The Tanager being an Iowa class Battleship is the only ship that truly sinks due to it not having modern damage control systems. Most of the ships in the fleet would have been repaired and put back to sea. With just a missile strike on its Island the Geofon would have likely remained operational, at least enough to get her out of theater.
Not to mention all the ships which are "sunk" in port, those can just be raised later as the port waters aren't deep. Not to mention that none of those ships are really sunk, it's just their superstructures being destroyed.
I think they ignored this realism going forward....I mean look at 7 where we go back here and the other missions in which you engage the Erusean fleet. Here in 4, destroying the main superstructure still left the rest of the ship able to fire at you. In 7 right now? You destroy the main part of the ship (at least now they take more than 2 missiles, even if they are boosted), the _entire_ ship is destroyed and you get points for destroying everything, even when you only damaged the main part of the ship....from there they actually DO seem to sink (at least, I never noticed a smoking vessel lying in my wake afterwards)... Im Here from The Future And You Just Fail To Kill The Captain Of The Battleship Tanager. and at 2019 he will back with the new Submarine To Take Revenge.
The arguements that most of the ships are not permamently disabled are correct, however the backstory of the mission is that in the preceding mission you destroy the petrochemical industry which fuels the fleet and thus the fleet was stuck at Comberth without fuel to escape to Erusea proper. This mission merely makes sure that the fleet is further immobilized by causing maximum damage to command and control. A missile hitting the island of the Geofon indeed would not sink it, but it would destroy the radar and flight control needed for proper cag operations.
Losing the Island would make flight ops more difficult but not impossible. A strike to the flight deck would make launching or recovering aircraft impossible. A strike to the waterline and now the entire ship is in jeopardy. The biggest loss with a strike to the Island would be the loss of leadership with the captain, xo and air boss all being located there.
So this mission basically confirms that Ace Combat munitions are way more powerful than ours, if a single JDAM was able to sink an Iowa-class battleship/
