What Does a Python Bite Feel Like?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- You have a new snake but what happens if you get bit? How bad is a bite from a ball python or a super dwarf reticulated python, or a black-headed python? Well I took three bites one evening and filmed it all so we could do a bit of a bite comparison. I'm going to answer the question, how bad does it hurt?

My husband recently got a ball python. Sweetest lil thing ever, has never even tried to strike except for when we first got her and she was so scared. I’ve been around him handling her, and I’ve gotten used to her presence. After watching this I might actually have the courage to handle her for the first time..the bite was always the worst thing in my mind and it stopped me from holding her so many times. Thanks for this! ✨
Did it bite you? 🤓
How is it going with the snake?
The last bite I took was from my adult female ball python who shot past the food on the tongs and got my entire thumb. Because it was completely in her mouth so got super excited and it took a long time to get her to let go. I dont tend to spray liquids into thier mouths because Ive heard they can aspirate it, so I generally just unwind them and wait until they let go. My big retic has got me a couple of times though and its always on my hands because I'm not paying enough attention, or last time it was because it was 3am and she was trapped between the glass and her flipped water dish so I had to go in and release her - but it was 3am and dark and she was in full food mode so she came rushing up and took my hand. That bruised but it still stopped bleeding immediately. Even a large retic bite isnt too bad usually.
My 2 year old ball bit the back of my hand the other day when i was feeding her. My first bite. I thought it was going to be way worse. Thanks for this amazing video!
I have taken only 2 bites from my oldest ball python in 27 years. Both were feeding response and totally my fault. The first bite was 12 years ago and was just a quick tag. I barely felt it. The 2nd time, he held on for 2 seconds. It still wasn't that bad.
Taking a bite from a 6ft boa constrictor hurt a bit, but still not nearly as bad getting bit hard by a dog, even a smaller one.
Now it’s time for comparisons of Croc Monitors, Black Dragons and Black Throats. Or…snake bites to the nose. Kent will be happy to participate, I’m sure! Lol. This was so interesting and I didn’t know that BP’s have the “roof of the mouth, inside teeth”. I have yet to be bit but I’m not afraid of it happening. Marie is too sweet and Darwin may do a defensive bite but he’d probably hide first. Another great video Bob!!🦎🐍❤️
Thanks Lori, I'm glad you liked it. I'm going to take a guess on the monitors: croc monitor would be the worst, then black throat, then a asian water monitor. But any of those could be terrible medically significant bites.
Off course croc monitor bites are the worst. But better not be bitten...😉
I would not take a Croc monitor bite. 💀 Noooo way.
@@Cheesedaddy11 nope!
Im with clint on that one. Aside from komodo dragons, and certain venomous snakes, croc monitors are the most dangerous reptile in the world. Just Google a photo of their skull, that thing can absolutely bleed you out under the wrong circumstances
As a keeper of snakes, I LOVE hearing that to get bites to happen, you had to scent your arm with a mouse. I'm simply not going to do that. :) I had 8 snakes 30+ years ago, and 8 now (counting my granddaughter's), and the only two times I've ever been bitten was 1) by a baby ball python at an expo, and 2) and adult Rosy Boa that I bought. Neither hurt at all. It's really the shock that it happened and they move so fast they startle you. I still am very cautious and touch them with a hook before picking them up, but that's mostly to let them know I'm there and not food (hook training basically). It's less stressful for me and the snake both.
Sounds like you're very careful not to scent to your arm 😉
Hook training is a really good thing to do with any snake.
Thank you Bob for all the effort you do for educating the public. This definitely helps me feel less nervous about any bite from my Howl❤
Oh thanks, I'm glad this helped!
This is a question I have always been curious about, I knew they weren't venomous but I had no idea how serious the bleeding would be. All us snake babies appreciate you taking 3 for the team
When the first bite was blurred I got VERY worried. I thought it took a chunk out.
