I love how this song operates on two levels. Some people just see it as a funny song about a squid. And other people understand what it's really about.
Damn I love JoCo.
Only he could disguise a deep, meaningful song with lyrics about a self loathing giant squid.
This is the most beautiful song I've heard in a while. Pity it's not as well known as his funnier songs.
I did a cover of this song 13 years ago and has always remained one of my favorites to play to this day.

JoCo is the modern incarnation of jesus truly my favourite and most inspiring artist, and by far the most imaginative musician ever to lul this earth with sweet melody.
It takes real talent to take a seemingly silly premise for a song - self-loathing giant squid - and make it haunting and beautiful. I *heart* JoCo.

@TehN00Bpwnator A: its a self loathing squid, if he loved himself then this would be a happy song. B: as a songwriter myself, you don't always write about you, if you get what I'm saying, most songwriters write about characters, this guy just chooses squid, zombies, etc. to flow his angst through rather than being boring and saying "I loved this girl, la la la".

Indeed. Maybe it is because those songs have more serious, underlying messages. This one's about loneliness, imo. And Future Soon is about a geek growing up or something, instead of a menacing robot :P. Both amazing songs!

I know this song isn't meant to be taken seriously, but the song sounds so lovely and his voice is just sooo soothing....

I don't like people thinking of this as a love song morphed into a monster. This is a monster morphed into a love song. Which is much more beautiful.

You know, I think I prefer the acoustic versions of some of Jonathan Coulton's songs. This one in particular is really pretty.

I think that everyone feels like that sometimes. There are so many times that you can ruin something by trying to help- or even just completely by accident out of nowhere.
It's an awful, lonely feeling sometimes. Very nice to see it put into a song for once, instead of typical sorrow-melodrama.
Despite his songs being about self-loathing giant squids, and scientists building inventions in their space labs in space, I find it to be some of the most touching music going.
