This channel's definitive explanation of the mysteries and mythology from the seminal TV series LOST (2004). Part Six is the final part in The Theory of Everything series in which we open up The Magic Box to explore what exactly it is and why it matters in more ways than one. Believe it or not but opening up the magic box actually helps us to answer various questions ranging from how much Ben really knew about The Island to Locke's dad Anthony Cooper's appearance to Kate's mysterious horse and Sawyer's troublesome boar. This final part will also cover common and controversial misconceptions about the show's ending and why certain myths have been perpetuated over the years. We will also speculate on what happened after Ajira 316 escaped from The Island and what Hurley's reign as protector might have looked like, followed by an exploration of potential sequel and spin-off ideas.

I think the last scene with Hurley and Ben is my favorite in the whole series. Both just the sheer wholesomeness of the scene and that they complete their character arc.
Hugo has shed his doubts of himself, is confident and has been a great leader.
Ben was the furthest from redemption of the main cast, but through years of their relationship he is almost redeemed.

You explained the finale and the perception of the finale perfectly. It’s very frustrating that the show, and the on-island events of the finale, are overshadowed by that final 15 minutes.
While I loved the flash-sideways and the finale on live viewing as a kid, I definitely had that mindset that the last 15 mins in the church were the revelation of the show and the answer we’ve been waiting for. I regret that because it made me not care as much about the island story.
On rewatch, the island parts of the finale have become possibly my favorite episode. I wouldn’t change anything about Lost and I still find the flash-sideways unbelievably emotional (it also is the only show to basically complete two character arcs for each character). However, I very much believe if the flash-sideways didn’t exist, and the story stayed on the island and played out the same way, the finale would be received better. The island plot is what I feel attached to all of these years later, and you are spot on that it is unfortunately disregarded due to the sideways twist, as well as the show as a whole.

LOST was the first show I truly obsessed over, analyzed it and interacted with the online community and after the LOST finale I was quite baffled with the whole "they were dead the whole time" thing, it's just a display of complete media illiteracy and LOST couldn't have hammered it harder in our heads than have a character basically talk straight to the audience and say it was all real and people still didn't get it. It's frustrating.

I had a hard time keeping up with it when it was week to week, especially if you missed an episode.
I didn't fully appreciate it until I could binge watch it. It was almost like it was meant as a streaming show before streaming was really a thing. Almost like... it was connected to the future... *twilight zone theme intensifies*

I don't think it would of been as big on streaming. The wait became part of it. The gaps between episodes gave every time to think and talk about it, the gaps between mid season, drove you nuts but gave you something to look forward to, the gaps between seasons was a cultural event.

What's strange is that multiple times I've calmly explained how everyone was NOT dead the whole time to people with that misconception, and they refused to be corrected and even seemed to have a hostile tone as they insisted everyone WAS dead and that makes the show terrible, etc. Some people just want to hate the series for no good reason. It seems some people are determined to feel bitter toward Lost and its creators based on their own mistake for the rest of their lives.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108  7 місяців тому +6

I agree that there are people who like to hate on the series regardless of explanations or evidence. Not just about the ending, but the idea that LOST answered many of its questions and that the writers had a plan for the mythology behind the scenes. I'm making a video about that very subject next.

  • @alfredvickers4054

That's what I love about Lost. While most mysteries and questions are answered enough for the story to make sense, there are unanswered mysteries and ambiguities that allow the show to retain some sense of intrigue and wonder no matter how many times you watch it, perpetually giving us something to think about or discuss.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108  7 місяців тому +4

Totally agree with you. If they had tied up the whole thing with a bow on top, having exhaustively explained every nook and cranny of the mythology, it would have left nothing to think about or discuss. And I doubt we would all still be debating it years later. Those ambiguities and interpretive qualities have given LOST a life far beyond its series finale.

31:10 The fact that it has to be explained that they weren't 'dead the whole time' is a clear sign of the level of attention and comprehension that the general viewer has. Christian even explains it IN the actual episode! I'm afraid that these days it's even worse; people seem to lack the capacity or patience to understand moderately complex plots. Seriously, I can't get it. It's sad that one of the greatest TV shows ever was bashed because of this. By the way, great work with this improved version of the series! I'm out of people to watch the show with for one more time haha, so... this made me feel sort of in the glorious days when we discussed the episodes week after week. Thank you!