There's almost no damage at all and it's even difficult to see the next day. It's just that everywhere the snake has a tooth it will make a little blood spot on your arm ;-)
Mine bit me on my arm when feeding her right on a fresh tattoo and that’s the only time it ever hurt. I could feel that one😂
"Fish would be okay to be bit by." Arowana keepers: 😬
😄
her trying to pull you in shouldn't have been kind of adorable XD
GReat video! One thing that got me over this fear is seeing how youtubers like you, Garrett, or Emily on Snake Discovery actually tend to be really blase about bites. Seeing people's real reactions let me know that it wasn't much to be worried about. I *have* been bitten once by Sangfroid the House Snake, but it wasn't his fault- He was aiming for the pinkie and my finger got in the way. So I can say he's never tried to bite me! Finnley my BP baby is even more chill. I've been bit by a snake, and by a cat, and a CAT bite is SO MUCH WORSE. And yet look how many people don't even mind being bitten by cats! Yeah a snake bite is scary and sudden but... it's like nothing. (also! Adorable pretty squiggle there at the end, what a beauty. Calico is amazing.)
Yes I agree. It's helpful to see other people take bites and not react to them :-)
Cats are indeed the worst. I still have scars from all the bites from my grandma's cat. And I don't do anything wrong to him. He just decides to bite me. He's a lunatic. A non venomous snake (not very big snakes offcourse like retics!) bite is nothing. Even rear fanged snake bites are nothing if ot allergic. Except a boomslang that's trouble, and certain death untreated if we're talking obout colubrids.
Taking home my first bp in 3 days and I am binging your videos!!! I have the enclosure already set up but I am overthinking everything so your videos are absolutely easing my nerves!
I'm glad the videos are helping, congrats on your new snake!
Hi Bob, After a year of study I finally got my first adult ball python and I love him. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
That's great, congratulations on the new snake
Cool man!!! Maybe one day I will get my first snake (BP). They’re so cute 😍
Love this. I'm always nervous and don't want to pull away if it happens, so this gave me some confidence to try and be a little more chill.
Excellent topic and video! You truly have great sense of how to make videos on point in great knowledge plus a hint of humor with Kent. Very impressive!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked the video. I appreciate the kind words!
Green Room Pythons you are one of the channels here on UA-cam with the most knowledge on ball pythons, hands down. Great content.
Thank you very much Max, I'm glad you enjoy the content!
I am so appreciative of you doing this video. I have been struck, but he didn't stay on and/or wrap. I always wondered what would happen, what it would feel like, and I might panic slightly since he would start wrapping. This helps minimize the anxiety and tells me what to do if he does grab on and wrap. Thank you!
I'm glad this was helpful for you!
My first bite I don't even think should count as a bite haha. Was more like a slap from my yearling ball python's mouth while in hunt mode and happened to hit with a tooth! He definitely realized quickly that I wasn't food. I still love him so much and his bite was so cute.
Sounds like he politely stopped himself 😉
Right? It's actually kind of adorable. Like Such tiny amount of damage and you feel almost proud of them for being able to break skin. "Who's such a fierce predator? you are!" Of course I prefer when they don't bite but the occasional accident is a little bit cute.
most people: you can't take the whole meal home
Eko: bet (tries to drag the grown man's entire arm into her house)
Wonderful video, I'm glad you're helping educate people on how snakes behave ❤❤
Great video Bob! The shock value is truly the only bad part. However, getting bit on the tips of the fingers does hurt a little more but still not serious.
I'm sure it does. I don't think I've ever been bit on a fingertip, but I will say the heel of the hand is a relatively painful spot to be bit. Maya did that once 😄
The arch of the foot hurts, too!! My 6 year old ball did that once. Sweet mercy! The other UA-camrs that said python bites are "superficial" have never taken a full whack on the foot arch! Some minor blood, but a bruise for a week! Still.... I'd rather get bit by my python than my Flemish giant rabbit any day. Almost needed stitches from one bite from a herbivore lol!! And my students are terrified of the snake but want the rabbit to come to school lol!
I’ve been looking for your cleaning supplies! Found the wipes and F10 but couldn’t find the other one so the linked were very helpful! Thank you.
If you found f10 you don't need the chlorhexidine. Those are just two different brands of veterinary grade disinfectant. But I get both of them on Amazon just based on whichever is available at the time
@@GreenRoomPythons awesome! I didn’t know that so more useful information! Thank you!!
Well last night I got my first bite, and I'm here to tell you it was ALL MY FAULT. I was working on a new enclosure, thawing rats, and failed to wash my hands. I try to be diligent Bob, but my brain was on the off switch obviously. He's my best feeder, and it was a food response indeed and I just didn't move the other hand he struck as I do on s good day. It stopped bleeding fast enough and Oliver and I are both over it lol I was more worried about him being ok this morning and that he ate. I appreciate all you do, just wanted to tell ppl you were absolutely right once again ❤ take good care, much respect Bob.
