Where to start...😃
This sewing machine has one interesting story, namely I bought it at a local ad, very cheap, I don't remember how many, given the price we didn't ask for a lot of details from the seller.
The machine arrived very quickly, as soon as I picked it up I wondered what kind of weight this is, what is inside the package is it a big stone or a sewing machine. ???
I open the package, I have something to see, the Pfaff 230 sewing machine is in perfect condition, I can freely say "mint condition", its box is absolutely new, I notice that there are no accessories and foot control ... pity ??? but ok, let's move on...
I took off the top cover a little harder, but then it was clear to me that the machine was probably not used for years, I took off the cover and saw a broken timing belt 😏...I try to start the machine by hand it goes very very hard, the lower axle is practically frozen, everything is stationary but perfectly clean and dry.
I see the serial number 5810738, I conclude that the machine was manufactured back in 1957.!
I'm still trying to move the machine mechanism for a while, I notice that it's impossible and that the complete machine has to be disassembled and cleaned to the fullest detail ... since I love challenges, I did it...
When I started disassembling the machine, I also noticed that there was no dust under the machine, under the needle plate, no pieces of thread, nothing, most likely the timing belet cracked on the machine soon after purchase, the owner covered it and left it somewhere clean a dry room where she had stood for decades...??!!
The disassembly of the machine itself could not be recorded, namely in those years the Pfaff factory used a strange mixture of grease for the first assembly lubrication, I read somewhere that it was a mixture of grease and paraffin oil ... mostly this factory grease turns into glue over the years and most circuits have to be heated to dissipate that fat, it was a very demanding job to replace and recording all that was impossible, if there are any questions on this topic feel free to write in the comments, I'll try to answer.
I bought a spray for dissolving stubborn grease, a combination of solvent, mild heating, persistence and caution not to do something wrong, not to break some part ... I was most afraid of plastic metal gear and dismantling the assembly around it, that was painstakingly and very carefully, and the slightest scratch could destroy the gear, I eventually succeeded.
Everything was ready and clean to assemble. This "story" of mine will be in three videos, the first two are assembly and the third is a sewing test.
I did my best to show as many details as possible, but I admit that some details are missing, in some places you can't see the screw I'm tightening, some parts are placed inside the machine so presentation is impossible. I repeat, feel free to ask anything that is not clear.
As I said this is the first video out of three, very soon the second part and then the third and final test.
Finally, let me say that during the assembly I use a mixture of synthetic grease and oil for sewing machines, the ratio is approximately 1-1, it is practically like the first lubrication in the factory, afterwards only oil is used. Let me also say that video not have any accompanying music, I don't think it is necessary, and for the smallest detail there are copyright issues, there is no background music.

I have the 332 service manual and instruction manual, neither tell you how to take of and replace the balance wheel belt. Halp!

Peut-être que vous ne le savez pas, ce sont de vieilles machines à coudre qui n'ont pas été produites depuis longtemps. Des exemples d'occasion peuvent être trouvés en Europe, et ils sont apparemment très rares au Cameroun. Je ne savais pas que les Camerounais utilisaient le français.

Hi, is that MAIN SHAFT on that stitch width and needle position meant to have a “ SPRING “ before attaching the Stitch width DIAL/ BUTTON? Pardon my ignorance ( and for asking repeatedly questions) , because the service manual for PFAFF 332 on the last page shows a spring ( part # : 105 167 ) pressure spring for Zigzag Button . Also it mentions about Lower set screw (175) of notched member ( part # : 105 163 ). You do not need to apologize when you ask a question, the problem is sometimes that the answer cannot be described in words, you have asked the question well and it can be answered,
First: Lower set screw (175) of notched member ( part # 105163 ),
23:18 ,that screw is not needed and the machine cannot function properly with that screw! I installed it but later removed it, it was on the machine and it is not clear to me how and why, the specified part # 105163 must have a spring on the inside of the machine, unfortunately this was not recorded, the spring constantly pulls the specified part towards the needle position regulator.
Else: spring ( part # 105167 ) pressure spring for Zigzag Button,
it is true that in the service manual there is a specified spring in the picture, but it is not there on the Pfaff 230 and logically I do not know what the 24:30 would be for.
By the way, the restoration of this type of machine is rarely done even in the international framework, it is a complex mechanic, but high-quality and long-lasting.

