. office. That is why Teddy Roosevelt endorsed him. Teddy was appalled when he turned his back on his promise.

By the standards of the time he was a Progressive he was accused by his enemies of being a socialist

@@somethingsomething9008 I've never heard Teddy being called a Socialist. I can understand why they would try & label him in that manner. He worked for the 'little-guy', up against the Big Companies of their time. Teddy was the first to bring about Labor Laws, and Anti-Trust Laws. Made the Big CEO's so mad they tried to get him out of office. As the term 'Progressive' would have meant during the day, was coined from the Scottish Universities, that were tops in Math & Science. Those graduates were called Progressives. Especially, for going against the Catholic Church. Meaning: Forward Thinking. Later we see President Woodrow Wilson use the same term. Of course he hated the United States Constitution and was a racist. Teddy, was big into bringing Blacks into Government Positions. The Democrats hated that. As soon as Taft got into office, he removed them. This pissed Teddy off. He'd thought he & Taft were like minded. Turned out he was more like a Democrat.

The 'apology that never happened', was over a dispute at the Southern Border. Black Troops that served with Teddy were stationed down at Laredo, TX. The towns people, said they'd come into town and caused fights. Their commanding officer, who was white, said the men were all at Camp. Teddy, moved the Company of men. Booker T. told him not to do it. That it could cause harsh feelings. It did. And Northern Blacks, voted for KKK member's after that. Only Northern Blacks could vote b/c of Democrat's, Jim Crow Laws, in the South. Racism became worse & worse. Along with hangings. But Blacks have continued to vote in KKK members. Even Joe Biden has his racist past.
