I really like the reflection inherent to Samus. Like, she kind of feels like a personification of "beware when fighting monsters that you do not become a monster yourself". She goes on a planetwide genocide like Ridley, with the main difference being that when she comes across a harmless (even friendly) Metroid specimen, instead of laughing at its weakness and putting it down, she takes it and embraces it. She ends up exploding basically every planet she ever goes to. When she faces the SA-X as part Metroid, it's literally a reflection of what she was, not just a corruption. She's the Metroid running from the scary space goddess born of technology and genetic alteration. And she literally becomes part Metroid and maybe even part X, and at the end of Dread it becomes clear that she's the most powerful Metroid to ever live, but she still retains her humanity. I think that's what makes her such a cool and interesting hero, is that she refuses to abandon a certain softness inherent to humanity.
@@Teknanam though if you think about it, her tendency to absorb abilities from them arguably means at least some part of the X-Core might still live on, though that’s honestly more just a personal theory than anything.

And I don't think that the Alimbic Cluster Oubliette can be considered a planet.
Samus keeps needing the help of animals to escape from exploding bases in her ship. She should maybe install some voice controlled autopilot on that thing one of these days
She's been stuck with the one BSL provided her for both of those without having the opportunity to replace her hyper-customized ship from Metroid Prime 1 through the opening of Fusion.

Apparently, due to a grave translation error that was left unchecked, the Federation wasn't the one responsible for what happens in Fusion and Other M. I think the Metroid DNA that comes up in Fusion was actually collected during Other M… I seem to recall it being a plot point that the Federation’s decontamination procedure allowed them to harvest cells from her power suit from when the baby Metroid was killed directly above her. That’s presumably how they were also able to clone Ridley, though I’ve never been clear on why they did that. Maybe they’ll go into Ridley’s race someday… who knows, maybe Prime 4 will do something similar to Prime 3’s introducing the pirate homeworld.
i love how ridley wanted to kill samus, got trashed by rodney aran , ate the parents and some survivors and got trashed multiple times by the girl some years later until she killed him and also grey voice was stronger than ridley he couldn't defeat him only because of his mental barrier
You know, as someone who's been a fan of the series for a long time and played pretty much every game I could get my greedy claws on, I have an unpopular opinion. Despite the rather stupidly shoehorned PTSD bits, Other M was a pretty fun game, and I liked playing it quite a bit.
As a game on itself Other M is a good game: Responsive controls, Continuation of events and Amazing battles. The problems with it are the gameplay that don't fit with what a Metroid game is, how it fits in the lore and how it breaks canon all the time. Other M is a good game it just isn't a Metroid game.
i actually agree having finally actually played it the only issues i had with it really were the PTSD parts especially with ridley, like if they had that in zero mission it would make sense since it was the first time she encountered him since her childhood but Other M takes place way later.
@@kintsuki99 Other M is strange because of how disappointing it is. Not because it's a genuinely bad game, but because it never actually manages to reach its potential. The entire time I play it, I just keep thinking to myself, "Man, what if we could use the nunchuk? What if the English localization was better? What if Sense Move didn't just break combat? What if Missiles were less clunky to use?" It had glimpses of a great Metroid game underneath, but it had so many self imposed restrictions that it couldn't meet the criteria effectively. And what's sad is I don't think we'll ever get another 3D Metroid in the same style as Other M because of how poorly it was received. That style of Metroid genuinely deserves a chance, but the game is mired with so many problems both in writing and gameplay that hinder it at every turn.

A big thing you missed with Zero Mission is that she doesn't get the gravity suit from this test. What she gets is actually a an Older yet "Legendary" version of the power Varia armor suit. When she firsts picks up the upgrades for space jump, gravity suit, and plasma beam, her Suit isn't compatible with them because they are older technologies. Once she gets the Legendary power suit from the trail those older technologies are useable because they are compatible with this older, yet more intigratible and stronger version of her suit armor.

