How to fix Honda K series idle issue * idle air control valve IACV* Civic EP3 issue

- Hi everyone,
Here is a video I made on how to solve the hunting idle issue I had on my civic type r EP3 / honda k series engine whereby a dirty IACV makes the cars revs fluctuate which is a common thing on these cars.
Ive cleaned mine out and the car seems to be back to normal, please note this is my way of doing it and if you attempt this it will be at you own risk.

Many thanks for this ! Just cleaned out the IACV and did the K-Tuned IAAV delete as well after seeing your follow-up. Mine also had the issue of the revs bouncing between tick over and around 3,000 rpm after non being driven in ages. Last time a good VTEC session cleared it, but wouldn't fix it this time, so I had to clean the IACV. It wasn't too bad for a 53 plate, but I did find a piece of Aluminium swarf inside the IACV which must have been occasionally jamming the rotating part, so cleaned it all out. One of the hardest parts was pulling off the coolant lines, and undoing the TB studs and nuts after nearly 20 years of installation!
I did take out my Tegiwa CAI and battery to get easier access, as I also had a hydraulic clutch issue to fix, and the clutch bleed point is right below the TB, so two birds with one stone. Sucked out all the old sludgy clutch fluid with a vacuum brake bleeder, and refilled with new DOT 3, and clutch now working again!
Took the opportunity to install an Acuity TPS sensor I've had for ages, and a Tegiwa thermal TB PTFE gasket.
It now ticks over like a dream, and hasn't been like this since around 2005. The Honda dealer used to blame my Hondata KPro for the surging LOL !
Top tip for anyone carrying this out down under - you can get the 5 point torx bits for the IACV from you local Supercheap - 'Toledo Torx Bit Set 5 Point' to save having to slot the bolt heads with a Dremel
Great stuff mate!! You've been busy but its better to do all those things in the same area and hopefully never have to go back. Dealers make any excuse they can once they see a mod on a car. Enjoy mate
This fixed my beloved ep3 right up! Thanks for the video 👍
Great stuff mate👍🏼
Great Video, very helpful, Thanks!
Thanks Bro👍🏼
Thanks for the video this definitely helped me out
Glad it helped you bro👍🏼
It worked! Mine was gummed up and it solved it!
👌🏼great stuff mate.
My car has the same issue. Going to watch this video a few times and sort it tomorrow. Thanks for the helpful video mate 👍
No worries mate, lets hope this sorts it.
The bolts bucket, my favorite one 😁, full of useful, nice and strong bolts 💪
Ha ha ha can tell you a long time subscriber! Thanks for watching mate hope you keeping well.
@@Mk4heavenHD Thanks mate, everything is OK 👍
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Karson Donovan Instablaster =)
Well explained 👍
Cheers mate🙏🏽
I’m gonna try this tomorrow I hope this finally helps I’ve been getting so frustrated not being able to figure it out
What is yours doing ? Is it bouncing when u come to a stop ? Mines is doing that and I can’t figure it out
Hi, Give it a clean and if this doesn’t sort it watch the next video that I made because mine started it’s possessed revving up and down AGAIN 🤔 which I discovered to be the IAAV idle air assist valve. ua-cam.com/video/kU76h0ztLr0/v-deo.html Hope this helps
@@SneakerBrainz yeah it is I’m gonna just replace the whole throttle body and sensors
@@rosespence8397 did that work ? What sensors ? The IAT sensor ?
@@SneakerBrainz mine is doing the same thing please tell me what you did !!
Hey thanks a lot. My ep3 k20a3 was doing this but a lot worse. Eventually it died. Today I tapped it with a hammer during the carb cleaner process. I could not separate the throttle body from the Lower unit. I have Philips screws not bolts like yours :( and they're oxidized. But my car doesn't idle 1500 any more and no more surge.
You welcome mate, hope it runs better.
Nice!!
👍🏼 Thanks
awesome channel bud, great content! You originally from SA?
Thanks bro, originally from zim.
@@Mk4heavenHD one and the same lol 👊
I don’t think it’s necessary to remove the actuator portion from the valve in order to clean the rotating assembly. No intake air/carbon can pass thru the bearing shaft to the sensor/actuator. Please comment why you remove that, I think the anti-tamper screws are an indicator it doesn’t need removed to service the valve.
Hey man where did you get your red steering wheel emblem? Is it the j’s racing one? I heard they wouldn’t fit
Hi mate, the ep3 type r comes with that emblem as stock.
I replaced all the sensors and it's still giving me p0505 code. And it idles rough. I did an engine swap and I used the old crankshaft sensor, do you think that could be it? I swapped from a k20a3 to an k20a, when I got the engine the guy said it should all bolt up. It did but I didn't change crankshaft sensor.
Not sure buddy I’ve never dealt with that code coming up.
Please help me someone … I ran my OBD was getting P0113 and some 02 sensor codes … I got a new IAT sensor and that helped for a while but now it’s idililing high at like 16-1800 rpm while in neutral .. it also seems like the RPMS are dropping really fast when I shift causing shifting to be awful .. someone please help😢
Never had this issue before mate, have you checked for any vacuum leaks or boost leaks? Not sure why it would behave like that.
Saludos como puedo encontrar en el mercado esa pieza IAC, le pasalo mismo a mi carro
Brilliant video bro! i had the same problem haha!
Thanks bro, now way lol this seems to be a common on these k series engines.
Will this cause the eml to go on?
Not sure mate
Changed all the gaskets, cleaned and replaced idle air control valve many time still doing the surge.
This can happen and ive made another video to kill the surge ua-cam.com/video/kU76h0ztLr0/v-deo.htmlsi=PG69g7buNy2ypiyt.. This fixed the issue for good lol.
Thumbs up for that 👍
You welcome man👍🏼
i think this is a common issue in all hondas I have cl7 2,4 and also struggle with this same issue
it must be for sure.
Can anyone please help if they know anything about this, I had my k20 parked up without running it for a couple of months, before it was parked it was fine. Had the injectors out for those few months and when I put them back in and jumpstarted it, it was fine until it warmed up then it idles at 1100 up to 2300 rpm and just up and down, tried to do pcm idle reset on it but for part of that you need to keep it at 3000 rpm and the car wouldn't let me it kept going to 3800 rpm as soon as I barely touched it and instead of getting any lower it went straight back to the 1100 - 2300
Have a feeling its going to be this issue in the video with the part not spinning, I'm only looking for other things to check for as I'm not great with these.
@@seano6602 Hi mate sorry for the late reply. My first guess would be the that the IACVmight not be turning and full of gunk my second guess is the IAAV idle air assist valve and I’ve made a video on this one too as my car worked for a day after cleaning the throttle body and started hunting it’s idle again. Turned out my IAAV was the issue. If you check through my videos you will see IAAV delete that’s the one.
hey bro. How did this fix hold up?
Hi Bro this fix was only half my issue, if you watch my video on the iaav delete that was the final thing my car needed to stop the issue.
@@Mk4heavenHD alright thanks for the help man
My idle drops under its set factory Idle range. So what is that ?
Not too sure mate, I’m sure there is a way to adjust that through the tps or ecu if you have a aftermarket hondata ecu.
@@Mk4heavenHD which I don’t. But what can be causing this issue
The 2 screws that hold the valve in are just seized for me 😂
Oh no!! Hondas are notorious for seized bolts and nuts that shear just by looking at them lol..
