I use tap to pay in my pixel. In my experience, this feature is a bit risky.
For instance, card theriama tholanjudhu naa neenga card ah block panradhu kula ...someone would have withdrawn the money using tap to pay, without needing PIN. Same if you lose your phone and you dont have screen lock in it.
Currently in our chennai metro using nfc technology.

Now we can use our phone to make payments instead of card .. there are lot of use cases .. we no need to stand in the metro queue .. just use our phone to pay .. in future bank won’t issue card … we can use our phone for multi purpose.. hotel key , car key , house digital lock key .. office access and much more

Small scale merchants can still accept NFC payments via their mobile. Since both Customers' and Merchants' mobiles are equipped with NFC chips it is completely viable.
Mid end models (Like xiaomi civi 14, Moto Edge 50 pro) are coming with NFC chip these days. And Google has released their Google Wallet in indian market recently and i see samsung already has their own wallet. Add the debit/credit cards to the phones to make use of NFC (tap to pay) where applicable.

Yes NFC is very user friendly -> i agree with that, but we want to consider a security perspective also. That means unauthorised transactions or communications done by the your hardware without your knowledge.
No u have to open the app and select the card then only the nfc will activate
Even there is a NFC on off button in your quick settings panel.

samsung user ah na samsung wallet 3 years ah idha use panitu iruken many times idhu enna save paniruku network illama upi la server busy ah irundhu, yesterday kuda oru store la network illa suthama idha vachi dhan pay panen tap and pay with nfc always great. In apple they are not ready to release their API and work models in their NFC setup is due to they dont want others to reverse engineer and make it hackable. Although their build is available in internet. So for now NFC is fine atleast with Apples Implementation and with future iteration they will only make it harder. However NFC usage in Android build is a different scenario.
