I Only Have ONE WEEK to Tame This Snake!

- This baby ball python is my biggest challenge yet in socializing snakes. She is a biter - she strikes at any heat signature. I have to ship this snake off to her new keeper next week so I only have that much time to tame her down. Its it even possible?

I am SOOOOOO excited!!! She is so awesome! And her name is Spitfire!!! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into her Bob!
Matt, that is such a great name for her!
I love that name, original, fitting, badass and cute all in one 😊. Can we have an update in a while? Curious to see how long/what it takes/if she'll get over this. 😊
@@Varenyam86 I will absolutely do updates on her! I have plenty of time to spend with her this winter. I'm always in the chats on the livestreams and definitely in the patreon zoom sessions!
@@matthewtracy8744 cool! I'll look into Patreon and hopefully see you/her there (or maybe on this channel 😇). Looking forward to it 😋
@matthewtracy8744 you got a beautiful baby and I can't wait to see/hear how it goes with her. ❤
Just so you all know, the bites are nothin, your cat, or kids will hurt you worse, just go for it. It's a lot of fun working with them as they acclimate to socialization.
She attempted to strike at the sun, she has the heart of a warrior.
Yes she does!
Imagine her attitude if she ever gets bred. (Without a ton of socialization...or even with it) 😂
warrior indigenous!!
When i bought my daughter's ball python, I worked with the breeder to pick the calmest snake within budget, and the breeder worked with him for 2 months before i brought him home, and he still tagged me every time I grabbed him for the first few weeks he was home 😅 luckily it was just cage defensiveness that he quickly learned was unnecessary. Hatchling ball pythons would be so offended to know that we think their big tough behavior is cute 🥰
This comment 🤣❤️
Yeah, some never even make an attempt to strike and others are all about the violence ;-)
Probably less like cage aggressive more not used to your scent. Remember before you the only scent he knew as "safe" was the breeders. It takes them a bit to adjust and trust a new scent.
@@ReleasedHollowYeah, my snake strikes at anyone who isn't me if they try to pick him up, if I pick him up first and then he meets a stranger then there's no defensive behavior. Pretty silly guy
I drove 3 hours to pick up a 2 year old corn snake from a breeder on MMarket, only to find when I got there that the guy had been fed the day before, and never been handled. He was a flighty bitey mess.
I bought him anyway and worked with him over three weeks, tagged me more than 15 times during that period, but he's a million times better now, no longer bites or launches himself across the room.
I doubt the breeder enjoyed their Morph Market review!
That's great, it just takes a little time and patience
My ball Python has a similar reaction to hot things! She’s never struck in self defense, but if I sit next to her enclosure with a grilled cheese or some soup, she gets right up near the glass and into strike position like she’s hunting. This was a really helpful video for trying to figure out why she suddenly starts acting weird when I eat certain things near her, I didn’t even consider that she’s probably sensing the heat coming from the food.
She's a pissy little thing. I love her. She's beautiful.
Mine was an adult, and bit neglected by the previous owner. He balled up a few times the first month , but now he does long tickly tongue flicks right on my nose. So cute.
She's making such good progress! Out of my 3 ball pythons, the hatchling from you is the most socialized and willing to come to my hand and was like that right out of his shipping box. 🐍
Aw that's great to hear!
Those hard-won pets are the most special and rewarding. My own firecracker kitty cat just passed away this past weekend. Earning her trust and building a relationship with her was a long game, and she taught me so much.
I'm so sorry for your loss
Well done for what you said about socialisation not always being about handling. The number 1 mistake people with with dog socialisation is thinking the dog has to meet everything... That's not really a good thing, it's about teaching them how to react around that situation. See another dog, meet it, yeah that's good, see 10 dogs on the walk and meet them all, not so good, now you have over excitement when it sees another dog. It's the same with people, same with anything, some ideas on might need to change because of how the species interacts, but you learn by the activity, for example if the only activity is play, you'll only learn how to play.
