    When they refit the Iowa's IRL for service in the 1980s, there were proposals to update and automate a lot of ship functions. This would have freed up a lot of space. Perhaps in Strangereal this space was used to refit the Tanager with additional C4I capabilities optimizing it to be a flag ship

    Something I just realised that made me appreciate the Eruseans a little more: They didn’t try to downplay this or cover it up. I say this because often times, some countries that are more “fanatical”, so to speak, wouldn’t have awarded Torres for his actions. In addition, the mere fact Torres was awarded, and not shunned, by the Navy shows another point, that Erusea doesn’t blame officers directly responsible for the defeat. Torres could easily have been shunned for helping his fellow sailors rather than fight back.

    At the risk of being "that guy" and only because it's my favorite plane, the ailerons on the F-4 at 10:30 and again at 12:12 (where the same drawing is reused) are incorrect. The F-4 used a combination of ailerons and spoilers for its roll control. The ailerons primarily moved down, and only had a maximum up angle of 1 degree. Instead, a spoiler in front of the aileron on the wing would rise and provide that control. To my knowledge, this is accurately represented in every Ace Combat game starting with AC04.
    But now that I'm done being an annoying nitpicker, this video is fantastic as all yours are, and the production quality just keeps improving every time. Incredible, please keep it up!

    • @JoeShmoe376

      Patches I recall it’s weird design being described as an “aerodynamic band-aid”. Pilots weren’t particularly fond of it.

    • @smittywjmj
      @smittywjmj 4 роки тому +3

      @@JoeShmoe376 A lot of its design was compromise, but that's true for any plane. The most noteworthy "band-aid" in the design are the opposing dihedral wingtips and anhedral horizontal stabilators, which hampered maneuverability and increased drag slightly, but solved the stability problems that early mockups had.
      The combined spoiler/aileron roll controls were a bit unique but the concept wasn't especially "out there," for example the WWII-era P-61 also used a combination of ailerons and spoilers to roll, with the only difference being that the ailerons had a full upward and downward range of motion. I've never heard of any pilot disliking the roll controls specifically, although they do note that the controls tend to become ineffective at supersonic speeds, and the rudder is used to roll the aircraft instead.

    Real life: America has the F series of fighters and they made the 4 Iowa battleships.
    Strangereal: every nation has the F series of fighters and an iowa is owned by Erusea, Estovakia and others.

      THIS!
      I love strangereal based AC games, but this drives me crazy. I really hope Sol can make video about it.
      I dont think that corporations work that way in strangereal either. In AC5, Grunder Industries (officially now Osean manufacturer) is *smuggling* planes to Yukes, to prolong the war and arm the aggressor units there. The fact they do so in secret implies that Osea would not allow them to do that if they knew. And in general, the first thing any nation would do would be to block company from selling to their enemies, and later would nationalize said company. Only way for companies to prevent this would be essentialy large private militaries to protect them, which I never heard of (and, once again, the fact that Grunder *does* have some sort of private military is to everyone's shock if I remember AC5 correctly).

      But in AC, if it was Osea who developed F-22, they had no qualms about selling it to anybody, which bitten them in the ass in every war ever since.

      *My boi Mobius tho*
      Trigger and friends have to protect one cannon of (AC4 Superweapon) Stonehenge, because with a single shot it can decimate an arsenal bird (AC7 Superweapon) of which there is two.
      Could you imagine going up against 7 of those damn things, fully armed and operational? Firing constantly as you fly towards here and dance in the sky around it, the barrel only a few thousand feet away. Along with being attacked by an upgraded Mihaly and upgraded Sol squadron? While also doing it practically all alone?
      *MY BOI MOBIUS THO*
      Jokes aside, Keiki Kobayashi himself confirmed Megalith as the penultimate and most powerful superweapon of the franchise. That thing is capable of turning entire continents into moonscapes from asteroid impacts, *By continuously firing laserbeam guided, nuclear Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles at asteroids in orbit, causing them to fragment and boom towards a ?precalculated? point of impact on Earth's surface. Ironically, this great terrible power the Ribbon Fighter defeats, uses the Ulysses Crisis itself to rain meteoric hell on the planet.
      Going against that alone?

    The weirdest thing about the Torres shot for me is the actual physical impossibility of a Creusot-Loire 100mm L/55 on a Cassard-class even reaching 30 km. At the most optimal angles it could only fire at 17 km before physics dictates that the shell lands. This leads to a couple of possibilities that are rather strange to consider. The first would be that the Eruseans somehow thought it made sense to add rocket-assisted projectiles, however with the increased air pressure of a storm this wouldn't be guaranteed to even reach the 30 km barrier, not to mention that missiles in the VLS are generally better for those ranges. Second would combine with the first reason in that the Herne was noticeably above her target so combined with the rocket-assisted projectiles it would make it possible to land the shot. Third would be that the Herne was retrofitted with a 5 inch L/62 that would be found in US-design ships, but that's more unlikely if taking a look at the in-game model I think. Fourth is that gravity in SR is considerably lower than normal, also leading to lower atmospheric pressure for less drag. However this would imply some very drastic changes in SR's entire geography and contradict the DLC. It's one of those really weird things to think about that keeps me up at night.
    As for the Tanager, I'd definitely say it's just pure symbolism on top of AC 4 having strong WWII vibes. Back in the day it was common for battleships and aircraft carriers alike to be flagships. It wouldn't be a dumb option either as the RL Iowa was actually armed with missiles in the Cold War. You could load a few dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles on there and some Harpoons, and normally anti-ship missiles are HE-frag because everything is paper, while the Iowa's belt is slightly over 300mm of face-hardened steel. She even had some electronic warfare systems for those pesky missiles as well as Phalanx CIWS because you can put that shit anywhere. The problems would come from how she doesn't have the missile payload of other more modern ships, the lack of a nuclear reactor for when you want to save on fuel, the electronic warfare suite is kinda limited because you can't hook that shit up to a nuclear reactor the Iowa doesn't even have and the logistics cost. That and no torpedo tubes nor even provisions for anti-sub missiles means that she's also vulnerable to submarines. So in the end what you get is a really chunky destroyer that has trouble defending herself. She can take a beating, but the beatings won't stop coming. It's cute to see a relic fight alongside proper modern ships though. Then again since when do SR fleets even remember they have defensive measures up the bum that makes a single fleet a superweapon fight?

