Meet The Last Artisans Making Traditional Bagpipes By Hand In Scotland's Capital | Still Standing
I am extremely disappointed that bagpipe music isn't the background music for this video.
I bag your comment ✌
I agree
I agree, that blows!
the kiltmaker, helping another craftsman... man that's what we all wanna see
I didn't get what exactly he did though?
@@Wolfhound_81 he funded the shop so it could keep its doors open. Or atleast that's what i was able to catch😅
which is smart of him, not only he successfully help a fellow craftsman he also made two these two shops become an attraction which wouldn't have worked as well if he's the only one on that street
I'd like to know what the first person who ever made a bagpipe was smoking to come up with it.
😂😂
@King Croc hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahhahahhahahahhahaahahahahhaha
me too)
I'd like to know what the first person to decide to light something on fire and suck the smoke in was smoking...
Probably a result of first haggis
I played in an all girls Pipe Band in Canada. One of the founders was an aunt, in 1940's
I still have my Lawrie pipes with Ivory trim and a MacGregor Tartan cover on my bag. My bag is leather. They are terrible to keep supple and seasoned. Best time of my life on parade, especially playing in a mass band with all the bands from a Highland games
What was the name of the all-girls band?
Jenna Bagpipes it was the Georgetown Girls Pipe Band from Georgetown Ontario Canada.
As a Scotsman, of course I love the bagpipes. BUT! One bagpipe playing is just torture. There needs to be an army of pipers to play at the same time to really feel the power they wield.
The one playing at Prince Phillip's funeral was haunting.
For some reason I read this with a Scottish accent
one pipe is not torture if its someone like Stuart Liddell, Jack Lee, Bruce Gandy, Finlay Johnston, Callum Beaumont, Roddy MacLeod, Angus MacColl, Iain Speirs, Willie McCallum, Connor Sinclair. most of the world think this way as well because they heard "a piper" or someone who is learning the pipes but not quite yet "a Piper"
hey ,my friend can you tell me some places worth visiting in Scotland. i want to see Scotland and Switzerland when I will have enough money
@@kunaljha5432 the two biggest cities Edinburgh and Glasgow are popular, there's some other cool places in the central belt, such as the firth of forth, if you go up further north there's lovely scenic areas like Glencoe and lots of wee islands, depends how far you travel. I think everyone goes to Loch Ness because of the "monster" but there's other lovely lochs and rivers :)
He should have a UA-cam channel. Lots of people would love to watch him do his craft!!
a lot of people suggest start a youtube channel to make that youtube/paetron money but what you gotta understand, is learning how to film yourself takes talent itself. I tried filming myself drawing to see if I could make some speed drawing videos, and just to get the right camera angle, good lighting and what not, takes a lot of time if you don't know what your doing. Then that's just the fliming part, the process of uploading, the process of editing, is a whole other craft. and Until you get enough money for a editor, you have to do it all yourself.
yes!!!
The sound of the highland bagpipes are bloody noisy though
It's always lovely to see how people care for their traditions
Last used in World War 2? The 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders used Bagpipes during the Battle of the Crater in the Aden Emergency in 1967.
I hope he keeps the tradition alive.
By his Future Generations you mean
Somebody would want to play the pipes in Kazakhstan for two reasons: 1. To say they did it. 2. Because bagpipes would sound amazing in Kazakhstan!
What a shame there's no such subsidies to traditional artisans..
I hope they can still be standing when I can go back to Scotland.
you have the ability to start such assistance
believe it or not this video is lying when they say the last bagpipe makers...There is still a plethora of bagpipe makers
It's a thriving, cutthroat industry. My old boss must be raging at this free advertising for a rival.
@@pimpmykek3213 Not so many by hand. Many of the pipes you buy now have plastic drones and chanters as well, my old set did and that was 40 years ago now. My pipe major had a beautiful set of wooden pipes and the difference in sound was incredible.
“He’s been a piper since childhood.” My guy 🤙
As an American military musician, bagpipes have always been a magical part of tattoos, ceremonies, and funerals. The tradition is so rich and I’m glad to see the artisanship continue with hand crafting these fine instruments. Keep up the good work! I hope you still enjoy dabling here and there and haven’t given up playing with your mates completely. Someday I’ll have some time to learn the pipes. It’s on my bucket list.
