    I worked at DiscoVision in Carson CA 1981 and we had more rejects than good pressings. quality control was difficult. We would actually play a clear disc directly from the mold presser and determine if the master was defective. from there the clear disc went to the metalizing dept to have the coating baked on. after that the two sides were glued together. another quality control check was done to view the finished disc. hundreds of rejected disc were discarded daily.

    For me, the Holy Grail of dead sides would be the copy of Jesus Christ Superstar with footage from the unreleased Andromeda Strain disc.

  • @TheMediaHoarder
    @TheMediaHoarder 6 років тому +36

    The "P5" error means the disc isn't coded to the laserdisc standards and is likely a General Motors disc. It will play on players made before 1995 or so, or on any later Pioneer player if you have the service remote to put it in Test mode. What model player are you using?
    I've been uncovering these sides for over 20 years, I use a TON of paper towels and let them SOAK in the rubbing alcohol. It gets easier over time. I ruined one disc using alcohol that was too strong and put a crack in it, better to use the weaker stuff and go over the disc more than once with it if you have to. Most important part to clean is the center so the player can recognize the disc and start playing.

      I'll have to try it on my 1987 Pioneer after I move. It did have some (existing) clouding on that disc, so it may just be a lost cause.

      Also I wonder if a pre 1980 LD player like the OLD Pioneer with an HeNe laser instead of the semiconductor LED system would punch through? Those could play really bad discs better than the LED systems could. More power I guess?

    • @TheMediaHoarder
      @TheMediaHoarder 6 років тому +4

      The top-loading players are actually better with old discs than the later players. I keep a few around just for them.

    • @deathstrike
      @deathstrike 6 років тому +4

      Exactly! The top loaders like the Pioneer (no Magnavox they just had too many problems) did indeed handle poorer quality discs. I know they went to the laser diode due to cost, and for the most part they did their job. But those old top loading tanks, they really were well built!!

    I think some of the industrial discs only worked on certain players. Maybe the Tom Sawyer disc would play in a really old machine.
    My favorite dead side will always be the turtle.

    • @WOSArchives
      @WOSArchives 6 років тому +3

      Ben mentioned some clouding on the disc he couldn't remove. What most likely happened was that the previous owner who attempted this didn't dry out the rubbing alcohol quickly enough, thus clouding out the disc. It's unfortunate, but I doubt that even a fully restored PR-7820 would be able to play it.

    • @Redspl
      @Redspl 6 років тому +1

      IMO a high end machine may be still able to play it, but we'll probably never know.
      BTW, what Turtle?

    • @plasquatch

      Search for "laserdisc turtle."

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 5 років тому +3

      Some industrial discs used MCA coding for player control. Consumer players will not play MCA coded discs since they are made to comply with the LaserVision standard, which uses Philips coding.
      That said, it's possible that the dead side which wouldn't play may also not play on a machine that can work with MCA coding or a player that doesn't pay attention to any control codes at all, such as the Pioneer LD-660.
      The Pioneer player that was used to attempt playback threw a P5 error code, indicating that the player couldn't read any signal off of the disc. In the case of a dead side, this may be a sign of a defective pressing that was so bad that it wouldn't play at all.
      In the case of a good MCA coded disc, the same player would be able to lock onto the track, but would abort playback after about 5-10 seconds because it couldn't read a control code it could recognize when trying to read the TOC. An error code would be invoked, but it wouldn't be a P5 since the player could read a signal off of the disc but couldn't detect a recognizable control code.

    • @und4287
      @und4287 5 років тому

      The GM discs were designed for the PR-7820 player. Some older players will be able to play the disc, but without trick play functionality.

    Those covers are well and truly hideous. I get wanting branding, but like 66% of the cover is branding with only a fraction showing what the actual program is. Geez, MCA.

      The whole thing is weird.
      From the Spirograph deal at the very beginning to the busy "in case you didn't see it on the case" discovision intro, the format branding is a train wreck... Even to the point I keep rewinding to watch it.

  • @WOSArchives
    @WOSArchives 6 років тому +13

    By the looks of it, the previous person who attempted to uncover the dead side of Tom Sawyer did indeed half-ass it, as they didn't try to clean up after themselves, allowing the rubbing alcohol to cloud out the disc (which will happen if they don't dry it out before it's too late). The clouding is unremovable, unfortunately.
    My DiscoVision copy of 1941 has side 2 of Animal House on it's dead side. It's a very interesting part of DiscoVision collecting as you'll never really know what's on the dead side until you check it out.

    A P5 error code on your newer Pioneer player means that the player couldn't sense a signal off of the disc for whatever reason, so it couldn't close the servo loop and begin playback.
    Most likely reasons:
    1. You didn't clean off all of the residue on the dead side; you cleaned off enough for the player to sense the disc, but not enough for the optical servo to lock onto a track and close the servo loop to play the disc.
    2. A defective pressing that was so bad that it can't be played, which would explain why it was rejected and repurposed as a dead side. It's important to note that not all DiscoVision dead sides are playable.

    • @imrustyokay

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 4 роки тому

      @@imrustyokay Well, if the clouding is still preventing the disc from being played as intended by DiscoVision despite the effort to clean it off, then it's hardly half-assed. Just saying.

    "The Touch of Love" is one that I have in my collection. I believe it's possible to find different programs on the dead sides of some titles. I'd have to check but I believe the dead side of my copy of "The Touch of Love" has one of the sides of "Psycho." Everything plays perfectly except near the end of the dead side, which has laser lock. I have the spyrograph style logo on several DiscoVision titles.

    I recently managed to get hold of a copy of the DiscoVision version of' Frenzy' for £10. Side 6 is the same 'Jaws' side as the Tennis disc. I think that this set was recalled because of a manufacturing error on side 5, because every frame is encoded as a separate chapter stop making that side unplayable as you have to press play for every frame.

    • @und4287