Cool video Bob 🎉 poor Kent working in such a danger zone 😂
He's always asking for hazard pay.
This made me subscribe to you. I appreciate this video and you explained things very well. I rescued a hugely defensive 3 - 4 month old bp that is so defensive when you walk by her enclosure or open the top she curls up into an S instantly, and even has struck at the air between us several times.
Well done for rescuing that snake! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Nom nom nom! I am shocked that Bear's bite was worse than Maya's. When he wrapped you, though, that definitely looked painful, and Maya's didn't really LOOK painful at all. I am so used to watching Eko try to eat you though, I'm like, fully desensitized to her mischievous behavior at this point. Well done showing off that finger bite without flipping off the camera...I would have fully flipped off your whole viewership and not even realized I was doing so. 😆 Is that Lori's little boy at the end there? He's super handsome. 😍
Bear has always had a very strong strike, but he got me in a spot that's not super sensitive so it didn't hurt... Yes, that little boy is #2. He's super cool.
#2 is a stunning little lad! Did any of those bites bruise? I have never been bitten by any of my snakes before, but every single one of those bites on me would have left tiny little teeth marks, but MASSIVE bruises on my arms.
@@amybentley1291 Yes actually, Bear bites really hard for his size and after 48 hours there was a small bruise where he bit. You can actually see it in this video if you look at my arm during the main narration part that I shot 3 days after taking the bites. I didn't notice it until later that day so it wasn't mentioned in the video but there definitely is a small bruise
This was brilliant! I’ve seen people showing defensive bites but never on food response, you stayed so calm very well put togther bob and Kent 🤟
i love your videos man keep up the great work and its criminal you dont have more subs
Thanks so much! The channel is growing steadily, it's just still new but I appreciate that support 🙂
I'm so glad I found your channel Bob. I've been keeping up with your current stuff but when this popped up for my search I knew I wanted to watch your take on it. My BP is 2mo old and has only been with me a week so he still jittery and I wanted to know what to expect if the worst happened.
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, welcome to the channel!
@@GreenRoomPythons wow, thanks for response! In fact I had a socializing session right after I watched this vid and it could not have gone better. One of the main things I took away from this is not to be timid or show fear since they pick up on that. I picked up his hide and scooped him out in 1 swift motion. Yesterday he was a ball...today..he explored my whole arm! It was night and day difference! I dident want to put him up but I know we're only supposed to handle them 30min at a time🥺
My hog nose bit me the other day. And he had the audacity to give me the stink eye through the tank after
😄
Bob you have THE BEST ball python content on youtube keep it on!
Say hi to Kent for me lol
BIG shout out from Israel ❤
Thanks so much Daniel! I appreciate the encouragement. Glad you're enjoying the content
Interesting topic for sure! My first snake bite happened 4 years after working with and keeping snakes! It was my baby jungle carpet python, and I was working on desensitizing to handling…it was a prickly pinch with a kick, not a food response bite, mind you, just a defensive one. I dreaded bites for so long…😅he’s doing better these days, and it’s a good thing because he’s growing pretty quickly. Mostly now, I’m getting mock strikes, or nose bumps…still, I’m cautious!
That's very polite of a snake that will mock strike instead of actually bite
This is so interesting! Super happy I came across your videos. So much fun to watch! 😊
Thanks so much Jenna! I'm glad you're enjoying them :-)
Our python we have had for a week now is our first snake. We had her out the day before her normal feeding day and she was fine for about 15- 20 minutes but then she struck at my 9 year old daughter face but she didn't get her. I wasn't sure if it was her being hungry or if maybe she got a strong smell of one of our cats and got defensive. We love having her here so we are here to learn with her lol. Thank you Bob for all your great content and information.
That sounds like it was probably a defensive strike which often happens with new snakes. The smell of cats would not have triggered it. It's usually movement or something directly in front of the snake's face that makes them nervous.
This one of the better videos I’ve ever seen. I have been trying for years to explain to non snake folks that I’d rather be bitten by a snake vs say a dog or even scratched by a cat, because it’s largely painless, medium snakes of course! Great job!!!
Thanks so much Michael, I appreciate the kind words. Glad you liked the video!
thank you so much for this video, right down to the facts in that calm manner, very much appreciated!
your channel actually makes me seriously think about maybe getting a snake, i really enjoy seeing your snakes and you interacting and them just being snakes in their human's home 😊🐍💕
Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying the channel!