She’s soooo cute! I love her feisty attitude! Bindi is doing great. She’s eaten twice and is a real explorer of her enclosure, using every millimeter of it. Thanks for another amazing Ball Python, Bob!🐍❤️🐍
I'm so glad! She required a bit of work as well, but she caught on pretty quickly ;-)
I love that you named her Bindi. I had a ball python a while back named Bindi. She was an enchi lemon blast and had the most beautiful green eyes. She had some health issues and sadly passed at a pretty young age, but she was a real sweetheart. I'm glad another little sweet girl out there shares her name. ❤ Congrats again!
@@amybentley1291 Thank you!!! I was back and forth over names and the second I thought of Bindi I knew that was it. She’s doing so well and is absolutely gorgeous!!
@@GreenRoomPythons She hasn’t struck at me yet but I haven’t handled her a lot, maybe 6 or 7 times. She’s been either in she’d or just ate. I love her.
I have female that came from an amazing breeder who socialized her extensively prior to my buying her. She's is a total baby doll, unless she's in shed. Then and only then does she get wildly cantankerous. We loved the breeders dedication so much we are getting another female by them this weekend.
That's great, congrats!
I love how calm you are with your snakes. I am a NICU nurse and I handle all sizes of babies. My smallest patient was 393 grams (roughly a little over 14 oz.). At that size, a baby’s skin is incredibly fragile. I got very used to “touching without touching,” as I would tell new nurses. Obviously the babies had to be touched, and frequently. However, you also had to remember that their skin is only a few cells thick. The trick is to do what is necessary in the fastest way possible, without causing physical and mental stress to the baby. I imagine that is very similar to handling snakes, especially baby snakes!
I think it’s WONDERFUL that you care enough to put effort into doing this. Very impressed! I hope Matt and she have a beautiful relationship… you started it off right!
Thanks so much!
I love that little snake so much. She was easily my favorite from that clutch, and it's adorable how spicy she has been. She is doing so well in comparison to the last time I visited you. I'm very proud of her. Also, thanks for doing all that you do in socializing your hatchlings. All three of the snakelets I got from the Green Room are super confident little noodles. Two of them are little adventurers (troublemakers) and one just likes to sit on my shoulder or on my glasses while I go about my business. I adore them all so much.
Your three are amazing little snakes and whenever I see them I want them back! ;-)
@GreenRoomPythons YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM. Also, you should see Colin after his most recent shed. He changes so much every time. He is a handsome lad. 😍
@@amybentley1291 he had so much more gold last time I saw him
@@GreenRoomPythons and also, I'm still massively in love with both of those clowns. 😍😍 I've already named them.
@@amybentley1291 DON'T TELL ME THEIR NAMES
For some reason my sassy ball pythons don’t bother me, I can spend all the time in the world working with them. A stressed out baby boa though…I have to give myself a pep talk and sometimes a glass of wine before getting them out. 😂
They have that crazy hiss when they strike 😅
I'm happy to see this video. I have a little one, which I've had for about a year. She also strikes at EVERYTHING. I've only recently been able to fill her water dishes without a strike attempt. Everyone says to "socialize" her, but I never got any real instructions. I've sat on the couch with her, and after allowing her to climb hand over hand, she resting in my hands almost as if in defeat, then struck at my chin when I yawned. This video gives me ideas and helps me a lot.
I have some other socialization videos that should help as well
This is honestly one of the best videos I've ever watched in socializing a snake that has different quirks. Thank you!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
I was given a banana ball 2 weeks ago, she is only a couple of months old and has struck at me loads. I have also noticed that she mainly strikes on heat signatures and going from dark to brighter rooms!!! Thank you for this video. It's interesting to know it's nothing that I doing wrong. ❤🍀
I'm glad this video was helpful for you!
Great video as always. I had a few snakes when i was younger and youtube had really just become a thing so there wasn't alot of info out here. I graduated and went into service and had to rehome my red tail boa and ball pythons. This year my children got themselves a pied for me for fathers day and my first thought was "i got this". I came to youtube looking simply for temperature info and found a thumbnail of you and Bear which set us on this whole new journey. Cant thank you enough for what you're doing here. New patreon member coming your way very soon
Aw that's fantastic! Congrats on your new snake and welcome to the channel!
