What I don't get is if someone is clearly the best in their event but just happens to have a bad day they are off the team? If Sydney Mclaughlin pulled a hamstring and couldn't finish the 400 hurdles would she be automatically out of the Olympics even if it was a mild pull and she'd be fine come Olympic time? Can they make exceptions, or is it completely unforgiving

I think in the US, you are sorry out of luck. In some other federations, coaches or “national selectors” make the decision based on results but also other factors like you describe (some athlete has the flu or whatnot).

It’s everyone has to qualify regardless of previous experiences. Except on the women’s gymnastics team where they have qualms but they also have selectors so they can make some decisions regarding who gets to be on the core 5 or 6 and then a couple alternates.
