I think people often forget that two things can be true. In the context of Kya and Bumi, Aang was a bad father. Neglect in any form is not good and we see the resentment it creates in Kya and Bumi. But that doesn’t mean that’s what Aang intended. I agree with all the hats he had to put on, including keeping a whole culture alive that neglect was almost an inevitable conclusion. These characters are nuanced and I appreciate being able to have conversations like this about them. It was a really heartwarming thing to see that despite their differences and issues at the moment, they'll always put family first. Family moments in Avatar are always spot-on! Tenzin's family moments and Korra's family moments, honestly one of my favorite aspects of this season ❤ Korra using Naga to threaten the judge gives me chills even though it isn't exactly a good thing for an Avatar to do. That's precisely why they wrote adult Aang the way they did, to show that nobody, i.e. no parent, is perfect. I believe. When it comes down to it Aang neglected his children. Point blank period. Never gave them nearly enough attention as he did to Tenzin. Doesn't mean he didn't love them with all his heart, but as children actions speak Waaaay louder than words do. @MeeshDeeReacts tenzin was also the youngest and we all know how youngest siblings can be... kya as we know traveled the world on her own, so she probably flew the coop young, much like her parents did. Bumi got kidnapped by the military so who even knows what/how/when that happened except for him?

29:10 This scene always just breaks my heart. It makes me so sad to see him like that because Bumi really does try his best the only way he can -- serving in the United Forces. The fact that he feels like he is not enough makes me think that him and Aang never really talked about their feeilngs T^T Also, I love that Bumi and Kaya have the kind of close relationship that is forged by experiencing the same pain. Love seeing them support each other. Rewatching this again, I realize LOK truly does portray family relationships incredibly well.
Yea but if I remember correctly later on they realize Aang was trying they just wasn't looking at it that way they where just looking at what they didn't have and not what they did . Because I know the daughter kya is lesbian or bi and in the comics she told korra when she told Aang she didn't know how he would react and was nervous but he hugged her and was happy for her
@@kingjames6948 Let me be clear on this -- I don't think Aang was a bad father. I think he really did try his best, considering all the responsibilties he had to shoulder. I think that is true. And yet, I believe it is also true that Kya and Bumi were hurt because he didn't give them enough attention. In my opinion, in Aangs relationship with his kids, there is no right or wrong, bad or good. In some aspects, I'm sure, Aang was present, loving and attentive. At the same time, Kya and Bumi's feelings are justified as well. Doesn't mean that they don't love him. They still appreciate and love Aang for everything he did do.
@@Juuri_ See I feel kinda similar like Aang was their and was going on trips with kya and bumi but they just always was a little jealous of that little connection Aang and Tenzin had through airbending so that's the part they focused on. Plus Aang had to rebuild the world, while also keeping the airnation culture alive plus being a fulltime parent something was bout to go wrong because there's only so much one person can do. I also think that kya and bumi aren't focusing on the good parts that They had with Aang I'm betting they had Amazing fun and Deep talks. But I also wish they had said something like this in LOK instead of just leaving it so Vague they could've easily had them(kya & bumi) realize they had a Great relationship with Aang as well they were just jealous of the special connection Aang and tenzin had through Airbending which does happen in families as well it's not always Favoritism sometimes it's just jealousy or perspective. or instead they could've had Katara say something like "We always went on Family trips " or "your father loved you and was proud of you both Especially you Bumi " instead they just drop big bombs like Dad loved you more and never Addressed it Again or That Aang wasnt proud of bumi because he was a non bender so that's why he joined the military. I dont understand why the show made it seem like he didn't love them. Unless it's the whole "The Grass is green'er on the other side" thing like I mentioned earlier they just didn't didn't realize how good there relationship was with Aang. But even if it was they should've had them address that in the show.
@@kingjames6948 The way I see it, the part where Kya pulls out the family picture of them all together was to show that Aang did indeed love them equally, despite everything else. I assume the show simply tried to express that none of the ATLA characters were perfect. It's not about putting blame on specific people or chosing a side, but rather showing nuances to the characters. Maybe the writers put their hope in the viewers that they would also understand everything that WASN'T said. Personally, I do believe that most viewers *know* that Aang wasn't a bad father at all while also not being perfect.
@@Juuri_ yea I would HOPE that some people understand that there's a lot more that wasn't said but why I wish they expanded more is because now there's an entire section of the fandom that despises Aang and say he hated his kids, and he was a deadbeat, saying he was only worried about Tenzin and didn't raise kya and bumi
Speaking on if the other avatars had families and children, yall mentioned Kyoshi but are forgetting a more recent one which was Roku. Roku is Zukos grandfather.
I don’t this Aang was terrible, but I don’t think kya & bumi were making stuff up. I’m not one of those fans who likes to live in denial bc a character I like changes when they become an adult and I think that’s what’s wrong w a lot of the fandom. They’re still holding on to what Aang was when he was 12, and refuse to see him in any other light besides that. I def feel Aang neglected them bc he had to make sure tenzin was ready to carry on the tradition of the air nomads, but I still feel like if he was trying his best like people say, this altercation between kya & bumi wouldn’t have happened
