Thank goodness you had that problem with Tutbury Castle. It gives me another place of historical interest that I can avoid going to - with a clear conscience.
Tudbury Castle is definitely off my itinerary. That was unethical, rude and shabby treatment. The Castle staff should have lived up to their original permission and honored the paid admission.
As a local to Tutbury castle where Mary was held for some time and the Babbington plot with the beer barrels was exposed I can say that its not an easy place to get out of. Whilst the modern castle is in a slighted condition after the ECW it would have taken a lot of outside or inside help to get out and away from the hilltop castle. Leslie Smith is the curator but is employed by the Duchy of Lancaster. Id write and complain as she is happy to promote weddings and other events she does Mary in ( yes she is Mary) and after taking your money ( hope you got a refund Bruce) its a bit rich throwing you especially after saying it was ok. As a local though its no shock, Ill say no more. .

Oooh... Sounds like Tutbury Castle may not be getting a very big uptick in tourism this year. They say that the value of a satisfied person is a positive value of a small amount. The value of a person you have made angry is unknown but it's negative and very, VERY large... Thanks for a fascinating video, Bruce. I've loved your series on Mary, Queen of Scots.
Well, that place is off my list of places to visit upon my retirement trip to Scotland. Wishing you a very good February and good morning from America! Great Story Bruce.
Screwed on a full set-up? I feel your pain🤨. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt - too many times. But nice recovery, and thanks for another first class showing!🌟
I've spent a lot of time at Tutbury Castle in the past, including sleeping over many times in it. I've seen real fights, explosions, bagpipers and the only things I've not seen there were either ghosts or a curator without an ego the size of their mouth. But if you want a laugh, the last time I had dealings with the Duchy of Lancaster, their main person (other than the Queen) who ran the show was (drum roll) Prince Andrew! And just like Prince Andrew, Tutbury Castle is best left at a distance. I'll never go back either. Now onto the site of Sheffield Castle, (where Mary spent most of her time in England) and take a trowel and Sheffield Cathedral with the tombs of some of her courtiers. Then Sheffield Manor, where Mary went whilst they fumigated the castle :D
Ah Tutbury. You should have said you were heading so far south Bruce because I stay just down the road in Stafford. Would have been an honour to put you up for a couple of days. Excellent video again 👍

Mary Queen of Scots lived in exile with my family (ancestors) in Scotland. I visited the castle and her bed chamber. She wasn't in chains, but was living in exile
Thanks as always Bruce for your brilliant presentations. A lot of my aristocratic Scottish ancestors worked for Mary Queen of Scots and later lost their castles and had to flee later and not only because some of them were Catholic. And Aye you are famous Bruce!
Good morning Bruce, you could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw you standing outside of Tutbury Castle. I knew that place so well. I lived in Derby and about 30 - 40 years ago spent many weekends at concerts and events there, camping in the grounds. We got to know the then curator, Barry. In those days there was no security and Barry and his wife lived in the castle. He would have let you shoot there and would have gone out of his way to be helpful, he was just like that.We spent many an hour and money in the pub on the corner there, I think it was named after a big cat but the actual name escapes me.
Reputedly, on her way to Fotheringhay Mary passed through Coventry & was held in an upper room at the Bear Pub in the High St (now a branch of Barclays Bank) where she was said to be having conversations with conspirators through gaps in the walls & floor. Consequently she was removed to the Lady Mayoress’s apartments in St Mary’s Guildhall but again this was deemed unacceptable (possibly by the Lady Mayoress) & she was shunted off again to the Greyfriar’s Monastery (just outside of the Ringroad). Most questionable about these claims is that I doubt that any of these locations would be big enough to accommodate an entourage as big as you describe in the manner that they would have expected.

