    Learn more about the music:
    Kaushiki Chakraborty’s astonishing vocal technique is the result of years of intense training. She spent much of her childhood living at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, one of India’s premiere music institutions, while her father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty worked there. Staff at the academy are said to recall how she would respond to melodic phrases at six months old, and how she was singing tarana and bhajan before the age of two. Quickly hailed as a prodigy, she entered the concert arena early to great acclaim, performing widely while also earning a Masters in Philosophy from Calcutta University.
    She hails from the Patiala gharana, known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate melodic ornamentation, and is one of the first female singers from her tradition to receive international recognition. Today she mainly focuses on classical music, but has also sung in films and recorded popular songs. She also leads Sakhi, a diverse group of female musicians and dancers, and explains that the project “is about understanding, from a female perspective, the diverse culture of India through all its traditional musical forms.”
    The interview is part of ‘Musical Wonders of India’ curated by Darbar and the V&A Museum in London. View the full online exhibition at www.darbar.org/wonders & www.vam.ac.uk/musicalwonders. If a few brief minutes of Kaushiki aren't enough…watch her full 57-minute performance of Raag Bhimpalasi in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/kaushiki-chakraborty-raag-bhimpalasi
    We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

    Very interesting to listen to. I'm not familiar with Indian music but I can tell she really is in tune with her instrument. She harmonizes with it really well. The way she glides from note to note has a very unique swell.

    This is incredible! I'm always impressed by the talent displayed by these musicians and now I listen to Indian classical a lot as a Westerner. The Tanpura is a really cool instrument. It gave me the idea of using the bass guitar as a drone instrument as the role can be imitated on the bass. Thank you so much for these videos!

      literally just tune to the key of the performance and keep playing each string at a constant rhythm. I think that's it.

    • @TejasM14
      @TejasM14 5 років тому +3

      @@oKirano No, much more to the beautiful instrument of the tanpura. The tanpura is a highly resonant instrument. So there are three things I would say are needed:
      1. Tuning to hear the harmonics.
      2. Correct finger pressure for a beautiful tone.
      3. Correct setup, (using thread) to allow for resonance.
      It isn't highly complex, but it isn't easy either. It takes quite a bit of practice to get these elements right.

    In this video, link below, from Darbar also, the presenter says that the first string is the Pancham, (the fifth note in the octave) whereas the 2nd and 3rd strings are the high Sa, and the 4th string, the lower Sa. (I like C Sharp for Sa, suits my voice better). KaushikiJi (she is awesome) says different, she says the first string is the Sa. Very confusing!

    Can someone please explain the part about the equally tempered scale?

    • @navalshastri
      @navalshastri 5 років тому +3

      An equal tempered scale is one which has all the notes placed at 12 equidistant positions. It was created for ease of changing scales and it helped jazz and many forms. Pythagorean scale has notes which are sonically in tune with Tonic i.e. it has 5th at 3/2times freq of Tonic. Equitempered notes are mathematically distributed in an octave and has nothing to do with resonance & satisfying completeness. That's why they are called 'dissonanating' notes. Worldwide there are cultures which had followed Similar tunings but for standardisation equal tempered tuning was adapted. Indian classical music has Notes from Pythagorean as well as Just Intonation tunings. In all it adds up to 22 Shruti(notes) which are exclusively used according to Raag being played. Many old composers used different tunings earlier. Acapella or Choral singers always do harmonies according to natural Pythagorean tuning unless accompanied by piano which is tuned to equi tempered tuning.
      Earlier the tuning was not possible in digital keyboards and MIDI but lately it is possible to tune keyboard and DAW softwares according to Pythagorean tuning. P.S. there are many different tunings in the world, it's interesting to study these and know what music sounds in those tunings.

    Pandit Mallikaarjun Mansur: "Without sitting under the Bodhi tree of the Tanpura, a singer cannot achieve sound enlightenment (naad nirvaana)."
    Pandit Kumar Gandharva: "I am not singing my own music. I am just listening to the Tanpura and singing whatever it asks me to sing."
    (I am not quoting their exact words, I am just paraphrasing from memory.)
    In Indian terminology the Tanpura harmonics are called Svayambhoo svara-s = self born notes. Before sound pollution, some musicians used to say they heard 13 individual notes in addition to the 4 played notes. And when probed some of them said that their own Guru-s in the early 19th century -- before machines -- could hear 30 of those nature-created notes.