I think they also forget how much Kya and Bumi talk about being bored or that they tried to get into the air nomad history and stuff but it just didn't stick😂. Like the situation is definitely more nuanced than Ang just forgetting about all of his non-airbender kids
Speaking as someone who certainly had a bad father. I don’t see Aang as a bad dad. Certainly flawed. As it was discussed in this video. Aang was the last Airbender. His only hope to revive his culture was to have an airbender child. His first son was a non-bender, second child was a waterbender, and it wasn’t until his third child that he saw his chance to revive that culture. Though, he should have brought his other kids on those trips.
Aang wasn't a bad father, really. His kids know that he loved them, and cared about them. He just wasn't perfect, he did let his duties and personal desires get in the way of his family. Maybe he was right to, but it did have a negative effect on his relationship with his kids.
These Kataang kids episodes always make me wish we had some kind of flashbacks on the Gaangs kids. I mean, does anyone else wonders why Kya wears a betrothal necklace? Who are Iroh II and Lin's dads? What adventures Bumi went through while in the army? How does Izumi handles the pressure of being the 1st female firelord and all? Etc...👀👀
I wouldn’t say Aang was a bad father… Though he might focus more on Tenzin because he is an Airbender with makes him the last Airbender after Aang died… But it don’t mean he was a bad I’m sure he love his kids… And you know Siblings will always be Siblings getting jealous of each other or bullying each other just like we’re seeing with Jinora and her siblings
Re: Aang as a father I've seen some people argue "Aang would NEVER" And all I can say is that it's okay for characters to have flaws. It makes them interesting. If Aang can be a bending prodigy, rizzmaster with Katara, peacemaker and peacekeeper, while being fun, kind, intelligent, and empathetic with both man and spirits, it's okay if he had a problem connecting with his non-Airbending kids. Doesn't mean he didn't love them.
Also last time the audience saw him was at 12 year old. I find it strange that some how people can predict whether or not a 12 year old would grow up to be a decent father. Can anyone honestly pick out any 12 year old in their lives and confidently determine they would be a good dad or not. Let alone an orphan 12 year old who was communally raised by monks all his life.
Jesus I could not agree more. I can't with people hating on LOK just because. She's her own person and they keep comparing her to Aang. I love both. I love ATLA because it's my childhood. And I love Korra because as a young adult, it's so relatable. Doesn't matter that I'm a straight dude.
It’s one thing to say Ang spent more time with Tenzin because of training him to become an air nomad. It’s another thing to try and claim Ang would literally not take his other kids with him on f-ing vacation. That literally means he loves his other children less which is bull considering how much he loved even an animal as insignificant as momo.
@@brando8611 Once again, I didn't say he loved Tenzin more. I'm saying it's fine if Aang didn't connect with Bumi or Kya as much. Favoritism happens, especially when one kid is interested in things you're interested in (in this case, Airbending).
Idk man, Aang was a bad father in the fact he didnt include all of his kids in certain things. But what can he do if Kya and Bumi weren’t interested in Air bender culture. Is he supposed to force them to learn? I feel like its kind of hypocritical for them to go at Tenzin for that when they had no interest in it.
Aang was for sure a flawed father but I think he really did love his kids and he just had a responsibility to the world and to the future of the air nomads.
I definitely dont think Aang was a bad father And loved his kids very much. He basically had to police the world and help build it, while rebuilding an entire culture WHILE 😥 being a fulltime parent something was going to give and go wrong or at least not as he planned I'm surprised Aang was still able to function with all that stress plus I'm pretty sure he loved his kids but he was just busy I think he went on trips with them and everything but they where jealous of him and tenzin bond . Look at how military parents are. And cop parents are now make that world wide instead of just one city.
I've been seeing so many people giving Aang the excuse of "Aang never had parents so he doesn't know how to be a proper father" or "Of course he's gonna favor Tenzin more since he's the Airbender" which I think is just completely dumb. Aang could've allowed Kya and Bumi to follow him on all those trips because as we know from Tenzin, he wasn't just training 24/7 with Aang.. he literally said he built sand castles on Ember Island etc. Aang could've taught Kya and Bumi the Air Nomad Culture like those Air Acolytes did (Pema and all those non bending people in the Air Temples) Kya could've expanded her fighting styles more by bending water but with the moves of Air culture just like how Korra's airbending style is more Modern style very aggressive or like Katara when she did that Earthbending move against Hama. Aang is just a bad father, we don't have to make excuses for him and not everyone is perfect.
@@chrisjacobsen7265 No, Kya only knew (barely btw) about the Guru thing and it wasn't specifically said that it was Aang who taught her or gave her the knowledge plus it was implied that Tenzin was the one that told her because Kya tried to reminisce with Pema and Tenzin replied with "yes I remember" so stop trying to make it seem like Aang did his job when he didn't.
@@vgfunman Aang was a bad father towards Bumi and Kya, moreso Bumi because he had to grow up thinking he was a failure and didn't know his own father was proud of him.
There are people that say that Aang was a bad father but I don't think so. Without being too spoiler-y Aang wanted Bumi and Kya there but they chose not to involve themselves in Air Nation culture, and that's on them. Relationships are a two way street, and Aang could only do so much. I feel if Aang failed any of his children it was Tenzin. There was so much pressure on Tenzin and he tried so hard to live up to his father, that it was simply impossible.