Thank you for your service. Military musicians are a vital part of the impression made on civilians about our military, they embody and represent the professionalism, discipline, and skill that define the US military as much as any USMC Silent Drill Platoon, or the Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They should be regarded with pride by their fellow servicemen and countrymen.
African Blackwood is my favorite lumber. Makes beautiful knife scales, and beautiful well, beautiful everything, really.
as a bagpipe player, I'm really happy to see these two doing their best and keeping the art of creating the best instrument by hand alive.
As a person with Scottish heritage, who grew up in Australia. I would love to purchase a set to keep the tradition alive and support this beautiful trade and these amazing people
What’s stopping you?
@@Hewhodoesntgiveafck Maybe the fact that he isn't in Scotland rn?
@@astralis4367 they said they deliver worldwide maybe it’s because they cost $15k
@@wooloonator3596 $15k or $1.5k?? 🤔🤔
@@anubhav3308 15K. There’s no way they spend 4 days making one and sell it for only 1.5K. The materials alone would cost about half of that or even more.
Call me weird but, I love the sound of bagpipes. This was so great to see. I went to a military school in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin that had some bagpipe players in the school band. There is a guy who plays in the park in the summer. When I hear bagpipes, it makes me stop dead in my tracks. Hearing bagpipes makes me feel Scottish. Thank you.
In HS we had to choose an instrument we would like to work on, while we were attending the school. I choose the bagpipe because it annoyed everyone. And i weirdly, kinda liked it..
God bless everyone invovled with keeping Scottish Heritage alive!!!
I’ll drink to that.
I'm mexican of indigenous american descent, I very much appreciate it, I'm glad you are keeping your traditions alive for the next generations, we know it's not easy to do.
I loved learning about your company. My family and my husband's family are both of Scottish decent. Someday I will get across the pond and come visit your shop.
I'm a proud stewart in the states who was married with bagpipes, buried both my parents with bagpipes and recently watched 30 bagpipers lead my daughter in a graduation ceremony...I too will be buried with such honors! God bless you two owners for such dedication to your craft!
SCOTLAND FOREVER!
Wow. This is a very nice video to talk about something we should appreciate.
Pretty cool to see an inside look on a professional-grade instrument workshop! I love getting this inside view.
This was really interesting, thank you. I'm pleased David has an apprentice who loves the bagpipes as much as he does and will continue the tradition.
I also love that the kilt maker has matching face masks for his kilts.
Thanks for your kind words, tartan face masks are available on our website!
One of the things I've learned in the pandemic is that a face mask is great for keeping one's breath warm on cold days. No struggling with keeping a scarf or muffler in place!
A woolen face mask sounds just about ideal for winter. The smell of wet wool is actually very nice, I think.
@@MizzWGGrrrl also a splendid outward indication of obedience to our autocratic overlords, as well as dismal individual behavioral trends that point to very bleak future in regards to social contracts that I shudder to think about.
May this never die, traditional ways are ending, this sound of freedom should be never forgotten or watered down.
Never stop!
Just purchased my first set of bag pipes from these artisans. Thank you for the great work.
She said "Well you know what you must do then". Amazing!
The sound of bagpipes let's me know I'm home in Cape Breton. They used to play as you drove onto the island on speakers lol its in so much of our music. Would love to visit Scotland one day.
One of the best video's on UA-cam... thank you for keeping this tradition going, if you ever need a US apprentice just say the word! Slainté!
As a Highland Dancer I loved this one!
I visited this workshop the last time I was there for worlds
Going Home and Amazing Grace on the Pipes give me chills.....beautiful.
As a piper, there’s certainly nothing wrong with high quality CNC machine-lathed pipes, but I love seeing these artisans still running and making high quality pipes with perfect pitch and tone. It certainly helps keep the soul alive in piping. Great video, awesome shop.
They also have bagpipes in Northern Spain, Asturias & Galicia. Left over from the Celtics.
You can master it EB, time to play
There’s bagpipes from all over Europe, and in parts of Asia and Africa as well
Celts or Moors?
@@remiem-iw7uk , Celts. Galicia in northern Spain is a well-known Celtic region where they play bagpipes.