Bob, you're so patient ❤ What a sweet little girl she is. Just feisty! I have a new baby who is super fearful. I've been spending a few minutes a day with her and waiting till she relaxes to return her to the enclosure (I've watched most of your videos). But it's been weeks and she's still so scared. You posting this was perfect timing! A nice reminder to just keep working on it and being patient with her.
I'm glad this was helpful. Best of luck with yours!
What a precious little girl!!
😃
My female Sonoran pure boa was an absolute chainsaw when she showed up after getting her through morph market. She was from a very well-known breeder and a well-known line from Vin Russo but she was a chainsaw she struck it everything she hissed anytime she saw movement and I have some very funny videos of her doing so. I think what people don't realize sometimes is that taming down a snake is what's best for them not just you. It calms them down they're not terrified all the time they don't hurt themselves from striking at glass or something like that and they eat better and everything else. That same snake is now one of my friendliest and sometimes even climbs out of the enclosure to say hi even when she knows there's no food. So for anyone who has a snake that's like this all is not lost! :) Kevin Mcurley also has great vids about taming snakes and other reptiles, and "threads of trust" helped me become a much better keeper/tamer!
Got my first ball python the other day. I've kept reptiles for 14 years but she's my first snake. I've wanted one since I can remember, but as a kid my mom was terrified of them and as an adult my wife was. She changed her mind this past weekend so I finally got one. This channel has been insanely helpful. Definitely my favorite snake channel.
Congrats on your new snake! I'm glad the channel has been helpful for you
Its always rewarding having a snake settle down, especially one with this kind of instinct. Im working with a milk snake that is similar and he's doing great! Amazing job handling her, gentle yet able to test her limits without pushing them. I wish more snake keepers/breeders put this kind of effort and dedication into these creatures, so worth it.
Thanks so much. I agree, it's definitely worth it to put in the time and effort up front :-)
I noticed she has dragon whiskers like my super enchi. I really can't wait to work with her! I love the feisty ones! Lol
I'm glad you're excited! She'll see you in 2 days :-)
Great video. We socialize too, but usually over a longer period of time while we establish their feeding (e.g., 6 weeks). I suspect it's probably good for them to have a few days off between stressful interactions - but that's just a theory. We generally hold them for 15 minutes after they start to relax and explore when we socialize. Whenever I open a cage to clean or check on them, and I see them tense, they get some socialization time. I bet she is a great eater.
That's a great way to do it! Yes, she became a great eater after she stopped being fearful of her food 😅
I have the same „kind“ of snake. I socialized her to the point that she doesn’t strike at me. And she is calm in my hands, but as soon she sees a heatsignature, she strikes. She also looks like your snake. Mine is a one year old Pastell female.
Aw, love to see her progress! What thoughtfulness you put into socializing her :)
Thanks so much!
It’s incredibly nice to see someone willing to admit their limits and not risk dying purely for internet points lmao, wonderful video and what a snake haha
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
She is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your experiences!
She’s so pretty 😂 I love seeing that she’s gaining confidence everyday with consistent gentle handling.
Thanks! Yep she's doing great
Thanks for doing this video, Bob! You may recall that I received her sister (#7) back in August and she was pretty hissy at first, but I followed your guidance from a bunch of your videos and she has such a sweet, relaxed disposition now during handling sessions. The progress you have made with that girl is outstanding and I'll bet it won't be long before she settles into her sweet, relaxed personality, too. Outstanding work, Bob, and thanks again for the amazing snake!
I'm so glad she is doing well! Your snake would be from a different clutch but I believe they have the same papa :-)
@@GreenRoomPythons oh ok, I thought Lucille was that little girl’s mama, too 😂
Look forward to all your videos brother! Absolutely one of my favorite people on here.
Thank you so much, I appreciate that!