I actually only discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago, binged the whole of your Theory Of Everything series, and was disappointed that this part wasn't there... and now I've been able to watch the best part of all... you've done a masterful job of explaining Lost and also defending Lost from those unfair criticisms of those who didn't invest in the show like the true fans did. If there was anyone I'd trust to revive the show, it'd be you, brother. However, like you, I think it's best left to rest as a piece of perfect storytelling and the legend that influenced all future TV show formats and ideas since. Your ending speech really choked me up... it was beautifully summed up and really captured the deep messages and morals that Lost itself had interwoven throughout its six amazing seasons. Thank you for doing this show justice.

Last time I watched Lost I started writing down fun ideas for a sequel series about Hurley, Ben, and Walt on the island, but it would also pick up with Aaron and Ji-Yeon off the island and wanting to know more about what happened in the past. There would be appearances from Rose and Bernard, of course. I also thought about flashbacks to the ancient Egyptians. I never did anything with these ideas, though. Never been the fan fiction writing type. Maybe I should do it. It might be good practice for my own original stories.

I think you have the right idea in wanting to do a mini-series with a new cast. I mean the concept of "Hanso's" descendant coming in and being the big bad can allow all the lose ends regarding the "Dharma Initiative" to be sown up in particular it's origins, how the Hanso's reacted to it's purge, and what largely legacy if any is left to be explored.

This is an absolutely wonderful series you have put together here, and reaching the end feels almost like losing the show all over again. I am currently in the process of a rewatch with my wife and I still cant believe this show exists. I cant believe a team of writers went to the herculean effort of making it, and that the world has largely turned its back on it, and dismissed it with a few lazy hand-waves and a comment about "nothing being answered". I was able to watch all of LOST with my wife earlier this year. I had watched it when it aired and several times since then and she never saw it because her parents insist that it’s a terrible show with no resolution. She was skeptical at first, but as soon as we hit the ending of “Walkabout” she was totally on board and loved it the whole way through. Such a criminally underrated show that will forever carry an unfair label perpetuated by people who haven’t even seen it.

Another amazing video man! The "What became of Hurly, Ben etc." Chapter actually hits on an amazing point that I can shed some semi-official light on.
I went to one of the LOST Orchestra concerts in LA back in 2018 and got to met & take a pic with Damon after. I was the last person in line before the Q&A got cut off, so Damon asked me what I was gonna ask. Someone shot down my outrigger question prior, so the only thing I could think of was "What happened to Jack's body after he died?" And he laughed like "what, you think he's just rotting there right now?" Basically, he said "I'd like to think that Rose & Bernard was led to him by Vincent and gave him a proper burial."
I also asked if there would be another new Smoke Monster as Jack because Jack died similar to Man in Black, but Damon said "No." lol

Thanks for all the excellent videos. I like your idea for a limited new show that would be the proverbial toe in the island waters to see if it generates enough interest for additional stories. Whatever the cause for what’s ailing the island's water in this new series would surely be known by whoever ends up fixing it (assuming it’s ultimately fixed). That person could interact with someone while in their sideways who like Desmond, is able to communicate with people in the real world. That person could be Charlie, Desmond and Penny’s son. Since that Charlie would probably not have an instinctual need to write stuff on his fingers and hands like his namesake, he could probably communicate his message with more context than "Not Penny's Boat".

My theory has always been that the island is actually Gygia and Mother is Calypso. In the old myth, Calypso won't let Odysseus leave the island and offers him immortality if he stays to protect the island. He stares out at the ocean and she sits and weaves on her loom. In some versions, Odysseus actually gives her two children before Athena forces Calyspo to let him leave.
Odysseus is trapped on the island and wants desperately to get on a boat and return to his home island of Ithica and his wife Penelope.
Desmond also wants to get into his boat and return to his home island of England and his wife, Penelope...
If they want to go full Greek Myth, the island could have been the spot where Zeus cast the titans into Tartarus. And the island 'cork' is the seal that keeps the primordial forces locked away. Maybe thats why time shifts when they mess with it... Cronos is down there (I know, doesn't quit fit as Chronos is time).
Corfu could also be good fit as it has mythological ties as well as being the site of many different structures for different ages, but as it's currently inhabited it would be a bit awkward...

