This scene will always be, in my opinion, the best example of tragedy of war in gaming. It was the first time that I, a 7 year old, realized thst war is not just good vs evil, brave men and cowards... This scene made me even feel bad for the germans that were shooting at me, as you saw the scared faces of german corpses. Truly masterful potrail of emotional horrors of war.
Funnily enough my mother was German and my father was Russian. He had this game on his PS3 and it was my first CoD game I ever played. I watched Indiana Jones as a kid and it was firmly placed in my head that Germany was evil, despite the fact I was half German. After playing this mission and seeing all the soldiers die simply over the fact they were scared made me think of there really was a good guy. It made me realise that this was a real conflict, and real people died in this very real war. I feel you on this one.

The original name for this tune is Ton-y-Botel. It's the tune to an old hymn about fighting valiantly for Truth, even to the death, called "Once to Every Man and Nation". It's really the perfect song for this kind of game, and any situation like it.
@@Yeahimman32 I had heard that hymn years ago, so when I was playing through the original Call of Duty and United Offensive recently, I kept hearing the lyrics in my head 😂

Michael Giacchino is among the greatest gaming composers of all times, next to frank klepachi. His performance in COD 1 and MOHAA was fantastic and fondlely remembered as some of my best childhood games, much thanks to these kind of increadible, memorable OSTs. Goodbye to good old fashioned gaming, all we have now are copy paste, low investment, cash-grab games.
This is Call of Duty, not stuff like BO3. This was when you were just an insignificant cog in the machine, one of many thousands sent to their doom, in a time where heroes didn't live long. You weren't a super soldier badass. You were just a regular grunt who could die at any moment. And that was why people fell in love with the series. This is actually the score played at the end of the Soviet campaign at the train station when the train full of reinforcements arrives and the battle is won.
the original lyrics to this song. Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side; Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight, And the choice goes by forever, ’twixt that darkness and that light. Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust, Ere her cause bring fame and profit, and ’tis prosperous to be just; Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside, Till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied. New occasions teach new duties, time makes ancient good uncouth, They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth. Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong; Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

This song is based on the hymn "Once to Every Man and Nation", written by an abolitionist in protest of the Mexican-American War and the annexation of slaveowning Texas, for the power these events gave to the slave states.