Interesting! I just got my first snakes 2 weeks ago and just got bit the day before yesterday 😅(my bad, she turned out to be hungry). I just tried to handle her but as a new snake mom, I am a tad impressed/concerned/afraid of them (although I already felt their bite isn't that painful, it's more the scare of it happening). It's really cool to see you getting her relaxt. I will take note and look at the other videos and hopefully get the girls more socialized 😊. Thanks for this, appreciate your 'guidance' 🙏🏻
Also, shirtless Kent made me giggle. 😂
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! If you got a food response bite, that's different than a defensive bite. Food response is always just an accident and socialization doesn't help with that as much, but all these techniques are helpful so I'm sure you're doing the right thing
@@GreenRoomPythons I'm thinking it was something in between. She's the shy one out of the two females. I've handled her before without problems, but apparently she followed me while I cleaned her terrarium and lunged at me a few times. I got her to settle a bit but when I held her before getting her back in, she unexpectedly bit me (I wasn't paying attention). The week before she didn't want to eat. I gave her a mouse after that incident (which was still my fault in the end). She immediately took it so she definitely was hungry. Its been a few days since and I handled her a bit after watching your vid. She was very tense and grabbed on tight but she did calm down quite a bit eventually. Unfortunately not 100% but hey, learning and baby steps, right?
I saw your video on snake proofed rooms which is something I’ve wanted to do for quite sometime now as I have 3 BP’s. Just wanted to say hello, I love your videos so far and am learning new things even though I’ve had my snakes for over 5 yrs now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! It’s also nice to see and chat with a fellow snake lover! 🐍❤
That's great, welcome to the channel! I'm glad you're enjoying the :-)
Hi bob new to the channel and LOVE it. I apologize if i missed it but what morphs does this beautiful lil snake have?
I'm glad you're enjoying the channel! That little girl is a super orange dream firefly
We just picked up a boy who looks just like her at a pet shop because they could not sell him and he was locked up in the back.. We are always on the look out for things like this so they are not destroyed. He had the same behavior. 2 months in and we are actually making progress.
That's great!
Wow. you are an angel for animals. That´s wonderful!
This was a really good video! It showed all kinds of information
How snakes have different personalities and how they can have bad days or times just like we can. Very cool! ❤❤
This was a fantastic video! I really like seeing tough snakes come around and learn not to be so fearful.
I loved watching her improve. And it seemed to me that on the next to last day that she was just grumpy as heck - Which makes sense since she was in shed the next day.
You did so many smart things that I really enjoyed seeing, especially when you set her down with all the warm items. That was a brilliant! Thank you for this ❤
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
Oh Bob. I enjoy them ALL. 👏❤️🐍😁
🙌🏼 Another great video 💯🤩❤️ I absolutely love your videos 😍 that was such a cute baby 🐍🥰 it’s so nice of you to work with her & share with us 💚😍💚
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
Honestly it's great that you're working with them so adamantly while they're young. My friend's bp wasn't handled much as a baby and now she's a big girl and super feisty. My friend has life-long experience with snakes and is scared of her. I, on the other hand, lucked tf out. I picked out a juvenile bp because he was cute and he just happened to have the best personality imaginable. In a year of owning him, he has never once struck or even hissed at me and genuinely loves to come out and hang with me. Just an absolute cutie and basically a dog in a snake body.
The slow-mo bite was cute and hilarious.
yes her checking out things on her own .better than it be presented to her ..good work Bob. good job !!
Thanks Ava!
lol Kens "Dang it" was great
My new spotted python i mentioned other week to you is a "Miss with attitude" too. If i look at her wrong or my shadow farts or something she's off striking 😂. Plenty of work ahead with her
Yes, those tiny snakes have figured out how to defend themselves ;-)
I loved this kind of video. watching you real time with patience and technique was refreshing!
Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
this is SUCH a helpful video. i have a hatchling that's like this. being a new BP keeper (but a long time reptile keeper) i didn't have the best idea how to go about it, because my girl is strike first ask questions later. and most socializing videos don't cover a BP that is as bitey as this. as a new owner, frantic striking is a little freaky, but it's gonna be a process both me and her are gonna learn! thank you so much for this video!
I'm glad that video was helpful for you, good luck with your snake!
Great and informative video bro awesome snake and thanks for sharing
Thanks so much!
