  • World renowned figure skating choreographer David Wilson joins Asher and Dylan to break down some of his most famous skates. He talks about helping Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir with their Roxanne and Latch programs, about building Yuna Kim's repertoire before her famous James Bond short, as well as Yuzuru Hanyu's intense need to skate to Romeo and Juliet at Sochi 2014.

    Yuna, Yuzu, and Tessa/Scott... all absolute legends in their respective categories. And the man behind some of the most infamous and iconic routines in skating.

    Honestly, no one could pull off a David Wilson program better than Yuna. This is why she is his muse. I mean just look at her very abstract and nuanced interpretation of Gershwin and KOTV. If it were someone else it would've been a disaster. Even her Adios Nonino was very nuanced and different from what one wouldve expected from a) a tango b) an Olympic program c) an interpretation of Adios Nonino but has now become appreciated by skating fans.

    12:30 when he said he got a long letter from yuzuru and I heard his explanation I burst into laughter. I was shaking my head because it's just a spitting image of yuzuru! It's just so yuzuru! If he's determined to do something, he will stop at NOTHING until he gets it. Good Lord HAHAHHA

    David Wilson and Yuna are perfect match. The Lark Ascending is one of the most beautiful program and Yuna herself admitted it was difficult and complex...

    The Notte Stellata is so beautiful I loved it. ♥

    As David says, NDP and R&J were done at a time when Yuzuru was still very young & still maturing as a skater and artist. The best bit of that story is the young Yuzuru's fierce determination and spirit! BUT the real magic between the 2 of them happened with The Swan, Haru yo Koi, and Crystal Memories - beautiful music, gorgeous gorgeous choreo by David, and Yuzuru's unique interpretation, style, musicality, and expression - all 3 programmes are divine! I do hope David and Yuzuru continue to work together despite David's traumatic memory of having to choreograph R&J for Yuzuru lol!
    Edit: surprised Javi (2 x World Champ 7 x Euro champ, Oly Bronze) and his programmes weren't discussed more?!

    I can’t believe they didn’t touch on David’s work with Javier Fernandez throughout his time at the Cricket Club and even till now. Javi had iconic skates too and he’s 7 time European champion!!!

      It's pretty standard to talk about about Olympic champions like Yuna Kim, Yuzuru Hanyu, Virtue/Moir. But I do find it disappointing that they don't talk about the other skaters who David Wilson choreographed for. Javier may not be Olympic champion, but he is definitely a champion skater, and one of the best of the men's field. Just because a skater isn't an Olympic champion doesn't mean they don't deserve to be pushed aside for the more obvious, famous skaters, guys.

I mean Yuna's 2013 Worlds and 2014 Sochi Olympics performance so detailed steps and choreography just one of a kind. Thanks for this :)

    OMG! Notte Stellata is one of my favourite ice skating performances of all times and now I learned that it was choreographed by David Wilson. Thank you guys!
    I guess it is easy to impress the audience with jumps but mesmerising them with only two of them, is being a master at this game. Notte Stellata did not look like skating, it looked like Yuzuru becoming the Swan. I must have watched it at least 20 times, never seizing to LOVE it from the beginning to the end. Of course this is my personal experience and connection but I remember the BBC commentator saying that it was one of the best gala performances she has ever seen, so that means something :)

    Why not ask him about his work with Javier Fernandez??? As a OG Bronze medalist, 2x World champion, 7x European champion you'd think he would be worth a mention. Afterall David was kind of like his main choreographer through Javi's years at Cricket and created some of his most famous programmes 😯

    No wonder Yuzu's Notre Dame de Paris and R&J 2;0 were lackluster, David had no desire to even choreograph them :S

    • @eggizgud
      @eggizgud 3 роки тому +7

      I thought it was Yuzuru's capacity that was not fully developed yet. His stamina was still poor. The choreography fitted the music really well. I love those little touches like the hop and skips during transitions, which really brought out the musical rhythms.

    • @HelTra91
      @HelTra91 3 роки тому +4

      @@eggizgud the choreography was still lacking, especially Notre Dame de Paris. Even when he skated it as a gala with full stamina it wasn't anything special. Yuzu did what he could with what he was given though. I kind of wished David had said no to R&J so that Yuzu would have left him earlier and found someone more willing to work with him. The choreo step sequence was nice though, but only because Yuzu delivers it so well. David has choreographed some amazing programs don't get me wrong, it's just sad none of those were for Yuzu.