    • @ANDREALEONE95

    • @plswhy
      @plswhy 4 роки тому +1

      @@ANDREALEONE95 While that's the case that would result in the best chance of hitting a target at 30 km, note that Torres's shot is explicitly stated to be a feat of gunnery, not missiles. A 30 km shot with Exocets is also not impressive. In fact it can be argued that 30 km with such missiles might as well be point-blank range relatively speaking.

    1:40 u are right about ace combat getting the ships classified wrongly, like I remember in ace combat 6 when talisman destroys some estovakian warships, the dialogue from ghost or from shamrock would be like:
    Talisman destroyed an estovakian Cassand class guided missile destroyer, ghost eye would say “enemy destroyer sunk”
    Talisman destroyed an estovakian Ticonderoga guided missile cruiser, shamrock would say “Garuda 1 sank an Aegis destroyer!”
    So yeah I have no idea why they get the classifications wrong, I mean we all know that a Cassard frigate isn’t a guided missile destroyer and a Ticonderoga cruiser isn’t a guided missile aegis destroyer

    Solutus, you seem to be the most knowledgable person on Strangereal lore there is. Maybe you could finally answer the question that burns me since I become AC fan, and really halts my love for the series and its setting sometimes.
    *Why do different countries use same planes?*
    I can understand that this is a fictional world unrelated ours. I can accept that for some reason they developed same jets as us, including names. What drives me absolutely crazy is why do opposing countries use the same designs?
    In our world, F-22 and later F-35 were game changers. Other countries are only now slowly catching up, and US has almost undisputed air superiority for decades now. I dont know who developed F-35 in Strangereal, but why would anyone give it up to other nation? AC5 sort of addresses this with Pops talking about how Grunder supplied Jets to Yukes, but that cutscene itself opens more questions that it gives answers.
    I would be very eager to know your opinion on this. Thanks!

      I'm not an expert in ace combat lore, not even close, but if i'm not mistaken thats because in strangereal nations don't build or design the airplanes, companies do and those companies sell their designs to whoever wants it

    • @lihkan
      @lihkan 4 роки тому

      @@carso1500 But thats the problem I addressed. In our world, planes are not made by countries directly either, atleast not in the US and Europe.
      But the countries in which is the company is located strictly control to who it sells military hardware. Boeing is a independent company, which is can sell civilian jet liners to whomever they please. They can sell however sell F-15s only to countries which US congress allows them to.
      Lets say that Osean company develops new cutting edge jet. Osean government would obviously liked to have this jet, and for nobody else to have it, since i would give them advantage. Osean government (presumably) supplies such company with electricity, workforce, etc. Osea also have standing army. What prohibits Osea from forcing the company to comply? One day, slick government representative shows up on the door, and says: "Look, those planes you are making could be quite a gamechanger. We would really prefer the Yukes to not have them. We give you nice tax bonus if you sell them only to us." And if the company declines the offer, what prohibits the government from simply shutting down the power, and prohibiting the workers to come to the job? And later, what prohibits Osea from nationalizing your company, with force if necessary? *Hippity Hoppity, this factory is now Bright Hill's property.*
      The only thing that could prevent Osea from doing so would be if the company has *its own standing military* ready to defend it. But there is zero evidence to that in AC games I played. Quite the opposite, when Grunder is revealed to have such a military, its a big plot twist (ie, something completely uncommon and unexpected). Also, having military is really non-profitable, and having such a great burden on them would not look good on bottom line numbers. It would be more profitable just to sell to one country than sell to everyone but also keep your own bunch of expensive mercs afloat and loyal.

    • @carso1500
      @carso1500 4 роки тому

      @@lihkan yeah thats would make perfect sense thats why irl only certain countries have certain airplanes because the countries prohibit their exportation because advanced aircraft can be a game changer (except the russians who sell their airplanes to anyone who can pay them because they are desperate for some bucks)
      But if that was the case in ace combat that wouldnt be fun because then you would only fight at much a couple diferent aircraft that that country has access to instead of a diverse pool from all around the world and that would also mean that you wouldnt be capable of using an f-22 and the change to a su-57 for the same misión
      I think this is one of those ocasions when lógic gets thrown out of the window in regards for gameplay