Before i knew better i put a red light on my ball, he struck at the light over and over i took it out after only about 10mins and never used it again. He was always so confident and relaxed, thats the only time he has ever done anything like it.
most of those strikes and such around 19:30 are just her being pouty, no real harm intended lol.
Just recently found your channel, I commented on your last chat. Getting a dwarf retic from ROR. Been combing over your videos and am loving it 🤙🏻
Congrats on the new snake!
She is super beautiful and I loved this video💛 Is she a pastel enchi or something else makes her so super bright colored😊?
Thank you, she's an orange dream firefly
@@GreenRoomPythons big thank you for the reply!😃
she such a pretty lil girl !and seems she slowly getting much better..she strikes that coffee cup often tho 😅🐍
You're so mindful & good with them.
And I've learned that ball pythons are obviously tea fans.
Thank you!
I just got to meet a 2 week old ball python, and it was the sweetest thing I even got to hold it at a pet store.I have done tons of research over ball pythons and have been really wanting one the only thing stopping my from getting one is my dad doesn't like snakes and I'm not 18 so I can really buy one
I love your channel great content. as someone who values socialization and enrichment I thought this video was 10/10 great. Some snakes take longer to socialize than others but amazing work with this girl.☺
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words!
@@GreenRoomPythons you are welcome!
I love her attitude, haha. I just had to comment though and thank you so much for your videos. I just got my Hecate on Wednesday and I’m super excited because she just ate her first frozen fuzzy. Her temperament is very calm but timid but I’m thankful she has a good appetite, haha. I would not have been brave enough to feed her without your channel and a ton of research.
That's fantastic, congratulations!
Ooooh i had an adult female i bought that was like this. She also had a severe wobble that i wasnt told about. She will not be used for breeding, and all she needed was a bit of handling. Precious girl just needed some patience.
This came at such a funny and perfect time! I just got a new girl last weekend from an expo and she is a NASTY little gremlin lol. I open her enclosure and she comes creeping out of her hiding spots and just watches my every movement. I picked up her Thermometer and she tried striking at me. I went to add some water to help her humidity and she tried striking at me again. She is such a grumpy little gremlin haha. I found out that her sister who was bought from the expo as well is also really sassy xD. I've got my work cut out for me but this gives me hope :).
Best of luck, it just takes a little patience :-)
@GreenRoomPythons thanks Bob! :). I'll definitely do what I've got to to help her feel comfortable and safe :)
I've never seen the coffee cup idea before. That's really interesting honestly, maybe I should give that a go with the snakes I work with. Loving this channel!
That up there with of your best joke
Kent why shirt off?
Not to have heat signature.
Hahaahaa
😉😉
Day 6 pm.. she thought about if she wanted to bite you.. and FIRMLY decided yes.. she in fact did want to lol
Yes she did!
Quite the feisty noodle! Reminds me of Dr Joan Of Arc No, who doesn't even need a heat signature to strike at one's beverage. Not long ago she struck at a chilled can of Budweiser!
😅😅
I'd be in bite mode too if you woke me up at 9:30 at night 🤣🤣🤣
Right? ;-)
What a creative and unique idea for desentisation in such a timid snake
Thank you!
It’s the Little info like not tapping tail that makes me realize things I do wrong! Every video I get something or things!
Learning stuff is cool right? I love learning new things :-)
She is gorgeous ❤❤❤
She like I'm too striking to not be striking. 😂😂😂
'Don't do that, don't do that, don't do that' 😆🤣
Hey Bob. What kind of morph Ball Python is that baby. I know you mentioned clown but was wondering if there was anything else in her genes Very beautiful.
Not clown at all. She is an orange dream enchi firefly if I remember right.
Thank you so much buddy😊
Ive been working with my bredls python for a couple weeks now. Hes gotten much better and im finally able to have him out without him being defensive. Handling is still a little bit much for him but were getting there.
Hes an adult tho so im a little less excited to have him chew on me than a baby ball python
Yep, that's a more significant bite for sure ;-)
Rub that belly! I’m telling you it works, I’ve tamed all my hatchlings this way.
That's great!
I massage my snakes too
11:50 Hey!! There’s me!
There you are!