Excellent video. How do you adjust the max zigzag width? I can't find anything in the service manual regarding this, only centering the zigzag. The zigzag dial only goes from 0 to about 3.6. Also, what is the assembly lube you are using?

It is very difficult to describe it in words, for lubrication I use oil for sewing machines and light synthetic grease mixed with oil.
Take a closer look at the video clip and maybe you will understand the adjustment method you are interested in, mainly pay attention to the middle shaft on which there is a zig zag width adjustment button as well as to the longitudinal "fork" connected to the plastic-metal gear.
@@MasinskiKutak Thanks for the reply. I removed the embroidery unit so I could better see the zigzag fork. It appears to me that the pivot for the fork is on an eccentric that allows it to be raised or lowered a bit. This does nothing when on straight stitch, but pushes the fork forward/backward when on zigzag stitch which offsets the zigzag left/right. It seems to me the only way to increase the max width of the zigzag is for the dial to turn more, increasing the angle of the guide block on the fork pivot. I couldn't see any limit adjustments for the dial, but when I removed the embroidery unit it was turning fully from 0 to 4. I don't know what was limiting the dial rotation before, but it's working now.

There are differences between Pfaff 230 and Pfaff 360, the models are very similar in principle. You do not have a serious malfunction, the problem is in the stitch length regulator, the service manual and the parts catalog describe this item quite well...

I am wondering what the method is to remove the upper plastic/metal gear. I wonder if you could help with that? Can the gear be removed without disassembly of the entire top of the machine?
That's a good question, to the best of my memory I think the upper main shaft has to be removed because the small shaft that holds the plastic metal gear can only be removed inwards, I left it on the machine and it's clearly visible 9:55
I know that it is a very complex job and if your gear is broken, it is most likely the definitive end for your old sewing machine, rarely do any of the technicians know and want to work, it is too complicated, many do not know, and the parts that must be removed are stuck and difficult to remove.

What do you mean "locks", sometimes it turns hard or stop completely..? When it works, does it sew normally?
When it stops, avoid starting the engine, start it manually, it is difficult to determine the location of the blockages, it can be in many places, I assume that the machine was not regularly maintained and thoroughly lubricated, maybe someone once used oil that was not suitable... I came across one of these in a barn at an estate sale. It has a very unique feature though, it has had its internal motor removed and has been mounted to an industrial table with a clutch motor. The machine is in bad condition, with many of the parts being rusty and it missing the belt that connects the main wheel to the feed dogs. The clutch motor works though and I oiled the machine and got it unfrozen. I’m wondering if you think it would be worthwhile to restore this machine (the belt seems to be very rare and expensive) the only reason I would restore this is to have a Machine more powerful than my domestic machine. I was wondering if you think this machine is strong enough to take advantage of the power of the clutch motor. On another note, any idea where to get parts that aren’t extremely expensive?
There are cases where this series of sewing machines is placed on an industrial table, it is difficult for me to say whether something goes wrong, you have to bear in mind that the internal timing belt is very likely old and can break very easily, because from the description we can see that the machine is neglected and was exposed to moisture and corrosion.
A clutch motor does not necessarily mean that it has some super power, read its characteristics on the plate, it can look big and have a power of 300 W.
However, if you decide to buy and train that sewing machine, it will have more power at high revolutions, and this will not be significant for you. The trend is servo motors that have a strong torque at a minimum number of revolutions.

So you have a Pfaff 230 sewing machine and you can't clamp the needle on it.?
It is very likely that the needle clamp does not work, the needle clamp is made up of several small parts, if you are skilled enough it is necessary to remove the needle clamp, disassemble it, inspect it in detail and clean it, you must do this very carefully so as not to lose one part of the needle clamp, in that in this case you have to look for a replacement. It can also happen that the needle clamp is irreparably destroyed.
Great video. On my machine the bobbin case and bobbin rotate together. Can’t seem to solve the issue. I have the needle arm sit in the slot then needle won’t go up and down. I can’t find what exactly is the cause.