After I read the channel bio I always got the impression that Meesh was the legal professional and Dee was on the health career Probably because Meesh usually seem more serious while Dee is goofier and with a humor that resembles that of the women I work with at the hospital
Korra used the avatar state in the first episode against the spirit and in the second episode to open the sprit portal so are you talking about the fact she has only not used the avatar state in one episode from before episode 4 or till this episode and Korra is great at bending without going into the avatar state
Love your videos. I recently found your channel and love the Korra reactions. this season is definitely my least favorite but there are some things that are done really well. I find Korra’s issues with her dad to hit hardest because i’ve been going through similar stuff with mine.
Aang was not a bad father. But as the Avatar, he's not allowed to prioritize his family over the world. As harsh as it may sound, Tenzin is more important to the world than Kya and Bumi. So Aang had to spend the little free time he had mentoring Tenzin. But he didn't exclude his other children from his culture, they just weren't as interested in it at the time because they didn't relate as much to airbending. And they weren't angry at Tenzin for supposedly being the golden child, they were angry at him for thinking Aang was perfect and that carrying his legacy is his responsibility alone.
Hey Avatar Meesh and Avatar Dee "Happy Monday". I hope you two had a wonderful weekend. I wouldn't say Aang is a terrible father. But at the same time he wasn't perfect. I feel he favored Tenzin more than Bumi and Kya. Because Tenzin is an Airbender. Which is messed up. I feel bad for Bolin for being in an abusive relationship. Korra role as Avatar is truly being tested as she is caught in a conflict between the Northern Water Tribe and Southern Air Tribe. Varrick is hilarious. Unalaq being bad wasn't surprising. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing.
Hey Avatar Rob! Happy Monday to you too :) Agree with you that Aang wasn't a terrible father per-se, he had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders all while balancing his family and his avatar duties. Hope you have a great week ahead!
It's not that he was a bad father, it's that he wasn't the best father to his other 2 non Airbender children. As someone who grew up with a father who is well regarded and respected, who in reality wasn't that great a father, or husband, while still being an all-around decent person eventually to me and my siblings as we've gotten older, I can appreciate a deconstruction of Aang and Toph as being not so good parents to their kids. (Oh, I can not wait for ya'll to get to the next books, Lin gets an arc in regards to her issues with her mother, that is JUICEY)

Zuko, the one with the most daddy issues turned out to be the best dad amongst the gang 🤣

29:10 This scene always just breaks my heart. It makes me so sad to see him like that because Bumi really does try his best the only way he can -- serving in the United Forces. The fact that he feels like he is not enough makes me think that him and Aang never really talked about their feeilngs T^T
Also, I love that Bumi and Kaya have the kind of close relationship that is forged by experiencing the same pain.
Varrick is one of my favorite characters 😂
Same!! lol -D
He and Ju lee always do DA THAAAAAAANG!!!!!
I definitely think Aang spent time with kya and bumi and loved them they where just jealous of the connection Aang and Tenzin had through airbending.

