Good-Epic: Fabio Plus Emilia Equals Day of the Year in Newport Beach

“On Friday morning at dark, it had a little weird warble and super dredgey low tide,” said longtime Newport local Spencer Pirdy. “But by sun-up, it was clean and like photos I looked at as a little kid and dreamed about. Definitely a memorable morning. Pros were coming out, going, 'whoa, this is Southern California doing its impersonation of Puerto Escondido/Pipeline.' It was a very memorable swell. That's my perspective, at least, and people might have a different opinion -- but one thing I think we can all take away from it is that if we were out there, we scored because we all got to enjoy a pretty magical day in Southern California.”

The water is cold. Typically California, it ain't Hawaii. Some years get pretty warm, but more often CA has the cold currents, with lots of kelp. And fog.

Why is The Point so good?

There is an underwater canyon just offshore that refracts South swells ideally from 180 degrees, which are usually relatively close, short to medium period hurricane swells off the coast of Baja Mexico. The shoreline also bends about 45 degrees from facing directly South to South West. It only breaks a handful of times every summer, but when it’s on, it’s a world class barrel and easily the best wave in Orange County. I grew up surfing in Newport and have surfed some of the best waves of my life at Newport Point. 🤙🏼
