First off, Thank you so much for making this video. This is something I really struggled with for a while, and I eventually came to realize the value of cosplaying underrated characters on my own, but there's plenty of people out there who are struggling with this who could really use this! I hope you don't mind me responding to your points with my own experiences:
    1. This is 100% true. I cosplay Saiyuki which is this underrated anime from 20 years ago, but all the fans I've met are just super passionate over it. I also cosplay Natsume, from Natsume Yuujinchou and Akura-ou from Kamisama Kiss, both of which hardly get recognized, but the ones that do just get so excited. I even had people scream when they saw me! Those small moments are really rewarding. It's as you said, some of these people probably never thought they'd ever get a chance to see anyone cosplay these characters IRL. I've even made a few good cosplay friends through cosplaying these underrated anime!
    2. Also agree. Akura-ou is a cosplay that a lot of people compliment me on despite not knowing who it is or what it's from just because it looks really cool. I even made it to round 4 of an Instagram cosplay contest with Gojyo from Saiyuki and had a good handful of people promote me just because the picture looked cool. I barely scraped by but I think it's impressive considering no one knew who I was cosplaying from and I even beat out MHA cosplayer and cosplayers with way larger followings.
    3. Now this I never really thought about being an advantage before. I always thought my hodgepodge of interests and cosplay was turning people away, but this makes me kind of glad I do more of a weird variety of stuff. I think the most popular thing I cosplay is Takumi from Fire Emblem and I absolutely adore his character and love the cosplay to death, but this makes me realize I shouldn't take advantage of it!
    4. So much yes! That's always been my biggest motivation. I want to share the things I like with other people, and it's awesome when people actually discover it through you. I succeeded in getting one of my followers to watch Saiyuki and they were so happy I introduced them to it because they never knew it existed before. And another yeesss to getting more interest in series that aren't selling well. A lot of my favorite shows go unlicensed due to lack of popularity and I find it incredibly sad! Saiyuki in particular, half of the series has gone unlicensed ever since the company that originally held the rights to it went bankrupt and now some of the DVD volumes are extremely rare. The company that licensed the manga also went bankrupt in the middle of translating the series and now due to lack of demand the remainder of the series may never be officially translated in English. I really want to try and get more people interested to save the series from completely fading into obscurity.
    5. I feel like I've always done cosplay for myself. Even if I purposefully tried to do something mainstream just for the sake of it, I don't think I would feel really comfortable with it. Being passionate about the character is extremely important to me as a cosplayer, and I just don't happen to like a lot of popular or mainstream stuff. I find there's more value in my personal enjoyment of the hobby and representing what I love!
Sorry for the long comment. Thank again for making this video, I'll definitely share this with my friends!

I totally agree! I love the special connection you can create with random people who are really passionate about the same thing as you. Some of my cosplays were such a small show / game, that I wasn't even expecting someone to recognize it :D -but one person did and that was a very interesting conversation.

This video is so Important to me
This November I'm going to do a cosplay that's so obscure (both in Italy and America) and I was wondering if I should continue with this idea, but now I'm so hyped
    So thank you!

This was so validating to see! The current cosplay I’m working on is Altair from Re Creators and it’s not very common to see other people cosplaying anything from that show even though it’s only a few years old (I think the fact that it was amazon exclusive shot it in the foot but that’s a rant for another day). I’ve also wanted to start cosplaying from older shows that I grew up with and was nervous to start but I have a little more confidence now after seeing this

I've been following you about a year on IG and I've been involved in cosplay for 10 years and I just want to say how much I love your devotion to self expression. You're always trying new techniques with costumes, photography, etc. It's really inspiring and I think ppl should deviate a lot more from what they think people will like and do what they like instead. I started doing that with my cosplay after watching you and I'm so much happier

This is such a wonderfully put video. Im suprised how accurate everything you said was because Ive thought about these things for the longest time but could never put them into words. 14:45 really gets to me because I’ve seen it happen sooooooo many times to people who ive followed. The whole thing of people not wanting to do what *they* enjoy doing because they’re afraid of it not receiving well is such an easy habit to fall into when posting online. People get the idea that how many likes/follows/subscribers/viewers/whatever they get can reflect their worth which is a very warped and unhealthy mindset as is. I wish people can take what you said in your video into consideration and realize that a hobby is something *you* do for fun, not just for other people

Sorry, this is an old video and I found your channel via the Reinhard Logh maquaroon video. I don't know why, but I had you clocked as a Kaze Ki fan immediatly and then you mentioned cosplaying Gilbert. You're a hero, a real one, you have my support eternally.

yes to all of this!!! I love cosplaying more niche characters, and the instant connection you can have with someone over both loving the character is for me, so much more gratifying than someone casually liking something popular that I cosplay! Also, finding other cosplayers that cosplay the niche characters you like is so much fun!!!! thank you for this!!! (my obscure ones rn are Kate Bishop from marvel comics, nymphadora tonks from harry potter, and I’m working on Jester from critical role).
(this is turning into an essay comment but...) have you ever thought of doing a podcast in the style of something like this? I really loved the video, and a talk like this would make a great podcast, and you could expand on more topics!!!!