Tut-tut Tutbury. From 'time-pleasers' and 'jobs worths', may the Lord deliver us. The situation with our Queen of Scots always intrigues me. She was not Elizabeth's subject. She was not English. Her offence (if she had committed one) was not against England. It raised a religious, moral, political question that never got properly answered i.e. who has the right to try a monarch. The question arose again many decades later when Charles I faced a venomous parliament of the people and knew he had had his chips. Would France really have received Mary, I doubt it. I think she had become the political hot potato with an hereditary right to rule in England and she had landed on an English plate. Poor Mary. She should have gone for the escape plan but we'll never know now if it was flawless or not.
We need an online payment equivalent of Scottish fivers. That generally shits them up and used to restore a bit of balance to the jock baiting game. Or maybe today's thrashing at Twickers is proportionate revenge for the outrage of humiliation at Tutters🤣.

I don't know what Lesley Smith's problem is, she's on youtube dressed up as Mary, Queen of Scots at Tutbury castle already (not going to link it). Suspect she decided she wanted a few bob and decided she wasn't going to allow it. Seems very unprofessional since you had in fact paid, and are in fact giving free publicity to the spots you film (you'd think more people seeing Tutbury Castle would be something of interest to the curator).
Hi, I have just tried to email you about a collaboration opportunity, but it has bounced back saying your mail box is full. It's about the Vikings in Scotland, and my name is Bruce too, so its legit!
Hello (way distant) cousin Bruce! I've stumbled across some of Mary Queen of Scots enciphered letters that have recently been decoded. I though you might want a peek at them, and could put them into context. ua-cam.com/video/YRrDr6WfY4Y/v-deo.html
I’m sure it won’t get far, but I’ve actually put in a complaint to the castle. Seems totally wrong. Also can I add, I’m sorry your visit to England was so crap. Not all of us have such disregard to history.
@@CrackedCandy Of course. As we saw, Bruce was shown the door, when they clocked the camera. It occured to me, that if Mary pocketed a Minnox (you see, you won't catch me out. I know they didn't have digital back then.) she could have produced it, at an opportune moment when security was watching. If we can say 16th century security guards were as prosaic as their modern counterparts, she'd have been on the street, in short order. I see no flaw in this cunning plan.

Hi, I have just tried to email you about a collaboration opportunity, but it has bounced back saying your mail box is full. It's about the Vikings in Scotland, and my name is Bruce too, so its legit!
It's a constant battle deleting all the emails
oh dear Mary, men REALLY were her undoing weren't they?
Indeed
Get it in writing next time cousin!
He paid online, so he's got the receipts! 😁
Aye I've also got the phone logs confirming the telephone exchange was made
Hello (way distant) cousin Bruce! I've stumbled across some of Mary Queen of Scots enciphered letters that have recently been decoded. I though you might want a peek at them, and could put them into context.

Mary is relation, I'll have no visit there....
I’m sure it won’t get far, but I’ve actually put in a complaint to the castle. Seems totally wrong. Also can I add, I’m sorry your visit to England was so crap. Not all of us have such disregard to history.
Hey Zander you can't blame the whole of England
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Oh I know and I wasn’t- I’m from England and I just meant it’s a damn shame the way they treated you.
Haste ye back.
If Mary had the presence of mind to take her camera with her?
Aye
Maybe explain this joke?
@@CrackedCandy Of course. As we saw, Bruce was shown the door, when they clocked the camera. It occured to me, that if Mary pocketed a Minnox (you see, you won't catch me out. I know they didn't have digital back then.) she could have produced it, at an opportune moment when security was watching. If we can say 16th century security guards were as prosaic as their modern counterparts, she'd have been on the street, in short order. I see no flaw in this cunning plan.
@@CrackedCandy ... then she wouldn't have been imprisoned because they would have turfed her out. 😄
Mary Queen of Scots was totally hated by the Scots 😅 She was famously Catholic, and most Scots then were Presbyterian. 😊
Should do a video on the Scottish gypsys , maybe the history or gypsy glen would love that fan of your channel and from the gypsy community
That has actually crossed my mind
@@ScotlandHistoryTours would mean a lot to everyone of us trust me we have been here for the last 500 years plus Romany gypsys settled here from India scottish highlands are rich with gypsy history