Dude, I know I run the risk of constantly repeating myself in each of your videos, but I just gotta give you mega props on this one. You wrapped up your documentary series of deep dives perfectly. Talking about the future and what might have been for the survivors is not something I thought about much after the show ended, but you gave me such deep insight that I find it hard to ignore now. Up until your pitch for what could be a continuation of the show, I was on the camp that this should absolutely be left alone. But that idea you had about Jin and Sun's daughter and Claire's son was just so tremendously good, I would absolutely watch that. In fact, I would accept no less - that idea was just spot-on. You're completely right that the show should be set after the events of the original series.
On another note, the way you ended this video was brilliant. It reminded me yet again of why I fell in love with the show in the first place - letting go of your past, looking ahead towards your future, and finding people to connect with in the present. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a big tear in the last couple of minutes of this video. It was beautifully done. Your narration, along with the music and scenes from the show, summarized everything up beautifully. Like the show itself, you have successfully made this grown ass man cry.
Thanks yet again for the love you put into your breakdowns and I look forward to watching the other videos in your channel. I promise to try to keep a lid on the comments as well, haha.
    Stay Lost. 🛩️🏝️

@LostExplained - thank you for doing the good work. This show absolutely changed my life and I cannot thank you enough for the work you're doing to help the masses understand.
Two ideas I've had for additional Lost:
1.) A Max/Streaming show that is technically a reboot - but the idea is... All those ideas/character arcs/events that had to be cut for one reason or another (for example: the character of Mr. Echo and the plans for him, etc...) and all the script changes (all the curse words and whatnot that had to be cut out for network TV) can be restored, along with a couple tweaks to the story, would allow a brand new cast to tell a familiar story, that is and of itself it's own thing.
    Or
2.) A Game of Thrones style drama taking place in the far future - however, the supernatural aspects are front and center, as the time period is a far flung future - we see the players on the island as an ancient culture, but it's actually the last vestiges of humanity who have adopted a part pre-historic part medieval aesthetic who support Jacob/Man in Black leaders, who it turns out, are the actual embodiments of good and evil vying for control of the island before the cosmos itself destroys the planet via some cosmic mechanism (like the collision of Andromeda and the Milky way)... Whoever controls the island and it's light when that universe ending happens controls the ultimate fate of the flash sideways reality, and more importantly, the nature of the next reality that will begin in the last one's wake.
(Smash cut to LOST accompanied by that echoing, metallic sound)
    🙂

I rewatched this video after watching the two newer ones about the show runners. I've mentioned this previously, but I really love what you have done with this channel. Each watch sparks new ideas on what could be. For example: What if the MIB had a second loophole Jacob never knew about? The black cloud was able to store backups of its consciousness and memories. Not wanting to create copies of himself that might challenge him, he used it only as a failsafe at the end incase his battle with Jacob’s replacement ended bad (which it did). While standing beside Clair at the dock after the submarine sank, he implanted a copy of himself into her (his 3 years alone with her on the island conditioned her for this). Kate and Jack soon after kill the MIB but his consciousness escaped the island in the physical form of Clair. Unknown to him, Mother’s consciousness was also backed up in the cloud and it too was implanted into Clair. Once the plane was off the island and Jack had restarted the source, Mother took over and gave the MIB the time out he so richly deserved. Mother’s years of isolation scarred her deeply, which caused her to make poor decisions while raising her two boys. She observed and learned much while riding shotgun in the MIB’s cloud and used that knowledge wisely while Clair raised Aaron. Clair connects with Eloise and together they use the Lamppost to fix everything not only in the Lost universe, but any universe where people are forced to endure commercial television.

You've definitely renewed my love for LOST and reminded me why it captivated me so much as a kid nearly 20 years ago lol. This show is so special to me, and I'm so happy that creators like you are willing to put in the work to show exactly why so many people feel that way. Can't wait for what the future holds, but for now -- let's just celebrate how amazing this series has been. Cheers!

I think your idea of focusing on the kids of original Losties is perfect. I would go further and not have the island involved until the very last episode. The Lost Kids would be searching for answers about their parents, what actually happened, and what this mysterious "island" really is. I think you could build mysteries by using the ley lines to intersect in certain areas and have them be really strange. Plus, have a new "Dharma" type group doing research into this and looking for the island (they would be the main bad guys). I think if as much care is taken to build the mysteries and lore as the original, this would be an awesome world to revisit.