Man, it's so crazy that UA-cam would give you trouble for showing your bitemark from Bear, yet they allow some of the most inappropriate of ads.
Awesome video btw :)
I'll bet this has helped so many people! It was actually a video of Emily from Snake Discovery getting bitten by their snakes that made me brave enough to get a snake. I'd wanted one for so long but I was absolutely terrified of bites, then I stumbled on that video and I was like "okay, alright, that doesn't look terrible, I can do this" and got a snake not too long after. I've been tagged a few times and it was not, in fact, terrible haha
I just got my first bite after nearly a year of keeping snakes on Friday. It wasn't painful and was my fault; I dropped Zeus' feeder by accident inside his tank and without thinking reached in front of him to pick it up with the tongs and the heat of my hand attracted him and he struck but released almost immediately when he realized I wasn't food. He's struck at me once before when I first got him, but it was a fear strike (I startled him) and it was with a closed mouth.
For me, the worst part of a snake bite is the jump factor - they strike fast and if you're not paying attention to body language, it takes you by surprise. The pain, as you said, is pretty negligible but that speedy strike gets me every time.
Thank you for showing those of us who may be afraid of getting bit that it's really not much to write home about and for explaining rodent-type bites are much worse. Heck, even puppy bites hurt worse, and for longer, than a snake bite and most people laugh those bites off.
The worst thing about puppies is they don't know how hard they're supposed to bite when they're playing 😄
I'm glad your snake bite wasn't too traumatic for you
Cool vid..thanks.
I love sharing my living space with a genuinely wild creature
You’re a much braver person than I am, and it looks like you’ve inspired Kent to live dangerously 😉 I can’t wait to see which act of rebellion he goes through with. I’m going with hand in lukewarm soup 😅
He really seems up for the soup challenge
Fantastic! I’m showing this to my daughter, we just got a juvenile ball and my daughter(9)is nervous about this.
Oh great, I hope it helps!
I always, always clean my hands with alcohol before picking up a snake. Alcohol tends to remove any smell on the hands that might cause a snake to bite.
This is my alt account on my PC, I follow you on 2 accounts now! But I have watched numerous videos on UA-cam about various things I need to know about Pythons. This is a great informational piece and I respect you for this! But yes I have also been curious about being bit because I am sure it is going to happen one day and I just figured to remain calm and let her do her thing until she realizes she cant eat me!
Thanks for the follows! I'd say, if it's a food bite you'll want to have a plan of action because sometimes they're so into food mode that it takes them a very long time to realize they have something in their mouth they can't actually eat 😄
@@GreenRoomPythons yep! Got a spray bottle with water in it by her enclosure.
So far out of my collection (ranging from small ball pythons, to mid-size rat snakes, to 6' BRB, to 9' superdwarf adult) I've been bitten a handful of times defensively (only by the BRB, who is very nippy and not well socialized), and the rest were food related.
As far as pain, yep agreed there's pretty much none, the startle/surprise factor is the worst part. There may be some ache afterwards depending on where they get you. If I get hit on the soft parts of my hand and arm, wash and dry it and you're done. The bony parts like fingers or wrist might have aches aftwards due to there being a ton of nerve connections and a deep gentle soreness if they hit a bone. But overall even then it's pretty harmless. Snake teeth are designed to grab/catch and hold, they don't cut/sheer/crush or anything - just hold and prevent escape while the snake does it's work with the rest of its body.
My worst bite was the retic, and she held onto me like she was going to wrap. I didn't have a water bottle handy, so I did the only thing that made sense to me at the time: I used my free hand to very gently grab behind the back of her head. My thought process was only to try and maintain some control so that (as a big snake) if she started to really wrap and twist she wouldn't rip her teeth out of my skin.
Surprisingly, as soon as she felt my hand wrap around her neck behind the head she immediately let go and tried to get away - so I released her and assisted getting her to a comfortable perch.
I'm not keen on trying a repeat event to see if it works regularly, but it's possibly something to do if you don't have alcohol or a water bottle handy.
That might be the same theory behind the tail chewing trick, it just made the snake wonder what's going on back there and they released :-)
this!!! this is what I keep telling people, whenever I get someone brave enough to try holding on my babies or is considering getting one- YOU are leading the interaction, and whatever emotions you bring into the space, your snake is going to pick up on. a nervous handler will result in a nervous, possibly defensive, snake. I could go on forever tbh but thanks for this video! I've only been bit by a brb and a corn snake so far, hoping to keep it that way lol
Good points, glad you liked the video!