Thank you. I have 332 machine. Do you explain how to remove the bobbin case sub assembly then may be I will be able to fix the issue. What am trying to say is the bobbin outer case and inner mechanism rotate together when they shouldn’t. Bobbin should stay still while the other case (with hook) should rotate. Mine they don’t (they used to). So I am lost as to what exactly is the issue.

You have great resources on your page, but something I seem to be missing/not finding on your site are places to order the more difficult parts such as the cleated belts and others that are not after-market stand-ins.
Thank you, yes it's true that I don't have anything for sale at the moment, I did it on eBay for 5-6 years and gave up, many reasons influenced my departure, first of all, difficult customs barriers, shipping... although I sold mostly parts of old sewing machines. I do it all by myself and I couldn't take the pressure, it was too much for me.

Hello, please I need help with my Pfaff 332. Suddenly the zig zag button blocked. I already pulled it off and tried to go back and forth on the screwed rod which remained on the position of the button but it does not moves, at all. Not even a little. It looks like some sort of mechanical error. What can I do.

This is the part that is connected to the stitch length system and the back and forth sewing option.
Your mechanical expertise is fantastic.. I realize these were well made German machines, but parts are impossible to find at this point. Pfaff, Singer, Viking, Elna, are all previously fine European machines that are now constructed from plastic and made in China. These companies no longer provide any parts in the U.S. I find that it is more practical for me to use a well constructed U.S. made machine ( Singer 401-500 ) and use "junk machines" for spare parts..
Yes, the old European sewing machines are really good quality, you forgot about the Swiss Bernina, and they moved a good part of the production to the east. Times are changing and with it sewing machines, when it comes to home sewing machines, the quality is very questionable, there are no longer sewing machines that will last for decades, I think that "epoch" is over, most cheap sewing machines today are produced for short-term use and very often they are unprofitable to repair, they are used until they break and then they are thrown in the trash, more or less the same with most household appliances.
I am also a fan of old metal home sewing machines, I prefer Bernina and Pfaff, original parts can be found on scraps, I sold parts on ebay for 5 years, people are looking for it, the biggest demand is in the USA, I left it because of procedural questions.

Can it be done with out alot of other stuff that has to come out first? Thank you in advance. The plastic-metal gear at 10:00 is very difficult for amateurs to replace, even sewing machine repair shops avoid it.
To replace it, almost everything in the upper part of the sewing machine must be removed.
Check if it's a crack,? there is a small line on the gear which very often looks like a crack.?
I rarely do this, this time I got a machine in excellent condition ("mint") with a broken timing belt and then I took advantage of the situation and performed a complete restoration.

I am restoring a pfaff 360 and I am trying to take the main shaft out, perhaps could you tell me how to take off the bushing for the handwheel since there is no pin in it to be removed as with the pfaff 230.Thanks for the answer.
So it's the bushing on the right side of the main shaft that the handwheel is mounted on.?
I can't remember about the Pfaff 360, I can't believe it doesn't have a pin like on the pfaff 230, the parts catalog shows that there is..?

@@MasinskiKutak Thanks for your fast reply .Yes I mean the right side of the shaft.I checked again but no pin there on the bushing and indeed the catalog (that I studied well )shows there should be a pin , but there is not. Perhaps it was changed in the past with a similar shaft from another model.I will try to look for other catalogs .I will follow your advise and work from the other side or maybe just leave it.Have a nice day.
I'm having trouble finding a parts list, or part numbers,my Pfaff 230 is missing the gray housing cover for the plastic gear behind the hook assembly and the 2 set screws that go to the hook assembly. Any help very much appreciated.
I have a parts catalog for the Pfaff 260, that assembly is identical to the Pfaff 230.
cover part number: 91-008 836-05
screws: 91-000 073-15
I'm not sure these numbers will help you, they are very rare parts, you can try to make the cover of spiral gear out of plastic, I don't think it's a problem.