Samus had left Ridley for dead up to 3-5 times by Other M The only feelings she should have for him at that point is either unbridled rage or to be inured. Not a paralyzing panic attack.
Also what contradiction? The Pirate Homeworld (also known as Urtraghus by the Pirates and Planet SN-883 by the Galactic Federation) seen in Metroid Prime 3 was stated to be one of many Pirate Homeworlds. They are a group of many alien species.
@@notgonnapay And yet, in Dread, she just stares down Kraid, then blasts him in the mouth without a second thought.
@@Teknanam Super Metroid is the ONLY time Ridley, the asshole that ate all 3 of her humanoid parents and caused the destruction of both of her homes, the first home and first 2 parents being in front of her when she was THREE YEARS OLD, actually died. She KNEW he got away and survived all of the other encounters. On top of that every single time before, AND AFTER Other M in the timeline she had warning that Ridley would probably be showing up so she could mentally prepare herself.
Other M is the ONLY time in the games that she goes into a full on PTSD panic attack because it's the only time in the games she couldn't prepare herself for the encounter.
She can't become part X thanks to her Metroid DNA. In Dread, she just gets more Thoha genes.
110%
@@Teknanam though if you think about it, her tendency to absorb abilities from them arguably means at least some part of the X-Core might still live on, though that’s honestly more just a personal theory than anything.
@@Teknanam Well, she absorbs abilities from them using her Metroid DNA, and we don't know exactly how that works. Either way, parts of her abilityset are derived from X Parasites
Tallon IV wasn't exploded. Aether still exists because Dark Aether exploded. Phaaze was the only planet that exploded in Prime 3. I don't think that her actions were responsible for Zebes exploding, but rather a failsafe to make sure that she didn't make it out of Tourian alive. And I don't think that the Alimbic Cluster Oubliette can be considered a planet.
Thanks for being the only person in the whole world to have read my reddit thread about the inconsistencies in the Metroid manga lol
oh boi can't wait for adam to show up and tell grim how to proceed with the video.
Samus doesn't need plot armor..
She has BIRD MAGIC
Samus keeps needing the help of animals to escape from exploding bases in her ship. She should maybe install some voice controlled autopilot on that thing one of these days
She's been stuck with the one BSL provided her for both of those without having the opportunity to replace her hyper-customized ship from Metroid Prime 1 through the opening of Fusion.
Or keep the Command Visor from Prime 3 lmao
Other M is a weird quandary for me since I like the ideas behind the story. It’s just the execution of those ideas was sadly not done well in a convincing manner.
Was done a little better in the original Japanese script and version
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged unfortunately that’s not saying much.
Samus Freaking out over 3 time dead riddly is still so Baffling. Other M should have been a Prequel to 1 and that probably would have helped a lot with the Narrative.

Oh that would make it So much better.
Literally just make her a Federation Marine this she has to listen to and Obey orders. It allows Adam to be a bit dickish in a Commander sort of Way. And by making it Samus first or Second encounter with Ridley you get a good PTSD scene that makes scenes. You can also remove the Adam Shooting Samus scene because that was stupid.
probably rework the Bottleship into a Space Pirate ship so you can Allude to the fact Space Pirates are experimenting with MB and can help explain how they remade it in Super Metroid.
@@devildolphin2102 Actually, the whole Adam being a dick and giving orders like making her go to the lava area without activating the Varia suit wasn't even a thing in the original Japanese Script for example.
To explain that example, she goes there bc of being stubborn after being told to only go to areas that her active abilities would allow her to and she needed to be told by Adam to finally activate it bc she was too stubborn to do it before that.
There's a pretty good video about the topic called "The Other M that never was".
It explains the issues the localization introduced to the story that while it had it's flaws, wasn't as bad as what we got.
Here's a link to it too: ua-cam.com/video/KTuMfsWwd0E/v-deo.html
The conclusion to this video hits so much harder after playing Dread, considering what happens there.

Never seen this guy before, but I really enjoy his excited moments
28:51 Pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere in Other M that the baby Metroid would have become another Queen had it lived. Which is honestly a nice precedent to what Samus almost became in Dread had Quiet Robe X not intervened.
You could have included the Prime games. They are canon, as Samus Returns AND Sakamoto himself both confirm. They take place between Metroid Zero Mission (Metroid 1) and Metroid Samus Returns (Metroid 2)
Oh, I always believed the Prime series to be canon, but I wanted this video to focus on the storyline with the Metroids and X. The Prime trilogy has pretty much nothing to do with the 2d games, aside from a few references and characters.