Awesome timing took my first "bite" just last week. I have been keeping ball pythons for 2 years in November and I picked up 6 new snakes for Christmas for myself ( I don't believe in pets as Christmas presents but we used a Christmas bonus to buy them lol ) well was cleaning before feed day like I do with my older snakes and didn't realize the food drive on the one girl. She didn't wrap was a quick bite and release and her looking away like yuck that wasn't a mouse. Now no more fear of a bite.
That's great, congrats on those new snakes!
Dude. My parakeet frickin’ HURTS.
Thank you for the continued education....I have a juvie female high white pie the size of Bear...
That's great, glad you're enjoying the videos!
An interesting video, and a surprising result, to us at least. The BP bite marks looked the most impressive. We were expecting that honour to go to the black head.
That's exactly what I was expecting as well. I was definitely surprised by the results!
Thank you for this video. I got an open mouth tap from my young ball python while I was helping him with stuck shed. He was just done being messed with. There was a tiny bit of blood where the teeth hit but it didn't hurt at all. I've been bitten and injured way more by pet cats and dogs than I ever have by any of my snakes.
Snakes are pretty harmless. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for this, one of my newest adult ball python almost bitten me two days ago, when I feed him. Now I know what to do if it does happen.
Hey Bob, when we got our boa constrictor Bowie, he had been mistreated and was extremely reactivate and untrusting and he was 7 years old so very strong, and I took afewbites off of him those early days and even he's bite was morelia being punched than bit!
Nowadays though Bowie is more like how Mia was I don't know how if get him to bite me now, he's the loveliest happiest boy !!
Great vid Bob thanks 😊
That's great, sounds like you turned him around. That's always nice to see. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@GreenRoomPythons thankyou dude, I love how you reply to your viewers ❤️ we have pics and vids of our little guys on our other chanel let's keep snakes. We are father and daughter keepers in the UK. We are rubbish at making vids though so it's literally just a few pics and shorts of our boa, 3x royal pythons and a corn. Just incase you get a chance!
We are learning tons off of you and Kevin @nerd. We are students not experts but we love our snakes to bits.
Anyway thanks again and hope you have a lively weekend x
*lovely
@@billandlilldostuff8626 Very cool, I'll check it out when I get a chance!
When I first got my ball python, a lot of my friends and family were concerned about her biting me. It helped to explain to them that even if she were to bite, the damage would be far less than my dog or cat. Pythons don’t kill by biting, and they don’t chew or rip into their prey, so their jaws are comparatively pretty weak and fragile. Their teeth and mouth exist to hold prey still during constriction, and to walk it back into their throat.
Luckily I’ve only been bitten by my girl once, and to be honest, the worst part was just the shock of it happening. Kind of like a jumpscare. It barely broke skin- I actually compared it to a scratch on my other hand my cat had accidentally given me while playing, and the cat scratch was deeper.
I showed this video to my family and it really helped them understand and be a little less scared of my snake. Honestly, your whole channel has been an invaluable resource not only for me, but for my snake-fearing family that is slowly but surely coming around to these awesome critters!
I got bit by a rainbow boa at an expo. It bled but I didn't feel pain for longer than a few seconds. Honestly the adrenaline from being surprised was worse than the bite. (but also adrenaline makes you feel pain less)
Also...
"Fish would be ok to get bit by."
_laughs in any gar species_
Yes the startle is always worse then the bite itself from a small snake
like the idea of a water bottle over the tail bite..aww I'm surprised bear bit you.he always seems so chill.guess he was in food mode ? n were do you purchase f-10?
I definitely had to work to get Bear to bite me. I buy f10 on Amazon, but they usually don't have it available in the United States. Chlorhexidine is a good substitute
I love watching your videos
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoy them
@@GreenRoomPythons u help me out a lot thanks for your knowledge.
Eko trying to drag you into the hide cracked me up 😂
Recently got my first (pet) snake bite when I fumbled the rat and he went for my hand instead- got my index finger, wrapped, and held on. He's maybe half the size of Bear, but that finger bite hurt !