Mommy Asami 😂
Thanks! I’m gona steal that one!
Airbenders or not Kya and Bumi are STILL half air nation
Wait, new intro? Or am I crazy 😆. As always, it’s fun watching y’all’s reactions to the show. Looking forward for the upcoming episodes 😁
Yesss new intro 😉✨❤️
Re: Aang as a father
I've seen some people argue "Aang would NEVER"
And all I can say is that it's okay for characters to have flaws.
Your excuses for bullsht writing is quite amusing though
@@brando8611 Once again, I didn't say he loved Tenzin more. I'm saying it's fine if Aang didn't connect with Bumi or Kya as much. Favoritism happens, especially when one kid is interested in things you're interested in (in this case, Airbending).
loving the new intro!! ❤
Yay!! Glad you like it and the rebrand 🥰✨
Dee says" oh baby "a lot maybe it should be a merch shirt 😂😂😂
Idk man, Aang was a bad father in the fact he didnt include all of his kids in certain things. But what can he do if Kya and Bumi weren’t interested in Air bender culture. Is he supposed to force them to learn? I feel like its kind of hypocritical for them to go at Tenzin for that when they had no interest in it.
That is a good point lol they even make fun of some of the stories of the Gurus too
avatar Roku’s daughter was Zukos’s Grandma (Ursas mom)
No it’s zukos mom. Zukos mom father is avatar Roku.
@@Jointz3 no Avatar Roku is Zuko’s great-grandfather
"We can't believe you did either."
😂😂😂😂 I'm dead
Aang was for sure a flawed father but I think he really did love his kids and he just had a responsibility to the world and to the future of the air nomads.
Zukos mother’s father is Avatar Roku
Grandfather
Grandfather
Aang could've taught Kya and Bumi the Air Nomad Culture like those Air Acolytes did (Pema and all those non bending people in the Air Temples)
Kya could've expanded her fighting styles more by bending water but with the moves of Air culture just like how Korra's airbending style is more Modern style very aggressive or like Katara when she did that Earthbending move against Hama.
Aang is just a bad father, we don't have to make excuses for him and not everyone is perfect.
He wasnt a bad father though. The nuanced way to look at it is that he's a father w flaws
They actually make it clear that Aang did teach at least Kya some Airbending culture in season 3
@@mikhaelis1447 kya is confirmedto be the most like aang, and became nomadic just like his people
There are people that say that Aang was a bad father but I don't think so.
All good points here! Relationships are certainly a two-way street. 🙏🏼
Aubrey Plaza was the perfect voice actress for eska
„Why do you think I built this boat?“

That "fun fact" whole scene is the reason I got the A4 hardcover version of turf wars😂 The sunset complimented Kyas color pallet so well I just had to buy it😭

So Dee is the lawyer? After I read the channel bio I always got the impression that Meesh was the legal professional and Dee was on the health career
Probably because Meesh usually seem more serious while Dee is goofier and with a humor that resembles that of the women I work with at the hospital
17:13 Roku has at least one daughter, who is zuko and azula’s maternal grandmother
20:37 *induction.
Korra used the avatar state in the first episode against the spirit and in the second episode to open the sprit portal so are you talking about the fact she has only not used the avatar state in one episode from before episode 4 or till this episode and Korra is great at bending without going into the avatar state
Is this the first time for you to watch for the both of you? Always enjoy your reaction
Hi there! This is Dee's first time watching TLOK. But Meesh has seen this series already :) Thanks for watching along with us!
Aubrey Plaza ftw 🥴 and I was all "I KNEW IT!"

Ma'am, why would toph be the earth queen??? Lol
I think you are in the wrong channel

I LOVE your guys new intro awesome. You should extend your Channel to VR
ooooo you have intro now 👍