I drove two hours to pick up a ivory male hatchling and he's exactly the same! He strikes at everything. I'm gonna leave him for a week, I'm going to follow your advise and work with him. I'm determined! But I'm ready to get my feelings hurt 😂
Congrats on the new snake!
I have a young male that’s full of hate & violence too. He arrived to me at about a month & half, we’ve evolved from him striking the wall of his enclosure every time he sees me to only striking at me once on feeding day. It definitely is a patience process.
Yes it is!
Clint did a video about bringing a lizard outside, where it would freak out. Apparently lizards can see the uv spectrum and objects, and hairless apes, look different to them. It looks like she is defensively striking at things moving towards her. This is a snake that would have better than average odds of surviving in the wild.
Yes she has no problem defending herself 😅
Is it possible that some snakes may have Vision issues? Therefore they will strike at everything because they can't see very well.
Pythons don't rely on their vision as much anyway. It's more about their heat pits and their Jacobson's organ. Pythons that are born without eyes tend to strike as accurately as snakes that have eyes.
Kent reminds me of Dom Deluise, and it's awesome.
Dom Deluise was great!
Bob, i would love to see a video on your learning curve socializing Handsome Dan as opposed to ball pythons! Both species have such drastically different temperaments!
Absolutely awesome vid / training session 👍🏻 I enjoyed every second and learned a few things in the process .. thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it!
Some snakes are just different when being handled during day or during night. I feel like some snakes are more sensitive towards being taken out of their enclosure during a time they'd not be out normally (because they'd more likely end up as someones food in nature). Also, with some snakes it makes a difference when being interacted with during the time of day they usually get fed. Like my rhino ratsnake who gets fed at night, thinking "threat or food?" during day and "foOOD?!" during night.
Yes, definitely!
That sounds totally right. I have a baby ball python (4 months old) that thankfully was already well socialized when I got her at 2 months old. She is a really bold little girl, never curling up to a real ball, exploring everything. In the beginning I only took her out at night and she was always calm and active. But one time I took her out during day - the room was completely sunlit - and she was totally scared and peed on me.(By now I can take her out any time I want and she is fine).
Love your videos man you made me get a super Enchi ball python and he's the best I set him up in a 4 ×2×2 and he explores every night he love it !
That's fantastic, congrats on your snake!
I have a super enchi too. His name is Rodney Dangernoodle. Lol This is my girl in the vid. I wasn't going to get another ball, but look at this little fireball! Lol 😆
Great video
great seeing your videos! May try the heat arrangement thing with my snake someday (we're taking it suuuuper slow and at the moment, she's getting more OK with me just being outside of her enclosure, but she tenses whenever the door opens. I'd like her to be socialized and chill by the time she's an adult, which is a few years away)
Tensing when a door opens or anything happens in the enclosure is pretty standard. Taking it slow is great though!
Ooh she was spicy!
lmao the multiple coffee cup experience was funny 😂
I have an pastel enchi het clown that looks identical to this you're taming, and I'm having a heck of a time taming him! My male cinnamon, and my female het albino were easy to tame, but all this little guy wants to do is strike
She’s beautiful ❤ love the clean look
What was her genes ?
Thanks, orange dream firefly
Just like people, snakes are all different! And just like people who freak out any time they encounter a snake, but can learn to appreciate them and lose their fear, so can Spitfire! I’m sure she will learn to love Matt.
I have to say I am not a huge fan of the morphs (I usually like wild type), but that is one beautiful snake!
Herp socialization tutorials rock
Glad you liked this one!
Ive got a ball python whos a few years old now. She strikes at reflections, and the door knob.
I’m sure Kent was far away from the room when this was happening 🤣🤣😂😂
He was out!
I also believe they can recognize the different heat signatures ok her keeps. For example I can walk to their enclosures and they will seem to react to me more often then my wife. So they 100% start to pair both heat signature and sent with different people. They are way smarter then people give them credit for.
Yes they definitely can tell the difference between their keeper and other people :-)
Love the bit on venomous snakes!
thank you because I was scared I think I'm comfortable now
“Whoopsie daisy!” 😂😂😂
those are adorabe babies.
Thank you!