Not badly, but I guess my body thought I had been attacked by a wild animal, because I nearly fainted and had sweats/chills after I got him to disengage...😅 As if that would be a helpful response if I actually was in danger. The psychological reaction was definitely much worse than the bite itself... I'm just glad he still took the rat after lol
The danger with animal bites is bacteria...so if you are younger and healthy it is usually no issue, but if you are immunocompromised including a more heavy drinker of alcohol then there could be an issue....you are introducing bacteria to your bloodstream.
Anti bac soap and peroxide do wonders though ❤
😂 you are fantastic, i keep fahaka puffer and my son used to keep pirhanas (actually one made a dash for my finger when i held my hand on the rim on the aquarium, just got it away in time- that was a superfast attack (the fish was new and guessing it was stressed) they don't do anything when i cleaned the tank.
Fahakas get quite large (giant puffer) and can easily cut a finger off.
I don't have a snake though 😊
(Sorry didn't mean to write so much, just had a laugh. I keep normal fish too)
Kudos for not flipping us of when showing us the battle wounds on your middle finger
I wish I had thought of a water bottle. I just got bit by my 13 year old ball python for the first time ever. It was definitely a food bite and I've already forgiven her. Haha. It did take an extra person to help unwrap her while I unhooked her teeth. While the teeth marks do not hurt at all, she had two of my fingers squeezed together and I have some pretty good bruising across my knuckles and top of my hand. Very informative video though! Thank you!
Glad you survived! :-)
Great video great view pets reptile snakes.
Happy Christmas
Glad you liked it!
Do snakes not have harmful bacteria that can get in the wound when they bite?
Nope, they're pretty clean. I always use a antibacterial wipe but because that's just good practice but their mouths are very clean.
Great video. Do blood python/borneo short tails next!😉
😄
Got a baby hypo Mojave and she is the biteyiest thing I’ve ever seen. My daughter won’t touch her. I get her out every day or two for 10-45 min. She eats every 5-7 days, but anything moves in front of her and she attacks. I try to mimick branches with my hands while I’m holding her and it’s impossible. I know it’s defensive, but zero improvement, maybe even worse by the week so far. It’s only been 3 weeks though. Any advice?
I have a number of videos that talk about how to socialize snakes. There's a good chance that taking the snake out and holding it every day is stressing it out more. Check out those videos, and you'll see some ways that you can acclimate the snake to your presence without handling it
@@GreenRoomPythonsthank you. I will look for those videos this evening. I’m the type that doesn’t give up. But I am also smart enough to know that sometimes you can only do so much. I’ll keep trying and I appreciate your work that you do for the snake community.
You suffer for your art, Bob. Well, only a little, but your willingness to do that is still commendable. It's a good job you don't keep lions, though!
Snakes are an easy animal to do this kind of video with. Lions would be a different story 😄
I just got my first ball python last week He's a enchi morph I'm 14 And it's my first reptile And he still has not Striked me And he's very cute thank you for these videos👍✨
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, congratulations on your first snake!
My bp strikes at me a lot. She hasn’t latched on yet but she has made contact with my hand. Normally it’s when I’m increasing humidity levels in her enclosure or turning over the hygrometers she knocks over. She’s very skiddish so I assume that’s why she does that. Any ideas how to fix it?
Those are defensive strikes. Your snake just needs to build confidence and get used to your presence around their enclosure. I have some videos on socializing/taming snakes that will help.
@@GreenRoomPythons due to lack of space until I move in April I set her enclosure up directly behind my PC setup. I sit in front of her enclosure for a few hours a day just kind of handing out when she’s out and about. She has toned down the striking unless I pull her hide off and wake her up, which I don’t do very often. Thanks for the advice!
Wait, teeth on the roof of their mouths too?! I've never heard that before. I actually learn things from this channel! Lol
My ball Python has not bitten me ….yet. It’s nice to know what it’s like if it happens. Thank you for being the fall guy. 😂
“You don’t wanna get bit by a ferret.” No, no you don’t. I used to work with ferrets, among another animals, and I got bit by one and when I tell you that ferret clamped down, he REALLY clamped and held on for dear life. Hurt like hell.
Yeah those guys are cute but they are bad news if they bite
Currently have 3 carpet sharks and a banana ball. Ferret bites HURT!
