(Pizza night at the Yard 7:25) That sailing community gathering is absolutely amazing and this is the first of MANY years of watching sailing videos that this has happened. Closest was over in the panama city area . That is the largest group of UA-cam sailors in one boat yard that I have ever seen. AWESOME ! Most of the time even Delos would be somewhere in Thailand working on their boat alone. Wow, so cold for Mexico. I guess that is better than roasting while sanding, right !
@13:22 There's a small knob on it that determines how far left and right the belt rides on the sander plane. You've got it adjusted too far "inward" and its snagging.
It’s so easy to watch your videos and see all the fun and excitement your lifestyle brings you. It’s also easy to overlook all the house of back breaking work you have to do to maintain the boat to keep yourselves safe. I know the trade off is worth it or you wouldn’t do it. It’s just that I appreciate both side more now.
Me too. We've just bought an old boat, an old wooden trawler, so it's very different to a yacht but I am learning all sorts from watching your channel. Thank you, hopefully I don't stuff up too badly.
Congrats on the work. That is a lot of work! Keep going. Cheering you all on. Love Nugs reaction when you arrived. So happy to see you at the SV Delos apartment. Blessing to all of you!
Nice job! It's looking good. Thanks for making the video. For land lubbers like me who dream of cruising it's good to see how hard you work to live a cruising life.
Great to see all of the bottom work getting close to coming to an end. Keep up the hard work and we'll be seeing in the water in no time. You're so fortunate to have such good friends!
Dumb Question! Have you ever thought there might be blisters on the hull under the support stands???? I love your channel! Great work! Can't wait to see her splash!!
Ha good point! The yard wound up moving the boat and they may have been a missed one or two 🙃, we had already done all the barrier coats and bottom painting, could bring ourselves to bring a grinder to the hull again LOL
Thanks 👍 She's starting to look better 😍. We were chatting with the folks and they remarked she came in looking rode hard and put away wet LOL. Guess 35k miles and 2 weeks of haul out in that time will do that LOL
You are really coming along nicely with your yard projects. I would say that everything so far has gone about as smoothly as could be expected. What some might see as problems With your arch etc. I would say are no more than the small hiccups that always come with any boat projects. You’re doing great so hold your head high my friend!
Another great episode showing visible progress. Getting her prettied up with bottom paint and the new arch should give you a second wind for smaller projects. Two really good looking pizzas for just under 8 bucks!? Wow! Makes you look forward to Wednesdays in the Liquid Lounge. BTW, Didn't Grace grow up in Canada?....and did figure skating....on ice? I thought Canadians were hardy stock and ignored the cold. At about 7:53 you would think she was at the North Pole! 😂😂
Thanks Ron! We are slowlyyyy getting there :) Sure does! Ya there are some really great food deals around here. Different ones on different days of the week :) HA she lost that YEARS ago but that is true lol
The hull is really starting to look good and the arch is coming along nicely hope it won't be long until you splash the boat and can see if those improvements hold up.
You have a boat from Scappose Or there called Kaaluna ,,thats my home town one of many say hi from Rousseau's. Love your sharing all your working on thank you guys.
Always look forward to your videos - thanks so much. Enjoy watching the DIY struggles - you all clearly have the skills (or moxie) to take them on. Do you know when you'll tackle the Pacific crossing?
The grown-up version of the dremel is a die grinder... scary scary thing, but what you can do to fibreglass with a dremel, you can do to 6mm steel with a die grinder!
If you are snapping belts, then it's possible you have the tension set too high - usually right near the lever you use for fitting the belt is a kind of thumbwheel you can use to set the tension.
@@CalicoSkiesSailing I generally set mine to just past the point where it stops slipping. Also when you're using it you shouldn't need to apply any pressure, the weight of the tool itself is usually about right - obviously that goes completely out of the window when you're using it upside down, but hey. Another handy tip is that the body is usually designed so that you can clamp it upside down in a vice and apply the workpiece to it, rather than the tool to the workpiece - which can be handy when you're trying to shape something rather than flatten it.
The lead keel in the back .... looks like it is split ? Never seen it like that on any other boat, the keel on our 30 foot Catalina somehow was in one piece and bolted on with 7 embedded keel bolts. Whats with this split keel ? Why ? Just curious.
Where there is a joint, I believe it's a "false keel"(fiberglass stub) next to the lead keel. I'm not sure if Calico has keel bolts like a Catalina or not.
Yea we aren't sure why we have that little fiberglass stub, it's not a bilge or anything, only thing we can think is if the keel hits a rock or something it support the keel and doesn't put all the sheer load onto the keel bolts.
Before you guys " cast off" and leave town after This tremendous tune up. You should try to do a last dinner on the TOP of the hill. The 2 restaurants up there are " El Capitan" (which I was familiar with) or "the Light house" Appropriate name being its where Rocky Points light house is. The key to the Dinner would be Perfect timing for Sunset! It was magical...we were in the FRONT window, looking across to the Bahia as the COLOR SHOW went on. And of course " J-J'S..." CHOLLA BAY...
She's coming right along. That pizza looked pretty good and a good deal. That epoxy on the deck that didn't go off. Could have been a uneven flow through the static-head mixer or using it right as it comes out of the mixer. Throw away the first 3 or 4 pumps after epoxy comes out of the mixer. Pump it on to a piece of scrap and use it for a timer for the material you put in place.
If your belts are breaking buy new belts. I was using some belts I had in the shop and was breaking one every 5 or 10 minutes. Bought new belts and never break another belt, I was even able to use a rubber to clean them out when they were full.
I’ve only worked with fiberglass a handful of times, but letting the epoxy resin get tacky before laying in the cloth is genius! Probably saves you from quite a bit of swearing😂
Most humble sailing channel..
Wish you all the best guys.. GBU

