In this episode: London Crime investigations manager, Satti is investigating reports of some communal garages being used for an unlicensed car repairs business. Backed by a team of 30 Met police officers and two car recovery companies, he breaks an unauthorized lock and unearths what appear to be a huge illegal operation.
Meanwhlie, In Sheffield, civil enforcement officers Billie and Saftar seize a van with multiple outstanding parking tickets. The owner is none too pleased as he only recently purchased the vehicle and claims to have no knowledge of the fines, but the van is removed by the recovery company.

That unlicensed garage didn't happen overnight, its the local government problem that they didn't keep up on the property and as the person said he was doing that for years.

We need a means of anonymous reporting for these illegal garages so that residents can report such eyesores. I'd be investigating their taxes too, 😅
I rented out my house when working abroad, each time I was in the UK on leave I arranged with the tenants to visit the property. Firstly, to satisfy the property was being used within the agreed terms and secondly to arranged for any defects to the property not caused by the tenant were repaired.
I cannot understand why the Greenwich Council were not checking the garage block on regular intervals, especially as not all were rented, which is lost revenue to the council. The council would be liable for building repairs, yet they were not taking any care of them. Not evening checking the yard was kept clean. it's no wonder tenants and others dump stuff. Personally, I would be ashamed to admit what has happened at that site and senior council management needs to be taking to account on this mismanagement.
@@TheByardthey have had severe cuts to staffing and so much of this crap they can’t possibly keep up. They have a heavy burden of proof and then police need to be available to support the action. Everyone else has to be licensed and get a proper garage and equipment.
@@candacecurtis5739 Then they should sell the garage blocks off as other councils have done. Giving the adjacent council tenants first choice. I rented one just 2 mins from my house in Gloucestershire back in the 90s. A local businessman bought them and took very good care of them. renting was on the understanding a council renting tenant requesting a garage could mean me giving it up. But those who purchased a house, but no garage could not demand this.
What's up with crushing seized cars after 14 days? They don't have police auctions in the U.K.?
yeah i was thinking this is EXTREMELY wasteful. i mean they could dismantle and sell the vehicles parts in a legal market for cheap and displace the illegal parts market.
@@ToniMortonit’s a ton of work and storage when there is no room for keeping those around. It is a fantastic deterrent for those who can afford storage to actually pay for and get their vehicles out!

Wow - I don't understand the system. Is it way too expensive to insure a vehicle in Britain OR are the drivers just that irresponsible? How is all this negligence, disrespect or entitlement bred? In UK Insurance, it's up to the sky. I drive a wolkswagen Polo 2018 1.2 petrol 90hp. I have a full driving license for 13 years. I am 31 years old . Insurance = £1632/YEAR just for me the basic rate , if I have to add my wife will go up to £1900/YEAR + £50 road tax. I pay rent £1200/month . £300 bills/month. Food basket £450/month. Council tax £120/month .
You are looking from ... start from £100/month. For the simple basic mandatory insurance. And you are paid £11/h before tax
You'd think someone who could afford that long, expensive vehicle with no MOT would be organised enough to get an MOT before the previous one expires! 65 million other people manage it! There's no excuse - not the length of the vehicle, nor the time given before crushing it (which I think should be 48 hours, not 15 days!) MOT = roadworthy and how do you get it to a garage if it's not roadworthy? Tow it or drive it... And the odds are high that he'll drive it without tax, MOT or insurance.
You can drive to an MOT if you have an appointment, as long as it's the nearest and the shortest route.
I certainly wouldn't want to come out with over 30 cops at my door! LOL

In many other low cost countries, these cars still have a 30-40 year life span that can be added on them than crushing them

Not his land. He is living in government assisted housing. Also most major cities have many codes and permits to operate a an auto shop. He was also not working on his own car. Some people really just refuse to understand I guess

What I don't understand is the comment that was made for the charges is the local council has to pay for all this unless the offender pays the fines. Why don't they auction off all the cars weekly instead of actually crushing them, especially if they are drivable. Seems the council could recover all the money plus some for the people who don't pay for the recovery. Surely used car dealers would be willing to buy them. CoPart would make a killing in the UK.
Can't the vehicles not redeemed be sold rather than crushed if they are fixable or are operational ???

Same as in the US. If you crash into someone, your insurance will cover their damages.

A wast of money, you didn't notice for five year that a derelict parking area for the residents was used to fix cars for the locals, and now the city will spend thousands to stop it. The bylaw enforcement could have given a fine, and said anything here after 30 days will be confiscated. It must be close to election time.

The man with the van with the outstanding tickets…..if I buy a used vehicle, I get it registered in my name and new license tags as soon as possible. The tickets follow the license tags not the vin number, or at lest in USA.

Untaxed and no insurance vehicle should not be out on road running and drivers should be held accountable not just impounding paying fines it should be dealt harsher. So much resources just to get this guy but the untouchable smash and grab criminals are still out there.
What's untaxed mean
They don't just pay the inpound fine. They get fined for no tax / licence / insurance, etc, and penalty points, etc.
You have a cheek, standing on your pedestal and spouting about your land. In your own words, he has been operating out of it for years. You have been neglectful in your responsibilities to your tax payers. You have failed to monitor lands, paid for with their tax dollars, and have allowed it to decay, into rack and ruin. Heads should roll and jobs should be lost over this neglect.

Not if it isn't in an area with an appropriate collection system for any runoff etc. Home shops are allowed but you have to follow similar regulations to authorized mechanics IE no porous flooring, waste collection systems isolated from rainwater collection (i.e. no letting engine oil etc into the storm drains) etc. If where you are from you are just allowed to roll out your car in your drive and lift the engine out I would say that it is you guys that have irresponsible rules.
Of course you can, but not on someone else's land!
@@NibininThat's actually not correct at all - servicing your own car in UK, at home, doesn't make you liable to H&S regs apart from disposal of fluids, etc.
@@John-G I can only speak from experience in agriculture and we were forced to build a concrete pad to do any work on so that no oil, etc, would drip into soil. Maybe DEFRA is stricter than local councils...
@@Nibinin Because "agriculture" was your business so you have to comply with DEFRA rules. There are NO such rules for someone just working on their own car at home.

If it's "communal" property it's obviously very different as H&S rules inevitably and correctly apply as what you do directly affects others.