They also used to be played all over Europe throughout the middle ages
Very enjoyable video. I'm adding your establishment when I'm visiting Edinburgh in the fall!
i dont know how it reached here....but bagpipe is played since long in our villages in Indian hilly state in himalayas....its melodious....however not played in most of british ruled India...
Glad to see that even a master at the lathe still has an occasional hang up, makes me feel better about my skills. Lol
I still don’t understand why turning wood blanks between centers with no lathe dog is so common. I chuck one end. If you tighten it up you risk splitting the blank, especially if you’ve drilled a hole all the way through it to make a bagpipe part, loosen up and you stop the work constantly, take light cuts to keep from stopping it and it takes forever to turn it round.
Also music instruments where used for communication on the battlefield, sounds weird but it´s an effective way to get over all the screaming.
My Father and his Regiment (2nd Btn Glasgow Highlanders the 9th Highland Light Infantry) were piped ashore by the Regimental Piper at Arromanches on the 17th June 1944.
love the sound of bagpipes.
Pipes by themselves are wonderful. They have always captivated me. Then add drums, it is a fantastic combination that is difficult to rival. Thank your for keeping the craftsmanship alive!
I have a kilt outfit from Gordon Nicholson which is absolutely amazing. They now make the Sgian Dubh (sock knife) handles with offcuts from the Kilberry bagpipes. Both my brother and I have Kilberry Sgian dubhs with our kilts now. So glad these crafts are kept alive and you will not regret spending your money on either Gordon Nicolson or Kilberry products!
That’s right we make our own Sgian Dubhs from the offcuts!
Awesome to hear from you! Glad you like the Sgian Dubhs!
Cheers,
The Kilberry Team
Pipes are my favourite sounding instrument. So absolutely pure
I love the sound of bagpipes so much.
Love from Poland for all Scottish people! Drinking now Kilchoman for Your Health! Cheers! 🥃 💙🏴🤍🇵🇱❤️
I'm Scottish, I'm from Edinburgh and I never knew this story, it's braw to see such a great community support each other and continue these banging traditions. I've always loved the bagpipes and I love wearing my Edinburgh handmade kilt, may they never disappear.
The lone piper in the hills is a wonderful sound- stirs the soul, although I know there are many who'd disagree! It is so good to know that the traditions are being upheld. Thank you.
wait so there's a kiltmaker right next to a bagpipe store? Is there a guy who makes Claymores across the street and a haggis shop down the road too?
The Claymore maker is Paul MacDonald, who is across town from these guys.
Hi Grandma Anderson! And Aunt Jean of Edinburgh Scotland…how I miss u both…I remember visiting u and hearing Bagpipes for the first time. I fell in love…reminds me of you! Thanks all and keep on making them!
Absolutely beautiful..thank you for showing us your craft..shout out from New Mexico, USA..
A Great Humanitarian story. Tradition is very important to a Culture. My Grandfather was Born in Mother well Scotland. Our Scottish name is MacGregor. I Am Canadian. But will not forget My Grandfather's Heritage. Thanks for sharing 😀 👍 ❤ 🇨🇦 🏴🎉🎉👏👏👏👏🎉🎉♥️💯💯💯💯
No wonder he went to Canada Motherwell is a dump it's my hometown
Seriously this is so cool! 😁
I don't know why UA-cam recommended this to me but I'm very glad they did.
So glad these guys are keeping this Scottish craft alive. 🏴
It's great to see real honest craftsmanship! May it never die!
As a Machinist & Woodworker with a Scottish Ancestry, seeing the craftsmanship in this video is awesome. Much respect for these men.
These guys are awesome they deserve medals there country should be proud
"Crafting an artesian bagpipe takes steady hands, attention to detail, and sharp tools" -- And a lack of hearing!
(Jokes aside it's great that you guys are showing this)
All this comment section does is prove that you either love or hate bagpipes, no in between
It great that they keep their skills going...love the sound of bag pipes.
I would like to mention that they said “like all woodwinds, the reed vibrates to make the sound” this completely leaves out the flute and piccolo
They don’t have reed inserts ....
@@nagolhayze9366 that’s what Im saying
@@WillowK. ok I get it ... thought you’d just changed your tune ... 😀
And the whiskey
@@larsstougaard7097 Sir, are you saying that Scottish whiskey drinkers vibrate like reeds ... to make a sound, mid consumption ?