You completely missed the part of the story where she's married to my self-insert character in my fanfic. C'MON MAN.
You will have to fight Yandere Dev for that
Nice video. A few notes:
- The Federation officials behind the BSL station and all that in Fusion was only a certain faction in the Federation. She still works with the Federation afterwards, she is just wary that they may not all be as benevolent as they seem
- Samus' breakdown with Ridley in Other M was more about her character arc in that game. She felt helpless the entire game, and Ridley "coming back to life" was the last straw before she had a freakout. It wasn't 100% PTSD
Otherwise, great summary!
Looks like someone other than me did a little research.
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged or we all watched that one video, wonder how they would handle this mistranslation if that faction comes back for Metroid 6

I really love the final joke about Anthony appearing because, even if it most probably wasn't intended, Anthony is one of those few people who did the right thing when it was needed to save Samus. So it's actually more than just a joke if you think about it.
thank you so much for giving our Lady the love she deserves. I teared up at that final music box cut of the main theme. 10/10
So did I, and ty for sharing that
Samus would get really giddy at the sight of a brand new rideable lawn mower.
Dude, you're hilarious and fairly family friendly which I appreciate! Loved the video and all the great connections of Samus' character throughout the series. Thank you for making this! :)
This was a phenomenal video. I love how you formatted this like a story instead of just reviewing the games.
28:45 Small note, since the Queen Metroid in Other M is a clone of The Baby, it stands to reason that it would have evolved into a Queen rather than an Omega Metroid.
Would love to see how you incorporate Dread into this video
....This scares me. Will she eventually become the bad guy? The Galactic Federation already sees her as a threat.
That lullaby was a nice touch. This was my first video from you. You earned my sub sir, thanks for all your hard work!

I also love what they did with Samus in Metroid Dread, she really gives off Doomslayer vibes. But yeah, great video, every Metroid fan should see this
I love Samus. The Metroid series has been my favorite for a very long time. I honestly got into because of Prime. But I was actually old enough to appreciate the game at that time. When Super Metroid came out I just ran around shooting and jumping lol. I did replay all the games I could once I was able to start buying them. I wanna buy a Switch now just to try out Dread.

Me: "Oh, so I can watch the video, wouldn't wanna be spoiled for the game!"
Grim: "So, here's tons of important cutscenes and spoilers for Other M. You're welcome! =)"
Apparently, due to a grave translation error that was left unchecked, the Federation wasn't the one responsible for what happens in Fusion and Other M. In fact, the Federation as a whole agrees with Samus' decision, while the orders to step back and let the X live was a result of an old, discontinued military faction within the Federation.
They should make a show out of this. I'd watch the hell out of that.
This video is pretty damn good
I knew Samus since playing Smash on the N64 but not once played one of her games or knew anything about her backstory

Also, Dread adds the neat factor that she had TWO donors for Chozo DNA: Gray Voice from the Thoha Tribe and Raven Beak; the villain of Dread, from the Mawkin Tribe.

Nah that is a retcon made in Dread.
Dread, and fusion for that matter, retcon a lot of what was said originally in previous games.

Ehhhhh.
A lot of the “LORE” came from Old Sakomoto concepts and an Old Manga.
Dread was written by Sakomoto. For better or For worse.
The man gave us the Travesty that was Other M.
But personally having an expanse on Chozo Culture giving them a Language Samus Speaks and making them into this Ancient Race slowly dying off is a cool dynamic.
We can only see if dreads Retcons will be positive or negative on the series.
I think super Metroid REALLY DESERVES a remake

I think the Metroid DNA that comes up in Fusion was actually collected during Other M… I seem to recall it being a plot point that the Federation’s decontamination procedure allowed them to harvest cells from her power suit from when the baby Metroid was killed directly above her. That’s presumably how they were also able to clone Ridley, though I’ve never been clear on why they did that. Maybe they’ll go into Ridley’s race someday… who knows, maybe Prime 4 will do something similar to Prime 3’s introducing the pirate homeworld.

Hoo boy. Did Dread add more depth to her. I kind of want a follow up to this now.
@@kintsuki99 Pretty much exactly what I was thinking, but you said it better. Thank you.
I find the game to be quite fun too. And the Japanese writing seriously lacks the BS the English one is rife with
i actually agree having finally actually played it the only issues i had with it really were the PTSD parts especially with ridley, like if they had that in zero mission it would make sense since it was the first time she encountered him since her childhood but Other M takes place way later.