I appreciate all the good things you said. I definitely feel like I'm an "obscure cosplayer", and it's been an interesting road. But you touched on so much truth that I've experienced first hand as a greenhorn. Subbed here and about to go follow you on Instagram!

I love you for making this video. I was your fan before, but now I'm most definitely a big fan. When I cosplayed Himemiya Anthy the first time earlier this year, a few things like you described happened! Firstly, my friends as well as others said that it was so precious to see how happy I was to finally cosplay a character from my favourite show ever, and it made me so happy to hear. None of them had seen Utena, but still thought so. Another thing, a person I'd never met in my life came up to me and said 'but oh my god, you're Anthy!' I talked to her for over half an hour after that and even though we haven't met anywhere or talked since then it was one of the best memories I have from a con. Cosplaying characters you love rather than what's popular at the moment is the most rewarding thing.

    i’m working on a mercy (overwatch) cosplay and i have been posting some casual versions of that and whenever i post something it has so many likes and i get so many new followers.... and i love mercy, it makes me really happy to do these casual versions of her but yea i totally get discouraged of publishing my other cosplays and yea that truly sucks ;;;;

Thanks for this video! This is such an underated topic! Lately I've been thinking about creating a costume, kinda inspirated by Biblical angels but less scary, and after seeing your tutorial for Satan's wings i got motivated. Still, I'm really insecure cause I got the ideas but I don't know how people will react since it's not from any show or games...

  • @nonexistingvoid

This is exactly why I love cosplaying unpopular or less known characters.
I hardly ever cosplay a main character, but if I do, I'll pick a more unique version of it.
Unfortunately, even fans of the same fandom often have no idea who I'm supposed to look like.
I once walked around a full day and didn't see anyone who recognised my cosplay.
The next day a friend of my suddenly asked if I had cosplayed 'Kyoko' and started telling me how she loved the manga it was from and how she disliked that most people only watched the anime.
I never thought we had so much in common, because we used to only talk about the bigger hypes at that time.
Turns out we have the same taste in manga, anime, music, games, and fashion!
I never would've known if I hadn't worn that cosplay.

I often cosplay a casual Setsuka version of her.
I haven't seen anyone in my country do it.
Only the LoveMe uniform (and they didn't recognise me, because they only saw the anime)

Thank you for this! All of this is so true, since I've done multiple obscure cosplays, such as Darkest Dungeon, Hitchhiker's Guide movie and even Just Dance. The one about a shared experience is so true. Out of the tons of people who went to Dragoncon 2018, only one person correctly recognized my Just Dance cosplay, but he was incredibly happy. Just do what you love.

I try to balance doing popular things with doing more obscure things but still always things that I like. My most obscure is probably nakiami from bounen no xamd. I loved the anime and thought her design was interesting

This is such a great video! I’m a smaller cosplayer whos known in my state’s cosplay community for cosplaying from obscure sources so it’s really great seeing a larger cosplayer who does mostly obscure sources as well! I couldn’t have agreed with all of this more! :)

  • @Vanellustrades

I agree so much with this video! Some of my closest friends I have gotten because I cosplayed from something a little obscure. People in smaller fandoms have so much passion for the stuff! My most "obscure" is probably Ringo from Mawaru Penguindrum, but I really want to wear her again.

I relate to this so much! I cosplay from the video game brawlhalla currently and like no one knows it, but I’ve made a friend who likes it! I’m also pretty sure I’m the first person to cosplay the character I am going to. Thanks for the insight!

This is such a huge motivation! I know I have a lot of dream cosplays that are obscure or used to be trend cosplays, but I either wasn't into cosplay at the time, or just never had the skill or budget to do those. I can't wait to tackle those projects now!!! Huge thank you for that!! It's also super neat to be the only one online cosplaying a character. I'm the only one I've seen so far to cosplay McMillan from the Black Butler manga (specifically the school arc), and it feels really good knowing that you've made a unique mark on the fandom.
Also, to prove your first point, when you started talking about Gilbert, I started crying omg I love him so much.

  • @Witchydigit

You are such a pure soul, and I adore pretty much everything you put out. If I'm nit wrong, I actually met you at Holmat 2018, eating dinner at the cafe. You were in Yurio and I kinda butted into your conversation, but I had been awake fir over 24 hours to drive to the con and waiting for my roomie to arrive and check into the hotel. It meant a lot to me, because I was really hitting that wall. You are a genuinely friendly person, and if I recognize you at Momo here I'll try to say hi! But to the topic of unpopular cosplays, I've got a doozy for ya. There's this multimedia project by the NCBI called Football in the Year 17776, and it involves the Explorer 9, Explorer 10, and Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer satellites as main characters. I'll have JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) finished by my next con, and I don't even care if anybody recognizes it, because for being a sentient satellite, he is also a pure soul, and that comic, for lack of a better term, is an absolute trip as far as being amazingly fun but also an amazingly important story to me
