The wire from the battery is a 4 gauge wire. That goes to a fused distribution box. The wire to the lights themselves is 18 gauge. Over 2,000ft of wiring was used in this install and every connection is soldered.
In this video, Mike is preparing to finalize the emergency vehicle light wiring of our 2013 Dodge Charger demo vehicle. By watching this video, viewers can learn LED light troubleshooting tips, installation tips, and learn how to successfully finalize the wiring of your emergency vehicle or POV.
Connecting Wires on the Trunk Tray of the Charger
This video begins with Mike, our installation expert, working on the trunk tray of the Charger. The 4 Black boxes at the beginning of the video are the BR-8 control boxes that go to the switches in the car to control the lights. As you can see, (0:35), Mike has already pulled all the wires through to the trunk of the vehicle and has already installed the switch boxes and other power equipment on the trunk tray of the vehicle.
    Connect Wires to Proper Locations
As this is a trade show demo car each of our lights are independtly controlled. To begin the final stages of wiring, Mike begins by installing the proper wires into the control boxes.
    Use Cable Ties for Organization
After the emergency vehicle lights have been installed correctly, use cable ties to keep the wires organized. It is also a good idea to clip excess cable ties so that the tie doesn't interfere with other wires.
Use Heat Shrink Tubes to Ensure Wire Insulation Stays Put
To ensure wires stay exactly where they are supposed to, use heat shrink tubes. When you are satisfied with the placement of the heat shrink tubes a small butane torch can be used to melt the tubes. For best results, heat shrink tubes should be added wherever wires are cauterized together and in any locations that installers don't want to move under normal use.
    Use a Label Maker
As Mike completes the wiring progress, he uses a label maker to ensure he can keep all the wires organized. In fact, the importance of labeling your emergency lighting wires cannot be stressed enough. Not only does this help during the installation process, but it will also help in the future if you need to make repairs.
Connect Wires to the Power Source
For power, Mike adds connector tips to the ends of wires and connects the wires to the power source.
Secure the Wires in the Vehicle
After Mike has successfully installed the wires to the power source, he ensures that the wires will not move throughout the vehicle. This is important because if the wires were permitted to move in the vehicle, it could cause the vehicle's LED lights or sirens to malfunction. As you can see in the video, (7:06), Mike secures the wires with cable ties to metal supports in the Charger.
    Admire Your Work
When completed, the intimidating amount of wires that you began with should all be connected to the appropriate power source and tied neatly together.
Installation Tips from 911 Signal USA's Installation Expert
    • Take your time and check your work. One of the most important processes in the final wiring of an emergency vehicle is to take your time and check your work. This is important because completing all this work and having to redo it because something went wrong along the way is a waste of time and a huge blow to the ego.
    • Have a huge supply of cable ties and heat shrink tubes. As you can see in the video, Mike used many heat shrink tubes and cable ties. Making sure you have this equipment on hand before you begin will ensure that your install can proceed without having to stop for more supplies, or worse, proceeding without the cables ties or heat shrink tubes.

The four boxes that the installer is putting wires into at the very beginning of the video.. what are those?

Nick Piccoli Hi Nick! Thanks for asking. The 4 Black boxes at the beginning of the video are the BR-8 control
boxes that go to the switches in the car to control the lights. As this
is a trade show demo car, each of our lights are independently controlled.

911 Signal USA Just a question but do you always use 4 gauge wire to the power to distributor box and also just wondering but some say to put the terminal circuit breakers near the battery but noticed you have it near the distributing box, does it really matter where they go?.

I have a question. I have all my red wires going to the battery. Can you do a video or give me instructions on how/where to wire the red wires other than the battery cause it's killing my battery.

Mario De La Rosa if all your "red wires" have a combined usage of under 30amps then you should look at the Havis Charge Guard, it will disrupt power to your equipment if your voltage drops below a certain level (you can set the level yourself)