Groovy video. Can't wait to see you guys back in the water and sailing again.
Hero Bill and Princess Gracie, getting it done. Good work. Everything is looking great.
😍😍 thank u!!
@@CalicoSkiesSailing You're welcome.
All that work is really paying off with a nice looking (and now know to be a solid) bottom!
Yes indeed!
Killin it Bildo! :)
lol
That's ALOT of work! Nothing is more satisfying than pulling the waterline masking tape off the hull when the last coat has dried!
You are 100% right!
That’s so nice that Jeff came to help you! The bottom of Calico is looking amazing!
Yea he’s the best :) Thank u!!
Nice job! As you get closer to the finish line, don’t forget to stock up on champagne for the day Calico Skies gets wet again!
Thats a VERY good idea!
Looking great! Love seeing your amazing progress each week!
Thanks so much! Total Boat is a huge help to us during this refit!! Thanks for all the support!

Hey Mr. Bill, I learned something tonight with that drill in reverse before drilling in forward tip, very cool😎
Happy to hear that!

Great to see the results! Painting is always therapeutic !

Hello from beautiful NC!. Thanks for sharing.
Hello 👋 Thanks for watching!
I keep on hearing you are moving holes. You can move holes, wow I would like to learn that. 🙃

So cool! I think that is Kim &Chris?! Super Nice Folks!
@@CalicoSkiesSailing They are smart for being down there this time of year working on things and not in oregon its cold and wet.....
Uhhh...did the rocks under the boat need so much paint?😄😁😆
Rule of thumb, minimum 2 coats
😂 they don't call me Picasso for nothin'
We got a minimum of 5! HA
Need plenty to encapsulate the lead contamination so the children they hire to rake the gravel later dont get poisoned.
@@benlund3905Really… gotta inject these types of comments?

Thanks Dot, so glad you enjoy them, that's our goal! We try :) It will be next year, early Spring🤞🏼
Looks like you are nearing the finish line? How cold was it, you were all sitting close to the fire at pizza time.
Gets down to the 40s at night, cold when you're just sitting around!
Hull is looking good. Bill who makes the sunglasses you were wearing. Would like to get a pair. Thanks
Hi Doug, thanks! They are Maui Jim :)
Nice work hope all goes to plan! Check if the belt was put in, in the correct direction. Did it rip at the connection seam ?
Kinda ripped in a random spot, like it got bound up or something
great progress! nice work! good video. what color will your new water stripe be and are you going to treat any or your wood with oil or varnish?
Thank u! Our boot stripe is going to be black and we just started working on the wood. We are mostly varnishing doing some with teal oil :)
@@CalicoSkiesSailing cool....looking forward to the slick result....its not a boat yard, its a beauty parlor
If you figure out how to get the belt sander to not rip really quickly, I’d love to know it myself
