MEMBRANOUS NEPHROPATHY : WHAT IS NEW ?

Membranous Nephropathy is the commonest cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. It can also occur in children. It can be primary ( automimmune) or secondary to Hepatitis B , Hepatitis C, malaria. It can also be a manifestation of an underlying cancer. The diagnosis can be made only by a kidney biopsy. these patients need to be started on ACE like Ramipril or Telmisratan. There is a new blood test called ANTIPLA2R ANTIBODY which helps in diagnosis, deciding treatment as well as followup of these patients.Thos who have idiopathic or autoimmune disease need immunosuppressive therapy with prednsione, cyclophosphamide. Tacrolimus is an alternative agent that can be used. Rituximab is new medicine which can be given twice a month and has been found to be of great benefit in these patients.
