excellent point using volume pedal after compression. It makes huge difference since the volume can be controlled very precisely when the volume is controlled after compression.

Awesome info here, thank you! I got a Melobar 6-string lap steel about 20 years ago, and I've spent a good amount of time on it. BY FAR the most difficult part for me is the intonation when I'm playing with others. Playing by myself I get a false sense of awesomeness. Then I try to play with my band, and usually after about 20 seconds I claim the tuning keys are slipping and put it away.

I dabble in lap steel but haven’t spent much time on it... the tip about the tuning is pretty nice! I have been using C6 so I could get major and minor chords under the bar but it was so far away from open E tuning on a guitar that I was getting more confused than anything and was struggling a bit. Your hybrid tuning seems to make sense though! Same principal as C6 but with a tuning closer to a standard guitar. I may have to try it!
I’d love to see more lap steel videos in the future!

Regarding tuning; I really like the top-end of lapsteels, but I ran into the same problem with the E-open-tuning: Hard to do minor chords. So, I simply tuned the top e-string a half step down, and boom, I now have a G#minor on the top 3 strings, and a major on the buttom 5 strings I have an Emajor, as I can move as I please with the tonebar. Granted, the minor chords will be bright, but in my case I'm supported by a guitar, so the lapsteel adds texture in the top-end. Lapsteels are a blast!
