Suggestion: keep your chicken feed in a metal trash can. It keeps out the mice and other critters. Do you have water running into the area? Put it underground freeze level. Make it handy to water them otherwise it will be a big chore carrying water in the winter. I didn't realize how noisy chickens are. When they lay their eggs they cackle loudly. We have nesting boxes attached to the outside of the coop. So we don't have to enter the run to get eggs. We keep a separate set of shoes for walking in the run so we don't bring any poo into the house. Store the straw for the nesting boxes on that raised platform. You'll have plenty of used straw and poo to make compost. They have solar doors on timers to let chicken in and out so you don't have to manually open it for them. I like to make it convient, maybe you don't. Painting the wire mesh and the frames black and putting wire on top was genius. Looking good, Mike!
Exactly what I was going to say. In Nebraska, we also buried hardware cloth and lined the outside of the coop with Hotwire. Never had a break in but saw several try. Red foxes, raccoons, skunks, neighbors dog, huge bull snake, owl. Everything wants to eat a chicken.
In NE, once our birds were feathered, we never used a heat lamp. So long as they can get up off the ground to roost and sit on their feet, they’ll be fine. When it would get really cold, We’d put Vaseline on their combs and wattles. Worked well. Also made them warm oatmeal on those days. Now that we’ve moved back to Texas I’m thinking it’s too HOT for chickens! Ha!!!!😂😂
I agree with laying boxes accessible from the outside. The entire inside will be lined with poop after a short time and it would be tedious to always change your shoes. Much simpler to be able to have a quick check for eggs. Otherwise, I love it! Very inspiring 👍🏼
Amazing job!! You have a great eye for creativity. Im no expert, but from what I've watched others do, the coop will need something stronger than chicken wire since you have fox and raccoons. I think its called 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Also, the hardware cloth will need to extend underground and out to keep predators from the 3 piece and a biscuit buffet. 😊
FANTASTIC job!!! I love it all. I have never had chickens, but a coworker has raised them for decades. Based on his experiences I will offer a few suggestions which you may have also thought of. 1. My coworker ordered the eggs and hatched them under lights. It was not until the baby chicks grew older that he was able to tell which were roosters and hens. He gave away the roosters as they are loud. 2. Predators will dig under the fence so bury chicken wire under ground so they can’t get under. 3. When daily collecting eggs he would find on an occasional basis, black snakes in the nesting boxes. Be prepared to deal with those. 4. Have a plan of what to do with the hens when they get old and no longer produce eggs, as you will have plenty of “pet” hens that will cost you money but not produce eggs. I wish you the best, I love your enthusiasm. ❤❤
I have a garden and chickens and I'm so excited for your chickens to arrive! I love that the run is semi-hidden! So secret. You will need seating near them so you can be with your flock. I would highly suggest changing the chicken wire to hardware cloth and the ceiling needs covering too. Chicken wire is to keep chickens in but hardware cloth keeps predators out. I have an automatic programmable chicken door I got from temu that's been awesome for a year. With ventilation I added fans on timers in the summer inside the coop. All your ventilation needs hardware cloth screens.
Another awesome project! No worry about too much whimsey, you always seem to hit it perfectly! I agree with the suggestion about being able to access the laying boxes from outside, as well as in.
First week in our new home the grands spotted a pair of bald eagle pole height checking on the bird life here. I will have to restructure my cover as it was quick install. Great job on your new addition. Super nice
I love the whimsy of it all.. it has so much character and the birds aren't even here yet. I'm sure you've gathered plenty suggestions and advice but I do want to stress the burying of hardware cloth around the entire perimeter of coop. I also use an expensive predator-proof netting on top of coop. So much fun!
So darling! Can't wait to see what critters you bring in. Love your rock walkway. My experience with mine is that chickens will dig out the dirt around them looking for bugs, so sometimes I have to reset them and push dirt back around them. Chickens are so relaxing and addictive to watch. They are such characters and another interesting thing is the different sounds they make- one that makes me think of R2D2. I currently have a big rooster that sounds like the chicken version of Jimmy Stewart when he crows. I'll be curious to see what other fowl you get! New to your channel, but I'm definitely hooked!

