Woodland Photography - Seeing Through Chaos

  • My first time discovering and exploring fantastic mossy oakwoods in Wales. Chaos and complexity comes with the territory in woodland photography but in this episode I begin to talk about seeing flow and order in the chaos. Making sense of woodland scenes takes a lot of practice and an intimate knowledge of the location is a huge help. This was my first time in this particular woodland so it was fun to make a start and I'm excited to see what this place holds for future trips.
Oh, my dog isn't broken, she just loves being there even more then me :-P

I was eating breakfast and had a thought about the midges. Every video from across the pond is infested with them. We have gnats and greenheads down near our marshes and the best thing to use is Skin so Soft. I suggest giving it a try. If it doesn't work at least you will be the best smelling photographer in the woods.

"Embrace the Chaos" is an important mantra that we use here on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State (USA). Forest chaos here rules the day. We do not see chaos as imperfection; "perfection" is a human construct that does not fit the natural forest. Indeed, "chaos" is an important ecological characteristic of forest that should be embraced and not disparaged. Continue to embrace it and you will see many benefits. Very enjoyable to see a photographer who is not put off by what is a natural forest feature!

Beautiful summer morning in Maine, a hot cup of coffee and a Simon Baxter video, great way to start a day. I like the way you explain your vision of creating a composition, what could improve it or detracts from it, helps me to slow down and think in my own shooting. Can not emphasis enough how much I enjoyed watching Meg rolling in the moss included in the video. One of the simple joys in life is seeing children and animals playing and just having fun!

Simon, I don’t know how you do it. As you know, woodland photography as a sub-genre of landscape photography is one of the most difficult genres of all photography genres to consistently get good results and somehow you manage to do it nearly every time you go out. There are many great landscape photographers and many of them get a nice woodland shot from time to time but you are so consistent in what you do. Keep it up man!

Always great to hear more of your thoughts on composing woodland photographs. I need to get back to the UK, we just don't have woodlands like that in Ohio...

I like how you refer to "we." I don't know whether you're referring to your audience, or your dog. She is a hoot!

Sometimes it's referring to Meg but in this case I had a friend with me. Thank you!

Superb shots and philosophy as usual Simon; could you be more specific about the location?. I'm sure Dave Griff won't mind that there's more to Wales than Snowdonia, special though it is. More please.

I'm sat in my office at home (also in Wales, by the way!) and that segment with the midges from about 5mins in had me scratching my face! They are a nuisance...

I too love woodlands, particularly during/after rainfall. It's a amazing experience, with the sights, sounds and smells. Subscribed because of that fluff called Meg. I (and I think many others) will be disappointed if she is not included in all your videos.

As I’m sure you know, that Meg steals the show once again. I have to admit that on many of your pieces to camera, that I have to replay them because Meg is in the background “ stealing the show “
Thoroughly enjoyable video with some great images.

I might try to apply same philosophy to photographing our Australian bush, which I struggle to get excited about.

    • @QuarkCharmed

Gum trees dominate the Australian woodland, unfortunately they look great and moody when dry and dead with no foliage but when alive, they create visual chaos and mess with the foliage. Places with tall eucalypts look nice and impressive but very hard to get through, it's nothing like UK forests like the one in this video. You need a machete to get deeper than 50-100 metres into the bush...