❤ you f'ing awesome doing this bite video 😮 I just got a black head lavender albino female 6 months old so I'm new had all kinds of reptiles but not snaked❤I love this snake I went to per store the other day and I'm going back to get her a roommate bc this other female snake is so friendly I can't help but rescue it from petco ❤jk it looks healthy and happy but I seems so interested in ppl it seems like it needs us. Me my wife our snake and kids😂
Only bite I have received sofar is from my corn snake and it was a defensive bite. I have watched my adult ball bit his food. You do have to watch their intentions. I have been hand feeding my hognose, he won't eat weekly unless I hold him.
That's pretty funny that he only eats when he's in your hand. I guess that counts his hand feeding 😄
Great stuff! 👍
The worst bite (well bites) I've gotten was 8 in a row on the knee from a massive, egg bound, Spider ball who was dropped off at the rescue I work at, and even then it only hurt when I broke a sweat and stung a bit, I compare them to paper cuts
That's a lot of strikes at one time
My late Cali king was a very food loving 🐍 and regularly confused my hand with food. Even full grown she would rarely draw blood and it at most felt like somone rubed sandpaper on me. Never was scared to handle her or anything though it was minor at best
Do you think ball Pythons could get splinters from their bedding? (For example pine bark or Douglas fir bark)
I doubt it but I have never used either of those
Is it often a closed mouth mock bite? Squishy does that as a warning
Yes sometimes a defensive snake will do a bluf strike. It's not super common with ball pythons but they'll do it occasionally
Thank you for this video. I have a 6yo and I'm putting my hand in the enclosure everyday. Moving stuff around to see her reaction and she moves around a lot. She's gotten used to sticking her head out of her hide and kinda look around. If I put my hand in the enclosure or on the outside she comes up to me. Because she's an adult I've been a lil scared of her bite. My husband handles her just fine. I have yet to actually pick her up myself. Even tho she is used to being handled.
My 2 year old female ball python is an agresive eater. Last month for some reason she bit my pinky finger instead of the rat when I was feeding her. I had the rat on tongs but she still went for my finger. It hurt a little and left marks but no blood.
I believe a snake bit of this proportion is probably comparable to being scratched by your cat. It opens the skin a tiny bit, it draws a little blood but it doesn't really do anything.
This could lend itself to an amusing video come the next full moon. Ok, genre appropriation perhaps, but could have some fun with Kent as a were-python!
Genre crossover would be fun 😄
I remember a few years ago I got bit by Young ball python when I was feeding it and I was using some feeding tongues that I should never use cuz the snake miss the mouse and bit my hand instead at least he didn't coil it up but I feel like a bunch small of needles poking in my skin
Long feeding tongues are important to use when feeding ;-)
Yep I know that now
The fear hurts more than the bite.
Yes it does!
The first time we tried to feed our new ball python my sibling dropped the mouse and decided "I'll reach in and grab it", the little baby of course, launched out and got stuck on her hand so we had to remove the snake child and it was really funny
Yeah that's a pretty common mistake 😉
i've been mia i know, good to see you still goin, calm dow coyote peterson lol
Good to see you on here Jbird!
@@GreenRoomPythons yeah i'm trying to figure out when i got my two accounts mixed up lol, oh well, glad you remembered lol
The first time I saw a snake biting video I pretty much instantly lost my fear of being bitten by a snake. The teeth marks are so small and the damage so insignificant. I routinely have worse injuries from my foster kittens jumping on and off my lap. Literally less painful than a kitten bite or scratch.
On the next episode of Green Room Pythons, Kent takes a viper bite! No? Aww man...
He's giving that a hard pass
I totally didn't expect the ball python bite to be the worst. My money was on the retic. I've been bit by a bunch of baby snakes over the years but never an adult. Thankfully my carpet python is pretty chill and he has never bit me. Every once in a while if I do something that scares him or annoys him he'll bluff strike at me with his mouth closed. The last time he was in shed I was spraying down his cage with water and got him a little bit by accident. He got annoyed with me and he nailed me in the thumb with his mouth closed.
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
This is really helpful. I have two ball pythons and want to get a woma. I know they are pretty food motivated like black heads are. Their skulls and bite strength are pretty similar to black heads, right?
Yes, Womas are very similar to Blackheads but they don't get nearly as big.
A play bite from my 80lb dog destroyed one of my fingers. A split second of him trying to get his ball from my hand and it wrecked my thumb.
My ball python bit me and it absolutely did nothing.
I'm sorry that happened! Dog bites can be rough.