Oh my gosh! how cute is this! the curve, painting the chicken wire, wow wow. Who would have thought! #chickenalley mansion, they will love it! i also see this being a future playhouse for dare I say.. grandkids hahahaa, Genie :)
I absolutely love what you have done with the coop. I am sure you're going to put something around the base to prevent the critters from digging and crawling in, or else you will be losing your hens to Critters. Just when I thought my coop was totally safe, a large snake went right through one of those holes and got all my baby chicks. Living in the city, we had never seen a snake until we got our hens. The next day, I had workers put what they called hard wire (little squares)all over my chicken wire. Never knew snakes could stretch themselves so skinny to slide in. No more issues after that. Good luck.
It's super cute. As a long time chicken owner I gotta warn you. Every predator you mentioned can easily dig under your cup and thr tree behind there will just make it really easy for them to get over in there. I know you said your gonna do a top but I felt certain you would work around the tree and not take it down. Just food for thought.
I have my run around a tree and used hardware cloth and boards surrounding the tree. He can keep the tree and make it predator proof. But hardware cloth!
Mike, I love how creative you are, and the fact that your wife Jesse, enthusiastically supports your creativity is wonderful. I totally agree with you about doing something different from everyone around you. With that attitude, I sometimes (lots of times) get the cart before the horse as my dad would say. You inspired me to add some whimsey to my small garden. Wanted to find some old fence sections to put behind some plants. Etsy had a ton of options. I love how it turned out. I'm also in love with the coop.
Oh you’ve done such an amazing job Mike, what a great idea to paint the chicken wire … it just made it disappear! I wouldn’t have thought of that. This is all pure charm, the best chicken coop I’ve ever seen 🧡 if you do use the little side cupboard as your feed store, maybe you can keep it all secure in large plastic tubs with lids so nothing can get at it?
You definitely have a creative flare!! Everything is so pretty. I'm thinking the Hobbit door will be very clumsy to enter and exit; looks like a tumble waiting to happen. I'd put the chicken wire across it on the inside for air flow, but use the back door for going in and out. Can't wait to see what you do next!!
You might like to add coverage to the top more wire to keep out hawks raccoons etc…because you have a dirt floor we do too I add straw and let them rummage thru it the straw keeps the ground dry thru the rains chickens hate their feet to be wet I’ve learned
I was going to suggest running some corrugated metal panels partially buried along the bottom too so foxes and other animals can't dig under the wire. We have coyotes where we live and groundsquirrels which will dig under. Raccoons will kill chickens too.
I went to a rock place and the stones were from another job site that the owner didn’t care for anymore. I made them an offer and the brought them home.
@@moxiegardens8033 Thanks! They are so great and I haven’t seen anything like them in my stone yards around here in PA. I have a small suburban garden with tricky slopes and they would be perfect for me to carve out pathways, retain soil and play with structure. Lucky find.
Very cute and super charming. My husband and i have raised chickens for a good part of 20 years. Weve also dabbled with peafowl ( guineas, peacock etc) , ducks, turkeys you name it. It seens like you are one to do youre research so im not going to say a bunch about birds but i will say starting with babies can be very fun and rewarding but also more work as far as keeping them warm for a while even when you think they would be fine without the heat. Oh and peacocks cant be around chickens when they are young. Something about they are prone to getting sick if introduced to chickens too early. I cant remember exactly but they also arent suppose to have their feet touch ground until they are of a certain age. Peacocks that is. They were hard for me to raise and ended up after i got them good and grown they escaped and flew off. 500$ flew off. Anyways enjoy your precious coop and i cant wait to see who gets to live there.
Oh and i just thought about it and was thinking the polish chicken variey would be super cute in that coop. I use to raise buff lace polish. So fun and cool with their out there hair do. Plus they lay a good size white egg. But i also like little bantums and silkies. Theres so many to choose from all depends on your preferance.
I love chicken coops! I have one in my backyard but not nearly as adorable as this one! No chickens though 😂 y’all need a chicken keeper cause I could live here too❤❤❤ Question: With this layup the front door will always stay closed? I keep my peanuts and birdseed in metal trash cans too. Mice are horrible
You should also burry a base of hardware cloth around the edges so nothing can dig in! Especially around the door.

I hope you don’t have any trouble with predators a raccoon can go right through that chicken wire. Always use hardware cloth.❤
I've heard if you paint the under side of the porch roof sky or light blue, bees think its sky, and won't build a nest there. Maybe Google that one.
Predators will also dig under that run so barriers should be installed at least 12-18 inches into the ground on that perimeter.

That stinks.
That’s great. Chicken crap stinks. Hope this guy asked his close next door neighbor if having chickens
was ok with them!
You wanna be extremely careful mixing your birds. Chickens are very vulnerable to disease. Just a thought.
Living in Florida has probably made me jaded, but I can't help but wonder how long before the neighbor with the deck complains about the noise of the hens and that the coop ruins their view... of your yard.

Gotta be careful painting chicken wire. Chickens peck at the wire if there are bugs on it or drops of water. If that paint flakes off it could kill the chickens.
You need ventilation in there at all times, not just when you have the door open, for healthy birds.