Ross : You know the song. Sing along.
Phoebe : Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 😂
I remember the first time I heard bagpipe. It sent chills down my spine.💓
A close friend of mine it's a Mexican bagpipe maker. He specializes in Asturian Bagpipes. I think he went to Edinburgh a couple of times to learn from the Masters.
interesting does he have an instagram
@@jawbone775 Not a business account. No. only personal Instagram. He is currently living in Munich. He started playing with the band Corvus Corax a couple of years ago.
I am an wood turner. I also admire and respect bagpipers. I took bagpipe lessons after my Dad died. A piper played at Dad’s memorial. I’m afraid I did not pursue my lessons. I wish I had. I’m too old now to learn, but I certainly admire and respect bagpipers. The evening piper at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach, California is always my favorite time with a pint.
Nothing warms my heart more than seeing two strapping lads being so passionate about blowing pipes and handling african wood
No instrument makes me as emotional as a bagpipe och preferably, many. Born far from Scotland, but went there early in life on a summer long language course. Probably the love for bagpipes started then. Thanks for sharing the hard work that goes into making one.
Hope to see your shop when I'm in Edinburgh next year
awesome video I can honestly say I've been dedicated to piping since I was 15 myself I try and practice at least a few times a week. Nothing like laying some pipe
Amazing! Glad to see tradition still exists!
Huge respects to all artisans who keeps their traditions alive. In a world of copycats and mass production, these artists are absolute national treasures. I always adore and cherished all products of human ingenuities.
Great video! Business Insider has turned into How it's made
Beautiful! Everything about the pipes the dress, tradition.
i played bagpipe in school in delhi, i didnt played it literally, i just joined the group to skip classes, i was just there to be an extra since no one was intrested, though i didnt knew how to play it, but one thing i knew that it was not easy to play, and make
Same! We had a marching band - they started us out with flutes and then we graduated to bagpipes lmao. It was amazing honestly - I still love flutes and would absolutely buy a bagpipe when I have the cash for it.
Really really cool video. Thanks for that!
Mad respect, for these mad lads! The Bagpipes are so soothing, and if I could learn to play them, then I, too, would thus Honor my Heritage, and Liberate my Soul!
@@WildRover1964 congratulations on your first, as well! You have successfully attempted to troll me, but it's just too bad, that you'll have to do better. Cheers, lad! 🍻
Seeing that metal "hand" spinning and grinding like that, no wonder they don't hand make them like that any more !
I'm not a big bagpipe fan but I'm glad they're still being made and played for tradition's sake.
Hope you keep your tradition ailve sir.
I play the Scottish Highland Bagpipes and it so cool. 100% recommend it if you can.
A very nice and intersting story about Scotland's instrument, thanks/tàpadh léith . 👏👏👏⚔️⚔️🏴

Hahahaha
That will be a long time from now
Bagpipes are hellish instruments that in the hands of an angel make heavenly music.
It's beautiful thanks for sharing.
I fell in love with bagpipes and bagpiper's frocks when I first saw them on a bagpiper bottle 😆
This is Amazing
Great video, thank you 😊
So neat! ♡ my papas favorite I instrument was the bag pipe everytime I hear a set play I think of him ♡
Have just acquired a set with the brass and boxwood mounts.Enjoying them. Brought them off a guy in Scotland who had them from new, only about 2 years old. Nice tone good feel look forward to years of enjoyment with them. They live in the office with a 170 year old set of McDougalls, my other pride and joy.
Amazing
the hair of this guy is absolutely gorgeous
I love Bagpipes.
Thank you for posting. I didn't know. Now I have a compass.
Och love me bagpipes, the sound of home

If you play that at my funeral, I'll come back and haunt you.
Yo just imagine, you are a German chillin in the trench and hear and see the highlanders coming at you
@@nandinhocunha440 *I can imagine for a culture of people that has never heard bagpipes before, it may have sounded other worldly, perhaps even spooky, invoking fear & confusion due to the unknown nature of the unique & intense "noise".*

I was in Edinburgh years ago, and some geez was playing on the street late at night just north of the castle.
It was amazing. Actually took walking around a couple of blocks to find the man as the sound just seemed to be coming from every direction
Amazing! These are true artisans.
Just stopped by and they were hard at work!
Wonderful