I'd be curious how a carpet python stacks up! My only frame of reference is defensive bites from a ball python, but food bites from a carpet python hurt quite a bit! The worst part though is when she lets go, because she doesn't unhook her teeth like I would if it was my choosing, she just kinda yanks her head off. The ball python defensive bite is something you could miss if you weren't watching though, it's really nothing at all.
Yes, the bite of a carpet python would be similar. Usually when they unhook their teeth they do it carefully but occasionally a snake will just yank their teeth off which will make it a little bit worse
The only times I’ve even been at RISK of being bitten (never actually been) was during feeding while I was using short tongs (rookie mistake)
That's a common bite scenario 😉
@@GreenRoomPythons woah two months later and still replying? haven’t seen a youtuber that active in years 😂
@@chaoscreature I still reply to my very 1st video :-)
Haha!! You can’t get with 2 miles of a Boa in food mode 😊
ETA: And noooooo! about some fish bites. I had a Flowerhorn and he tore me up at every water change. But yea-snakes bites don't even get in the Top 25 & I've been bitten by almost every animal in 6 decades.
i have so many questions about superdwarves haha, i’ve never had a snake with a feeding response like what i’ve heard about boas or superdwarves.
It's not that bad. Right now Eko is in a growth spurt so her food drive is a bit crazy, but she'll relax eventually... As a species though, they have a much higher food drive than a ball python.
@@GreenRoomPythons do you have any boas? would you recommend a SD over a boa for a step up from ball pythons?
@@ericlucci2829 I don't keep boas but I know them pretty well. They are a great snake and I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, but there are a bunch of different species of boa so figuring out which one you want based on size temperament and such is important if you go with a boa.
@@ericlucci2829 I have BP's and boas and the boas are even easier. Plus they never miss a meal. I've only been bitten by a boa once and it was because she was in food mode and in shed. She didn't latch on or wrap me, only tagged me then realized it was me. Both are wonderful! I hope this helps!
@@GreenRoomPythons yeah i do love the sun glows which i believe are bci’s so they don’t get huge. thanks bob!
i think Garet is fn with you on the chewing the tail lol
I've seen him do it, it works but probably not with every snake.
The reticulated bite was less severe than the Southern Pacific Western Rattlesnake bite for me
The presence of venom would probably make that rattlesnake bite a bit worse 😄
It really is the surprise of the bite more than the bite itself. Usually you just feel bumped into and notice some drops of blood. I think they have a bit of anticoagulant, so it bleeds slightly and then an hour later it's mostly disappeared and you've forgotten about it. I think part of it is when you're new to reptiles, you have a hard time reading their body language. Even if you've had mammal pets, it's nothing like them.
I've been bit by all my snakes at some point, and it's generally my mistake. Usually don't stick your hand in their face suddenly, and don't mess with them in food mode, and you're pretty good. My royal boy got really grumpy for like a month or so and was very defensive, I think he must have hit maturity, but he seems to have calmed down again. My Childrens does tend to bite first ask questions later, and he is faster and harder to read than my royals, but I'm getting used to him and he has the smallest head.
Yeah nobody seems particularly worried about dog and cat bites, but those are much worse. I have scars from my cat. My mom's cat would intentionally attack us, but my cat only ever did it by accident or in play. Their bites and scratches swell up and are messy tears in the skin so take a while to heal. I'm afraid to be bit by a hamster or small rodent.
There's something about taking a bite from a snake that people seem to think is really bad
@@GreenRoomPythons I think it's because they listened to Kent and think all snakes are poisonous ;)
I am thinking about getting my first ball python right now. But i was wondering whether or not these bites get infected? I don’t care if I get bitten once in a while, but I don’t feel like getting infections every time haha. Does anyone have any experience with this?
I’ve been bitten by my dog and cat in the past, as well as by many fish I had (most painful fish bite was a pacu as it just chomped a 2cm/1inch hole in my wrist) and none got infected. But I assume longer teeth, bring bacteria further underneath the skin?
I've never had an infection after a snake has bitten me. It's usually healed up the next day or 48 hours later.
@@GreenRoomPythons That’s good to hear! I have had a tropical infection once before, when I worked in an aquarium store, and it wasn’t fun since the doctors here had no clue how to treat it as they had never seen it before haha. I just discovered your channel this morning, and I’ll be coming back. Thanks for your (fast) reply, kind regards from the other side of the Atlantic 🇳🇱