  • @garyianbritton

I think there are a number of issues with extending this series in anyway, most of which you touched on in the video. For me the biggest one is that despite all the mystery in the show and the supernatural goings on, at its core Lost was about the characters and how they responded to all these strange goings on and how they developed as the series progressed. Those characters either died in the show and/or their stories were wrapped up in the show and/or the actors would not come back to play them, or are to old to realistically come back and play them, which is a big issue for a "character" driven series.
While I like your idea of the "babies" of the original Lost (e.g., Aaron) coming back to star in a reboot on a surface level, realistically beyond Walt none of them were old enough to have any "character" in the original show, Walt didn't even really have much "character" beyond his supernatural connection with the island, and for me having them come back to star in a reboot would just be a stretch to somehow connect it, character and plot wise, with the original, but would fail at this as none of these characters really do have any connection with the original show apart from parentage except from, to some extent, Walt.
I think the only way to reboot the show would be to have a completely new set characters completely unconnected to the original, which then leaves the Island as the only real remaining "character" from the original series. The problem with this is, as much as you have tried to explain the purpose and "character" of the Island in these videos (and have done a good job), for a lot of people the Island is just a strange entity where lots of weird shit happens, and even as a big fan of the show, I didn't really like the whole "source" explanation given for the Islands existence towards the end of the series run and, if I had not have watched your videos, I would still have a lot of other outstanding questions about the Island and its nature. Because of this, I'm not sure that any story based solely around the Island, like the Egyptian prequel idea you mention and I have seen in other places, would have any appeal to anyone beyond us hardcore OG fans, and so will never get the green light from the studio. Why would the studio not just make some alternative and new supernatural/mysterious place if they wanted to create a new show similar to Lost, a place similar to the Island in Lost in terms of its strange qualities, but a place where the mysteries and supernatural goings on would not have to follow the preset rules and law that the Lost Island would have to follow?
I think sadly (or not sadly) Lost will never be rebooted, or at least rebooted well.

I would love a mix of a prequel and sequel. The sequel being the kids, but they end up going back in time starting the problems while thinking they could save the originals by changing things not realizing their attempts at changing things is what started the entire cycle of what is meant to be will be. I like the idea of expanding on the earlier settlements and problems and that would be a good opportunity to expand on it.

Here's my pitch for a possible sequel or spinoff. One way to combine all the great ideas laid out in your video is an anthology series similar to Black Mirror. There would be 6-10 episodes, exploring vastly different settings and time periods, each ranging anywhere from 40-90 minutes, however long it takes to tell the respective stories in the best possible way. Disney+, where that show would inevitably air, has already demonstrated they are comfortable with varying episode lenghts.
So one episode could feature the first people on the island, subtitles and everything. There would be an egyptian episode, maybe a 1940s US army episode. Present day would feature your Aaron/Ji Yeon pitch and one episode would see Hurley passing the torch to Walt at the end of his training.
The one episode I would love to see most of all however would be about Radzinsky. I really like the notion you put forth in one of your videos, that Radzinsky manning the Swan is some sort of pennance, his way of dealing with his guilt over the incident. So Eric Lange can reprise his role as an aged, 1980s Radzinsky and this way we could return to our beloved Swan, tie up some loose ends and please all the Dharma Lore Lovers, like myself.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108

You know what? I LOVE this idea! A LOST anthology series could cover so much ground, bring us new storylines, resolve some old ones, and still feel totally fresh conceptually. We could get a bit of everything. And I feel like it would be a cool way to reintroduce The Island and its concepts to new audiences without needing to bring too much baggage because every episode is a different story that takes place on the same weird, mysterious island just in different eras. The Island would be the constant, so to speak. And for those wanting more stories about this place to tie it all together, they can seek out LOST the original series to spend more time on The Island. I demand that you pitch this to ABC and Bad Robot immediately, sir!

    - I imagine Hurley went out of his way to give that damn DriveShaft ring to Aaron.
    - Ji-Yeon is presumably the main shareholder in Paik Industries. I wonder if she one day will want find where her parents conceived her, and also died. Similar to Charlotte's life-long goal to find where she grew up.
    - Clementine has plenty of money as Sawyers' prison winnings were placed in a bank account in her name.
    - As Ben is going around shutting up shop (in the prologue), he'll meet characters such as that butcher (in S5) who held John's coffin, telling them Dharma is no more. He'll have one last shady trick to make sure Lapidus plane stays under the radar, or lawyers to dismiss Kates complete disregard of her trial conditions.
    - Walt finally receives payment after Hurley lost in that game in S1(?)
    - I think losing Jack will be too much for Kate. Losing Aaron will be incompressible. So I believe she will continue to play a big tole in his life with Claire, and Claires' mom.
    - Des, Penny & Charlie will live a secluded life in the countryside, away from microwaves, alarm clocks, and computers. Just a bottle of McCutchin Whiskey. Penny is already wealthy, but presumably will inherit her fathers' estate after he is presumed dead?
Edit: You just mentioned some of these later in the video😂

You use only the show's content and its internal consistency to explain everything that happened in it. I would add Jack’s and Kate’s son to the game as well. For sure it was not sideway’s David but it was possible that Kate was pregnant when leaving the island. As an added twist, Aaron Ji Yeon and ”David” can have some supernatural skills in a same way as Walt and Miles.
